American folk art used to have a bad rap, labeled primitive or naive compared to other fine art. Traditional woven rugs, carvings, and quilts - once valued in families and small communities for their utility - are now recognized by the larger world as a legitimate bottom up approach to beautiful design. Created by self-taught artists, they have their own patterns and expressed traditions, unique to region and individual maker. Think Navajo rugs, or the vibrant quilts of Gees Bend, and you know what I mean.

If "haberdashing" isn't a word, it should be. And Ron Marvin would own it. He's made a mark in the design world with menswear-inspired interiors that come together like a polished GQ how-to: Start with the well-tailored groundwork (charcoal suit, sofa or wall paint), add a splash of color (tie or pocket square or lamp), give it a little bling (cufflink or nailhead trim) and make sure the details are right, polished and impeccable. It's signature Ron Marvin, and dandy never seemed so fine. Even on a bit of a budget.
In my ideal living room, there exists a harmonious balance of organic and artificial, neutral warm tones and deep blacks and new shapes with classic staples. Of all the things I love though, one of my favorites is what you can't see: a soft woodsy fragrance to sooth the senses.

When I found out we were having a baby girl I didn't really know where to start as I had been in full blown boy mode for over 5 years. So I started gathering ideas and photos of just girly things I liked. More
Piper's bedroom is stunning. I love the over the top plush palette of girly fun. With the help of her mom Traci (of Nursery Works) and Tamara Honey (of House of Honey), Piper has a room that she can welcome and grow into. It's sophisticated enough for a teenager though she's still got a few years to be a kid and enjoy its lighthearted approach. More
Curved scroll lines, navy and white stripes, perchance a Jenny Lind crib to dream in— this is time-honored decor brought up to date. If you bristle at the very thought of beige, these may not be for you. But if you are one to embrace a neutral color palette and don't want to redecorate when style tides turn, check out this roundup of "New Traditional" children's rooms from the Apartment Therapy archives. Last week at my father's big cottage, the painting on the third floor was finished, wall to wall carpeting in three rooms was torn up, and the floors were sanded and sealed back to their lovely 1897 glory. Then on Saturday morning, I drove over all of the STUFF that the new house needed for the renters that I'd ordered online (toilet paper, plates, silverware, towels, etc), and our whole family pitched in as my mother's entire storage locker of furniture was delivered to furnish the house quickly. The renters arrived at 3pm, and we were all done, but it was a long day! More
