Name: Andreas
Location: Greektown
Size: 1,000 sq. ft.
Years lived in: 8 months
Inspiration and style: I’m really inspired by simplicity; I get stressed out when my house is cluttered by things that I don’t care about. I am so much more focused when I only have things around me that are important and beautiful.
I’m inspired by the Danish Modern movement, specifically Grete Jalk, Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner. I really wanted my home to look different than any place I’d seen before. I wanted it completely different than the way it was when I moved in...and it is (see the "Before" photos). And I love good chairs!
Favorite room: The living room
Most talked about element: My Florence Knoll desk; everyone thinks it's the most beautiful piece ever.
Most embarrassing element: The bathroom; it’s not my style at all, and I’m going to change that soon. I also have an enormous printer that is pretty embarrassing, so I keep it in the closet.
Proudest DIY: Installing two steel storage doors from
Steel Building.
Dream source: Dansk Møbelkunst.
Reality source: Scouring the web, eBay, and just research, research, research to find what I’m looking for. I insist on searching and waiting for great deals. Some great furniture sites that I use: Retro Modern and Denmark 50.
Best advice: To not take too much advice! Buy only what you really want. If you can only afford one great thing per year, I think you’ll be happier in the long run. You should try to be proud of your house and that can only happen when you edit and love what you have, I think.
Found treasure: Hans Wegner nightstand that I “found” on eBay.
Had forever: An old farmer’s cabinet from the Kane County market.
Just got: My Florence Knoll bed and headboard from a store in Texas called Collage.
Sources for kitchen fixtures: I updated my kitchen with all IKEA all the way. I also went with IKEA kitchen cabinets for my living room storage, which brings me to more advice: try cheaper alternatives for something you have your heart set on.
(Thanks, Andreas!)
Andreas, I love love love the place. Keeping with the Danish modern feel without feeling overdone, to which I say well done! I love a white room with dark floors and your fabulous photos will hopefully convince my better half as well. I really enjoy the raised office, separate space without walls etc. I personally would need and island in the kithcen and maybe a different bed, but I think the place is gorgeous.
Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!
Stunning! Absolutely Stunning! This is very much the kind of look I would love to achieve in my place but with a bit more color.
beautiful. love it. i'm working toward a very similar look in my apt. i love white and i've been using glass blocks, too.
one question for you -- my next purchase is that same piet hein table. what size is the one you have? i'm wondering if you can fit 6 chairs around the smaller size?
thanks again. BEAUTIFUL.
Good God I love this.
I, too, love it! Fresh and clean but not stark or sterile. Great job on the reno, and props to the IKEA pride -- the kitchen fits really well with the space.
I really dig this place and I think the after is far better than the before. I love the furnishings, the choice to go clean, and the details. I particularly like that the office area is elevated; seperated but not removed; wise choice...
That being said I hate to say it but:
"I really wanted my home to look different than any place IÂ’d seen before."
It kind of looks like a DWR showroom...
Gorgeous.
I have found my inspiration!!!
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! Your choices on pieces that speak to you are wonderful.
I LOVE IT!!
Your place is beautifully done. Love the Knoll pieces and I love the way you combined the Ikea cabinets in the living room.
Good call on the Francis Francis, too!
I have to agree, that Knoll desk may very well be the most beautiful piece ever. What a gorgeous place to live.
Love it!
i LOVE that colorful coat hanger.
and the overall feel is very contemporary and sleek. i agree about the white room, dark floors. great choice.
though the place is a bit too cold for me its still impressive.
I love it too! What make/finish Ikea cabinets are those in the living room? And (sorry if this is a stupid question) are they wall cabinets?
i love that desk and the rocking chair...
but i have to agreet that it looks too much
like a showroom.
i'd put some art on the walls and add some
flash of color somewhere!
I'm sorry, but I can't stop looking at these pics..........
andreas you have a fantastic londo. i especially like the multi-colored coat rack and the kitchen table. really good work on the rehab. and since we're commenting, i think your place has alot more eclectic style than a DWR showroom!
Andreas, It's gorgeous! I love how you did the Ikea cabinets as storage/console. Which cabinets did you use? I was looking at Akurum wall-hanging on the Ikea site, but yours look more pleasing and square.
Andreas your place is beautiful. Have you heard of London based designer, Kelly Hoppen? I'm a huge fan of her design aesthetic. Like you, she also prefers a clean modern design, and she infuses her space with organic materials, textures... just great. I think you'd really dig her.
Here's her website: www.kellyhoppen.com
Here's her book, Kelly Hoppen Style : The Golden Rules of Design. I have this in my own design library and look to it often for inspiration when I'm designing loft spaces for clients:

Hey Everyone,
Thank for all the kind words about my place I'm glad that most of you like it as much as I do.
So to the questions, My Super Elliptical table by Piet Hein and Bruno Mathsson is the 59 by 39.5 size. You will be able to fit six ant chairs or six similar small chairs around it but if you have anything bigger than those chairs it will not fit. You can find the table at: http://www.retromodern.com or Luminaire it will take a longer time to get it from Luminaire plus you will have to pay tax on it.
The IKEA wall cabinets are the AKURUM size 30x12 with small pearl white color doors.
Thanks Again,
Andreas Larsson
thanks for the info on your place andreas....love the ikea white cabinets as a sideboard. did you have to do anything to reinforce the wall so that the wall mount cabinets are stable and do not rip out of the wall. also is your floor painted black or stained ebony?
Thank you, Andreas, for answering my question about the Piet Hein table. It helps. My chairs are the Cherner side chairs, so it sounds like they will fit that size table.
Your place is dreamy -- and I love how you combine Knoll and IKEA. The whole place flows.
Hello again,
Lets see, No reinforcement in the wall necessary for the wall cabinets but I would not sit on it or anything.
The floor is painted with glossy black porch paint DO NOT prime before.
-Barbara, no problem good luck with your table it will look great with the Cherner Chairs if you have the room I would get the medium table the small one is pretty tight when you have six people sitting at it.
This is the most stunning place i have ever seen in my life...i LOVE that its so stark and looks like a showroom. I dream of living in something like this someday.
I spent all day yesterday painting my apartment and was kind of proud of it...but after seeing this my place looks like an immature kids house....
Thank you for inspiring me and hopefully in a few years when i can afford to buy and start settling into something, i can begin to try and create something 1/10 as spectacular as what you have...
PS: out of curiousity, what do you do for a living and how old are you? (sorry, if that is too personal! and feel free to answer it over email instead if you choose...)
Hej Andreas!

Wow. This is where I'd want to live. It's modern and fresh and totally livable. LOVE it. I'm glad you included the before pictures - very gutsy to realize your vision so wonderfully
Love the place Andreas and it does not look like a showroom-it looks like your space.
This is quite a beautiful space, but too cold for my liking. I would have left the ceiling beams natural and maybe some section of the brick unpainted as warm notes in the space. But then, I love the look of ceiling beams and a contrast of wooden beam with white ceiling would have been stunning. It does look VERY glossy magazine worthy. Congrats for having the organization and determination to live like this.
beautiful place. where can i find the bulbs hanging over the dining table? thanks.
This is delightful - the feeling of openness and the carefully chosen pieces. I especially love the elevated office and bedroom, the dining table, and the alternate use of the IKEA cabinets as living room storage.
Is that the Havana sofa? It is one that we have considered purchasing if we buy a loft.
Congratulations on your lovely space!
Very sleek and sophisticated. I dig the use of IKEA cabinets in the living room for storage. I would love to see some art on the walls though.
Hey NJ,
The kitchen light I bought them at Bright Electrical Supply on 1401 w Washington Blvd. I made the whole thing and then wired it in to a box. Any specialty electrical supply stores would have this stuff. Good luck,
Erin, Yes it sure is the Havana Sofa from DWR its a great sofa for a loft and comfortable as well as functional. I used to have a fantastic looking Danish sofa design by Peter Hvidt it looked better than it felt so I hade to get something else.
Love the place! It's incredible and my dream place once we move (we're moving to brooklyn next spring hopefully). Question - I've seen that vertical bookshelf/shelving unit, but can't remember where. So where's it from? Thanks!
love the steel storage doors. Can you give more info on them?
This is beautiful! I love how simple and serene it is. Can you tell me where you purchased the storage cabinet that is right behind the sofa? It is lovely.
That is a GREAT space Andreas! The elevated office area is wonderful.
morgan - I believe the vertical bookshelf unit is the Sapien bookcase, available in two heights from DWR - http://www.dwr.com/productdetail.cfm?id=5280
CB2 sells something similar in a powder-coated aluminum tone finish - http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=118&f=702&viewall=1

Sara- The cabinet is an old Florence Knoll Wall/floor cabinet. Its pretty hard to find, I was looking for a long time for it but they are around last one I saw was at the action house WRIGHT 20 here in Chicago there is a store that used to have one as well. They will run you about $2000-$7000 just to let you know. I think its sold but they have a similar George Nelson one right now check them out and maybe give them a call
http://www.retroinferno.com
Good luck.
Stp – there is a link up top for the steel doors just click on it and it will take you to the people that I bought mine from. Give them a call they are really helpful. http://www.steelbuilding.com/
Thank you andreas for responding to my question! I thought the cabinet looked like Florence K., but was optimistic that it was another IKEA cabinet. Alas, you have confirmed my suspicions. I love Wright 20 but have never heard of retroinferno.com. It looks great;thank you for the tip.
Sara
Love the Ikea cabinets in the living room. You have a beautiful place. The scale of your furnishing choices are right on, especially your desk. I would love to know how you attached the curtain in your bedroom. I have done something similar in my bedroom, I took the wall to wall closet out and installed wire shelves onto the wall. I planned on putting a ceiling installed curtain track the whole length but do not know where to buy it. It needs to be flexible to curve in an "L" shape to hide the office area also.
Days later, I am still staring at these pictures.
Andreas....where is the television located now?
Walter- I do not like the look of a big TV or an LCD. I have a projector mounted in the ceiling, that I have hooked up to the cable box and my DVD player.
I project the image straight on to the wall, it works great.
Beautiful condo. I loved the sliding-door storage cabinet in living room(where is it from?) and the white one along the wall- is that from IKEA? My favorite store is Room and Board. I was planning to get a dining table from them very similar to your Piet Hein table, but not white.(http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/coll.do?coll=RB3588&dept=RB111)
very cool, and it is not too DWR, its also warm and charming something alot of modern spaces dont have
QUESTION!
why did you paint the floors instead of ebony stain?
just wondering, thanks~
Hi :)))))))))))))))
Are you still looking for a girlfriend?????? hehehe
Here I am! :D
hi andreas,
I love your place. I'm just about your neighbor behind UIC.
I'm getting a quote from steelbuilding-one for my laundry room and one for a bar.
they advised against the 605 if it's to be opened more than once a week. have you had any problems? I assume you are using it for a closet?
Any installation tips?
Any info would be great!
talk to you soon,
art.
best house tour yet. by far. it DOES look like something i've seen before... but in an illums bolighus catalog. so fantastic.
Andreas, truly beautiful. I am relocating from NYC to Chicago and would love some advice. Is there some way I could email you? I'd love to know what the brand of porch paint is that you used, how many coats, and where you are in Greektown and why you chose it, since I don't know where I'm supposed to live (I don't know Chicago at all).
Thanks very much for your help!
