This makeover is pretty unbelievable. While the project was no small feat (hello new window!), the resulting space is still simple in its design and beauty, making the most of the new natural light and a calming wall color.

From Naomi: When we bought our home, this “master bedroom” was a small beige room with warped luan-board walls and tiny windows. In our renovation, we added a new bay window and re-did the walls in plaster.

Our wall color (Iced Slate by Benjamin Moore) is perfect for a bedroom – calm and adaptive. It changes in different lights, sometimes looking gray, sometimes blue, and sometimes with a purple undertone. I warmed it up with a rug I found on craigslist for $150 with sweet pinks and yellows and an ornate style. I went with clean white bedding from West Elm so it wouldn’t get too busy.

A lot of DIY went into this room! I couldn’t find bedside tables with the right style and shape, so I adapted a pair of flat-packed ones from Home Depot with new legs and color. I also built a custom storage bench for the foot of the bed, because the space was too narrow for most that I could find to buy. I also made personalized art using a snapshot of me and my boyfriend.

The light fixture is a bold statement. I found it at a flea market and had it rewired, and I think it stops the room from being too traditional. Another statement piece is the dresser. This is my boyfriend’s, which he found at an antique shop in New Mexico and had transported all the way to Massachusetts.

I’m crazy about this room. Most of my house is bolder and filled with primary colors, so it is nice to have a softer space to retreat to for bed. It is also lovely to wake up here, because the light streams in and the room feels very bright and happy.
