Amy is a wiz at working from the ground up. In college, she started a black-and-white stapled fanzine that evolved into Venus Zine, an internationally distributed full-sized glossy that covers women in pop culture. Fearless and fun, Amy's decor reflects her DIY roots. Her one-bedroom condo in Humboldt Park is filled with fixed-up vintage finds, curated accessories, and a unique sense of style...

Amy's condo is full of smart, simple solutions. Using basic DIY skills, Amy painted and/or reupholstered several of her vintage modern pieces. The planters in the dining room are repurposed ice buckets that look sleek and keep moisture from condensing on surfaces. Many of the accessories that give her home its character are budget buys from Chinatown. Although the apartment is small, Amy used paint to differentiate rooms from one another and give each space its own identity: the dark blue entryway is a bold first note, the sky blue dining room is an airy space, and the white bedroom feels clean and calm.

Amy's Survey:
My Style: Modern Nostalgia
Inspiration: Apartment Therapy Home Tours of New York shoebox-size apartments
Favorite Element(s): Built-in bookshelves on either side of the fireplace and the windows lining the dining room.
Biggest Challenge: Storage. There's only one closet (one in the entranceway and a small linen cabinet in the bathroom). There is no closet in the bedroom.
What Friends Say: "Where's the rest of your stuff?" ... I had to downsize some of my furniture before moving in.

>> Enter Slideshow & Thumbnails
Biggest Embarrassment: I make quick decisions -- like, to station my flat-screen TV smack-dab in the middle of fireplace mantle in the living room. It's totally the focal point of the room, and it looks pretty unattractive -- but I already invested money into getting a cable line hooked up in this location. It's not an accident that you don't get to see this as part of this House Tour. I wish I'd given this more thought instead of just thinking, "Centering things is good feng shui." Not always.
Proudest DIY: The quick fixemups, such as recovering the dining room chairs with Ikea fabric and repainting my childhood dresser sky blue.
Biggest Indulgence: New stainless appliances in the kitchen. When I moved into the condo, the kitchen still had the old, fried-up appliances from the previous apartment renter. I moved in and painted the walls and cleaned things up.
Best Advice: Keep knick-knacks to a minimum. That, and whenever I'm feeling like my place is a little lackluster, I give it a good scrub and rearrange some of my, well, knickknacks. It gives the place a quick makeover. Oh, and white is nice, isn't it? It took me years to view white as a good decorating "color."

I love it. And what I like best is that she uses sources that almost everyone has access to but mixes them up in a really charming way.

Hey I love the (ceramic?) lidded container with what looks like black script on it... where is it from?

I think our apartments would be friends! I love your place and am so inspired to rearrange a bit now. I was noticing the little things like vases, pictures and "knick knacks" and I bet there is a story attached to every piece. It's so much fun and I admire your style! Thanks for sharing.

I like it because it so clearly reflects her true, personal taste. There are objects, colors, arrangements that I don't care for at all, but the whole is something I respect because it seems so true to the person who lives there. And it seems to me that is the real goal for a "home" as opposed to a "house."

good job! I love that little print above your sink and the coat hook you've got on the wall next to it. Nice furniture pieces mixed in. Your apartment looks pretty and cozy.

oh i love this tour. the dining room table and hutch are so fantastic... there is so much personality in this space, which makes it a home, not a model showroom. wonderful!

Kudos to the juxtaposition of the giraffe and the Mona Lisa...that feels brilliant to me! Amy's editing eye is key, keeping it simple and less cluttered and light.

I love the hutch in the dining room so much, I can hardly function. Please, can anyone tell me more about that type of piece? I must find something of the like.
And I love your home!

Beautiful! Absolutely love it and it's so nice to see a place that mere mortals without a ton of money can accomplish on their own. Would totally love to live in your place. Where did you find the red chinese cabinet? Really great use of color.

Great place, so warm and lively! I totally agree with you that cleaning and rearranging can bring new life to a home. I love the Ikea night tables in the bedroom. I can't find them on the Ikea site, did you buy them a long time ago?

Would also love to know the color of the blue in your dining room!

i'm having a hard time believing it's 500sqft but i guess without closets it certainly opens up a lot of space though you have to suddenly create storage for yourself.
very nicely done.

Well done with a contemporary look without being cold and sterile.

Thanks for all the comments! To answer questions: I bought the coffee table in the early 2000s in Vallejo, California, at a Goodwill for about $20, and I painted it gold (it used to be poopy brown). I inherited the dining room set from my grandparents -- they bought the pieces in British Columbia, but it's a pretty common 1970s Danish teak design. You can find similar pieces at vintage modern stores and on eBay if you do a search for "Danish modern" or "Danish teak." I recovered the chairs with Ikea fabric.
Oh! And, coincidentally, I am going to put my condo on the market this week -- if you are interested in details or attending the open house, please contact my realtor, Sarah Linn, at 773.454.5548.
Thanks!
Amy

I definately love the look, and the efficiency of it all. I think I'd probably round it out with some sconces instead of lamps, to complete the "clean" look.

Yes, the bluish paint brand and color please. My landlord is ok with me using this color in my living room but it's hard to hold a paint chip up to the computer. Printing it doesn't work either. I'm sure the shade will be off a bit from the website compared to the store but it's a start anyway.
Thank you
