I was sitting around the other day, thinking about pairing gold kitchen cabinet hardware with stainless steel appliances, and I suddenly remembered: I never showed you all any photos of the finished World's Ugliest Condo bathroom!
I have a couple of reasons for this: a) I never finished it; b) I haven't taken any photos. So there's that. A bunch of stuff still needs hanging, and I constantly shift things around, so I'm not sure it will ever truly be done. But in honor of February, and since we are showing you all these renovation projects and before & afters, I thought to myself "why not give them a little glimpse of a bathroom at least?"
These photos were taken with an iPhone, but you can still see the what's what. Enjoy.

Howard Butcher Bloc...
genius, I will save this in my inspiration folder.
World's ugliest? ::scoffs:: I have seen far worse than that.
That said, that 'after' photo is lovely.
Looks fantastic! But I have to say, I've had WAAAAY uglier bathrooms than the Before. Not even close. Wish I did some befores and afters of them. I even have one at the moment (yellow cracking wallpaper, peeling floral linoleum, sink barely big enough for hands, built in storage in weird hard-to-reach spots [like behind the toilet] and so on) but it's about 2 years and $15k away from appearing on this site...
Did you buy a new mirror or just frame out the existing one?
It's very lovely. I like how you've punched it up without having to expand or move things around.
Agree..not the world ugliest but the after is very nice; almost spa like.
Far from the ugliest; mine is like your "before", but worse: with textured wall, a medicine cabinet, and peeling linoleum. And I rent, so I'm stuck with it for a while.
The "after" is simple and effective. Good job!
Where did you get those shelves? My bathroom needs a couple just like that.
I have a question: Was there actually a time when someone considered those ubiquitous wood/yellow formica/unframed mirror bathrooms to be attractive? I remember having one in the 80s or 90s and thinking it was ugly even then. Who started this terrible trend?
I would take your before bathroom anytime instead of mine lol ! It dates from the 80's, has holes in my wall because the roof is leaking, it's missing tiles, etc...
The after is pretty nice !
How did you change the lighting so drastically?
Hahaha @Slangevar ! a very good question. I think the idea was that they were "plain" and people could jazz them up with some fancy towels and soaps. Back in the old days, builders didn't have a lot of options and "design" was only for rich folks.
My current bathroom is worse than the "before". Lots worse. Scarily worse. Love the after, especially the shower curtain.
@Sammystyle - the lighting in the first picture looks like those awful yellowy bulbs in a row above the mirror (that so many renter bathrooms have) but they are gone in the second pic so I'm assuming a new ceiling fixture/brighter bulbs?
Add me to the list of those who have seen (and lived with) much, much uglier bathrooms than the one in the "before" short.
Nice job, though. No big-money remo here, by the looks of it, just a nice redo within the existing envelope.
@cchristina13 those look like Ikea EKBY BJÄRNUM brackets with some nicer, stained boards cut to fit in lieu of the standard Ikea veneer particle board: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S89870335/#/S89870335
My question is - was the mirror glued onto the wall and if so, how did you remove it? We've got a new vanity ready to go in while we're contemplating our plan of attack to get that sucker out of there!
This is lovely! Nice upgrades. I love that stone that you used for the sink!
@Parnassus - Well, it's quite a legacy for whoever designed the first one of them. I must've visited 100 bathrooms just like this in my life. AT should do a profile on the original crappy bathroom "designer."
Love those shelves ... but not to nitpick, they look like they're not parallel. Is it just the perspective, or is one slightly askew?
Love them though!
I think the title references the author's series on remodeling her condo, not the bathroom alone. It should perhaps be something like "World's Ugliest Condo: Bathroom Edition." However, I'm sure the comments saying it's not the world's ugliest would still be valid.
Maybe you could change the title to something nobody could disagree with so we don't keep having to read again and again and again and again, every time you post in this series, that this is not the world's ugliest condo.
however, my money's on somebody still nit-picking your choice of titles.
What's the lighting please? Our bathroom is about the same size and it's hard to light nicely. My husband doesn't like a lightbulb shining right at his eye level for some reason.
Much nicer! Can you tell me about the countertop on the vanity? Is it marble or some marble look-a-like solid surface?
Is that shower curtain from West Elm? I'm looking for something in a bold stripe.
That counter top is AWESOME- What it be? :)
Ugly it is not, but the bore is BORING, like mine! The after is fantastic: clean, bright, with contrasts too. Crisp would be the word.
Slangevar, the person who invented the mess you mentioned is the same cruel hearted person who invented popcorn ceilings
@Mike_in_Hawaii - HA! I'm sure you're right. What else can we blame on him? Perhaps he's still alive and designing granite countertops?
I don't know about World's Ugliest Condo Bathroom but it could be the World's Ugliest Shower Curtain (in the before). That alone makes me shudder.
After looks great - bathroom & shower curtain. Nice job!
Much better, though with that much need for storage, I'd have gone for a medicine cabinet instead of a mirror.
I imagine that getting ready for work in the morning is so much nicer in the after bathroom...so light and cheerful!
Subtly punchy. Very nice.
WOW! Sharp and clean. But I wouldn't call the "before" the world's ugliest condo bathroom. I'd call it the world's most ubiquitous condo bathroom.
I'm going to nitpick on something that seems rather commonsense. This is a renovation series written for AT. Why isn't there a material list in the article? Currently people have to ask questions about the manufacturers and where an item was purchased, only to then wait for a response in a comment system that does not notify you when there is a response.
Isn't it the same bathroom from The World's Ugliest Condo series that got renovated in this post: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/the-worlds-ugliest-condo-bathroom-reveal-renovation-before-after-171967 ? If yes, how come you went to all the trouble (and expence) and ripped the newly installed marble tiles just to replace them with the white subway tiles? And all this after such a short period, a mere half a year? Because it seems to me that the marble tiles were not in the original bathroom. Or did you just repaint them? I think I like this latest version the best.
I love the shelves!
@mribaro - good question! there are actually two almost identical bathrooms in the condo. the marble one is the "master" and is a bit bigger, which you can't see in the photo. this is the smaller of the two.
My old bathroom was much uglier than your old one. Your old one i would have cherished compared to mine. But still, rather ugly, and I love the new update!!
I wish the Before photo was color correct. I'm curious what horrid dingy color the original fixtures were.
@milo.delara - Hear! Hear! I am still wanting to know what that countertop material is. Materials and source lists should be a given, IMO.
My first thought was, "Wait a minute. Does this person live in MY building?" Every sink, tub and toilet was yellow, every cabinet was the same laminate (or plastic?) brown. Built in 1976. So gross. One by one, we are all ridding ourselves of the ugliness.
I wondered what happened to the world's ugliest condo. I enjoyed following along and then it all just stopped. Glad to see some follow up.
I just looked up all your entries on the ugliest condo, but I didn't see any of the final after.
What does the condo look like now--all the rooms and furniture? Or did I miss the reveal somehow.
I commend you for all the work you did. And thanks for the heads up on the Ikea cabinet situation.
Also I am glad you survived the 'fan attack'--sounds like something that would happen to me! ;>)
The bathroom is a huge improvement--much lighter and welcoming. You've nicely brought it into the 21st century. Congrats.
My parents 'cabana' bathroom looks exactly like this! Same exact layout- similar colors. There is a door (located directly facing the sink) that leads out to the patio. It has the marine/nautical feel to it. Love it!
