In an entryway, the space underneath a bench is a natural storage spot. You can keep things extra organized with baskets (Image 4) or use the bench's own rungs as a shelf (Image 8). A good ol' storage locker gains even more functionality with a hanging organizer (Image 1), and clever DIY projects create storage personalized to your needs, taste, and budget (Images 5 and 7).
Cubbies, shelves, and hanging organizers make for efficient organizational tools in closets. Getting creative, you can also re-purpose something such as theater seats to hold and display your footwear (Image 13). In that case, or if you've got a particularly colorful or unusual collection, the shoes can even contribute to the decor (Images 3 and 11).

Shaw's Original Fir...
I always love me a good orange metal locker. This is the best use of this type of storage I've seen. Shoes are nasty business to store, keep organized but particularly, looking good? Only when in a super organized state as this, behind closed but accessible doors. Nice.
I had the back-door hanging storage from #4 for something like 5 years. It hung on the door for two apartments, and lined the bottom of my closet before being completely destroyed by use. I'll be getting another one for my new place!
I'm in love with #6 - the heels-over-molding thing is pretty spectacular!
The one thing I'd like to see more provisions for is BOOTS. I live in St. Paul, so having multiple pairs of winter boots is necessary, but it's difficult to find storage for them that isn't next to the door. I have some ideas for my new place, so we'll see where that goes!
@bodicegoddess, you know I found that at BBB. ;) I destroyed mine too.
As far as these solutions: I agree with @bodicegoddess (and that shoe rack would 100% fit in your new closet) that there needs to be more ways to store boots. I can't fold all of them for my shoe rack! So far, I've been using cubby storage and rugs for my boots - or just tucking them under my entry bench.
I love and awesome closet, but then again I think every one in the world does. love the photo with the yellow chair. so cute :)
Great ideas; my shoe storage area is looking a little cluttered, so this timing is perfect.
I love #5 with it's very minimal design.
I contend that footwear strewn across the floor is a method of shoe storage.
Not a GOOD one, but a method nonetheless.
I love number 6, but there's no way in hell I'm going to clean my soles every day before hanging them on a white wall.
I've been storing my boots in 2 ways:
1. using a skirt hanger -or-
2. stuffing them with rolled up magazines and sticking them in the top of my closet (thank you Real Simple)
They'll come down now that its winter.
Also, thanks for this. I no longer feel guilty about the number of pairs of shoes I own. :)
We have a small entryway and the shoes and coats are out in the open. Having only three pairs of shoes per person works wonders. Summer sandals and dress shoes can be stored elsewhere.
My door opens directly to a staircase so my entry is a narrow hallway at the top that I fitted with some discontinued Ikea wall mounted shoe racks to show off our sneaker collection. It's the only shoe storage option I've actually liked. Anything that organizes and is decorative is a plus for a family of four in less than 500 sq feet.
Wow! I just love the idea with the painted wood boxes on wall just too cute! This gives me more ideas for our apartment and also kids room! Well done!
love that blue hat/coat rack. Note to self: colour changes EVERYTHING
Any storage solutions for a house that doesn't have closets but has a dog the likes to grab the shoes and move them around? The locker's the right idea but wouldn't go with my Victorian home at all.
I also need more storage solutions for boots. Like bodicegoddess I'm in MN (across the river in Minneapolis) and I practically live in boots. I have 8 or 9 pairs in rotation right now and it's not even winter yet.
oh to have an orange storage locker stuffed full of shoes- fabulous!
Shoe organization is a big issue in our house. My husband has way more shoes than I do and he likes to have most of them by the front door. I'm thinking of getting one of these customized pine shoe racks on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/64073747/shoe-rack-and-table?ref=pr_shop
This Etsy shoe storage bench is FAB. Looks very well-made. Of course, it's also a bit expensive: http://www.etsy.com/listing/71621121/japanese-tansu-style-shoe-storage-bench?ref=v1_other_1
Here's a shoe rack with adjustable shelves to remove wasted space: Flexi Shoe Rack. Also fits boots!
