tour2009.jpgOur memory of Brad & Kendra's Small Cool entry earlier this year was summed up in one word: WOW. Rarely does such a small space pack such a punch. Soaring ceilings, acres of custom-painted moldings, patterns and textures galore, delightfully aged wood floors, and layered lighting design create an epic impression upon entering. The open plan living / dining / kitchen is vibrant and social, while the back bedroom suite beckons like a warm, lush oasis. They've struck that illusive balance between high drama and accessible luxury...and its for sale...

06-30_2.jpg

Brad is a stylist with his own fine interior painting and wallpapering business, Color Theory, and their home feels like a living laboratory. We totally admire their holistic approach to painting this apartment — it is not two separate rooms but one cohesive dwelling. Beyond just paint, plant life plays a huge role in this space. The 10' bow front windows are filled with lush views of the front yard and a complementary indoor garden draws life and greenery all the way back to the bedroom. In a floor-through one-bedroom this kind of continuity really makes the space feel so much larger.

Clearly you all agreed they were doing something right because they walked away Little Division Winners in this year's Small Cool Contest and invested their $2000 award from Room & Board in another high drama piece: a black marble Saarinen dining table. These high impact, glamorous pieces, layered with a variety of affordable textures and patterns create a delightful sense of play between luxury and eclectic, everyday comfort. Our favorite might be the bed — that houndstooth blanket is so right in so many ways...

Apartment Therapy Survey
Our style: We are 100% the definition of a high-low mix and our style is a constant work in progress. Over the course of our 10 years together our home has come together in a very organic way. If we had to pin it down, it would be clean and contemporary lines, mostly neutral colors punctuated with bright and metallic pops, and a definite juxtaposition between objects that are both glamorous and raw.
Inspiration: With regard to admiring their style, Kelly Wearstler, Barbara Bestor, Terrence Conran,& Florence Broadhurst come immediately to mind. Most of all though, what is most inspiring is seeing real people's homes both in magazines and on design blogs. When there is a definite informality, sense of humor, and authenticity that people have about their homes, that is what we really respond to on top of just the obvious physical beauty.
Favorite Element: The contradictions of the old and new elements in the unit are really what attracted us in the first place. Living in such an old city, it was important for us to have a home which reflects that and contains a bit of that history within its bones. All of the original elements, the floor, moldings and entry-way, fireplace and high ceilings are what initially drew us in and provide a constant source of inspiration with regard to how they enhance all of the THINGS that we've collected over the years.
Biggest Challenge: Without a doubt, budget has always been our biggest challenge. We've been lucky that we have been able to utilize our workplaces to furnish our home. Beyond just an employee discount, we never pay retail for anything. If we see a great knick-knack, or book, or decorative piece that we have to have and it's on-sale, we will without a doubt bring it home.
What Friends Say: We're lucky enough to have friends that are a constant source of inspiration to us as well but I think that friends really see our personality come through in our home. One of the biggest points of interest are the cuckoo clocks, purchased for .99 a piece.
Biggest Embarrassment: Well, we are not terribly proud of the fact that all of our furniture matches. That was more a matter of circumstance than choice — all pieces were purchased from BoConcept where Brad worked, for a considerable discount. We definitely feel that our living room could benefit from a few more found pieces and are looking forward to reupholstering our sofa and chair in more adventurous textiles.
Proudest DIY: We feel that the paint and wallpaper have really provided the biggest transformation for us and have enhanced the drama of the space considerably.
Biggest Indulgence: Our biggest indulgence is that we never say no to something that we really love if it's a great deal. We exercise very little restraint and thereby have amassed a huge amount of decorative objects which are in constant rotation.
Best advice: Embrace the architectural details of your homes' interior, rather then blend them with the decor. By highlighting Window Trim, Crown Moldings, and even "quirks", this will create instant charm for your home.
Dream source: (online) Velocity Art and Design and 1st Dibs. (in person) ABC Carpet & Home. But we also dream about a vintage buying spree / honeymoon in Palm Springs.

I just saved at least half of these pictures for my inspiration file, it is just so beautiful! The contrasting black white and gray are so soothing and the "knick-knack" arrangement is so professional. A truly inspirational home, thanks for sharing!!

The wallpaper around the fireplace is Osborne & Little "Mandara" in the "gilver" colorway. I should know- I have this on my wall! It's wonderful stuff.

Your welcome.

I like many individual things about this place very much, but the overall effect - overpowering, overworked, intimidating.

LOVE the living room...some of those pictures ended up in my inspiration file, too! I realize they said they were embarrassed about the matching furniture, but I think its the most successful part of the whole space. And the new table is amazing...although I'm not convinced anybody eats over there.

The bedroom is on its way to catching up with the living room, is just really cluttered.

I am so glad that I get see more pictures of this home. I so want to paint my apartment in dark colors now. I have a question: How is the pendant lamp affixed over the dining room table? I think I would like to do a similar set up over mine because I have popcorn ceilings I can't get rid of in my rented apartment.

FABULOUS!

Still one of my favorites I've seen on AT.

The photos cleared up one of my concerns from their Small Cool entry. The straight sofa in front of the bow window seemed like an odd use of space. From the angles in these photos, I can see that there isn't as much wasted space as I thought.

And the Saarinen table is a great addition.

Hi Brad and Kendra, I have left a message in your small cool entry, but I am not sure if you saw it.
Anyway, this is Jing, your old neighbor in apartment 6 (3rd floor). We've been living in NYC since we moved, but we are still loyal Red Sox fans. =)

I recall that you guys had dark grey walls in your small cool entry, so you painted them lighter now?

Job well done. How are the cats doing?

Some really elegant architectural details in this. I like the use of some formal elements not frequently seen these days -- like the porcelain coffee pot set on the cocktail table.

I LIKE the deer head. Just as I was thinking "enough with the taxidermy!" (from the first pic that shows part of the antlers) the next photo shows that it's a sculpture! Very cool.

This apartment does have a lot of personality. It's probably one of those places that if you were friends with the owner-the decor screams their name and is so their personality. I like it. I also like how the black was used on the moldings. It really makes it stand out!

I don't typically comment in blogs, but this could possibly be about 99.99% my fav House Tour EVER!- short of 100 only due to the deer head-just a personal preference :)

This space embodies all aspects of my favorite designs: a little historic, whimsical, eclectic, contemparary chic AND practical.
I especially love the "asian corner" - makes me think of the happy place I escape to in my dreams :) (I also happen to own an exact hand carved replica of the Thai goddess).

Furthermore, you shouldn't be ashamed of the "matching" living room furniture. I believe it is what ties the whole space together. Without it, it would seem as if you were "trying too hard" to achieve the "eclectic" look, instead of just a natural occurence resulting from great taste and attention to detail, with just the right amount of appreciation for unique accents.

I also love the idea of using the hanging plant bracket for the pendant lamp--great DIY idea for us non-home owners! Thanks for the post and the amazing pictures to keep us all inspired!

Can we say obsessed? I am still on this post!

But anyway, in response to: jennybasel

I'm not sure if that particular cart was from Ikea, but I own the same (in different dimensions) and were purchased at Target. They also carry (or have) the same in a black frame with the same table top as the silver. Hope this helps!

So though I doubt Brad and Kendra will ever read this, I really am interested in this home and wanted to comment in depth.
I LOVE that black and grey are actually used as colors and not just negatives or neutrals. I love the graphics on the duvet and the pairing of grey and yellow (really there are few things that are better, for my money).

I only find one conceptual problem. I think that because the design has relied so heavily on grey and black, a lot of license has been taken with busy-ness. Though I appreciate the visual saturation and creativity on one level, I think that less black trim (epecially on the doors), fewer trendy items like the stag head and chromed clock collection and fewer high-contrast patterns would really focus the eye and add some serenity without sacrificing a bit of the drama.

Nevertheless, well, and interestingly done.
