Rachel, an artist and assistant curator at RISD’s Nature Lab and Al, a graphic designer, have created a calm, harmonious space that manages to be sophisticated even as it unselfconsciously celebrates the sometimes-chaos that is family life. Their collections of specimens from the outdoors are both beautiful and fascinating, and their sense of humor is easily apparent from the maimed toys on display in shadowboxes along the stairwell — victims of the family dog — to a favorite pair of boots turned planters in the garden. Dried leaves artfully arranged above the bed and a light-filled attic art studio reveal a lovely rustic sensibility, while the bright children’s rooms are playful and graphic. The house is designed to be livable, charming, and best of all, expresses the unique personality of its inhabitants.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Eclectic

Inspiration: Nature, humor, irony

Favorite Element: With a fire going, the den (AKA the “cozy room”) is the best room in the house during the winter

Biggest Challenge: Staying ahead of the ever-encroaching force of entropy!!

Proudest DIY: Al made an awesome wine “TOTEM” made out of old, wooden drawers discarded by a jewelry findings business near his old studio.
