Name: Crystal & Gavin Gregory
Location: Parkwood — Shoreline (Seattle) WA
Size: 920 square feet
Years lived in: 2 — owned
The owner and creator of Modernist Cat (featured on AT back in January) recently opened up her newly renovated home for us. Vintage feline ledges and custom-built catwalks compliment Crystal's handmade modernist cat furniture, which blends seamlessly with the home's MCM pieces. With a lot of elbow grease and creative solutions, Crystal and Gavin have transformed this house into a true original:
They put together furniture to make altogether new custom pieces, scour Craigslist for the best (and least expensive) of the best, and use paint and color without fear (easy for Crystal, who is also a portrait painter). The couple also built both of their side-by-side bathrooms from the ground up. The pink bathroom was the original one that they tore out and completely re-did. The grayish blue and orange bathroom used to be the water heater closet, but when Crystal and Gavin decided to go with a tankless water heater, they were able to convert that space into an additional ½ bath for guests. Brilliant problem solving and styling!
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Mid-Century Modern
Inspiration: It all started with a lamp and Herman Miller shell chair; our small space gives us unique ideas, our small budget keeps us creative, and our two Sphynx cats make the final decisions!
Favorite Element: Gavin loves our newly re-upholstered (by me) 3-seater tandem bench and I love our teak display credenza w/ floating top!
Biggest Challenge: Building our new bathrooms
What Friends Say: hmn, I know they like it and appreciate how much work we put into making it look nice to hang out. I've been asked to pick out furniture for my friends so I think that says a lot.
Biggest Embarrassment: our kitchen.... UGH!!!
Proudest DIY: OUR BATHROOMS!!
Biggest Indulgence: Our teak fold-away kitchen table/cabinet piece that we created by putting two pieces of furniture together. We spent $520 on this and that's A LOT for us to spend on one thing!!
Best Advice: Shop on Craigslist. Don't be afraid to make mistakes because you will. Don't forget to express who you are in your space.

The fact that you love your animals so much makes me love this house tour.
I absolutely love the way everything is beautiful but still keeps your cats in mind. One question, though...
How did you train your cats the difference between THEIR shelves, and the glass knick-knack shelves in the bathroom?
I LOVE your house!
Wow, what a transformation! Love the style, the colours, and of course the cats! And yes, I second Shadlyn's question! :)
Lovin' It!! Great job.
Love the transformation of the whole house! Instructions on how to make customized cat walks would be great. Your pic with your animals at the dining room table is so amusing. I also enjoyed the large cat portrait :) An inspiration for a cat lover like me.
@Shadlyn and Nomadchicky
That is a good question! I can honestly say that I'm not sure but very thankful that they don't bother with those shelves. I wouldn't be surprised though that b/c they have SO MANY places to climb and hide that they don't need to bother with the few spaces that are off limits! Or at least that's what I'd like to think. :-) Crystal
Ever since I read the "Cat Who..." mysteries, where the main character renovated a barn and put catwalks in his new home, I have wanted the same. I love how you accomplished that in your home! Thank you for sharing!
You two did an amazing job renovating this house! And high five for your bold and awesome use of color.
That sideboard/buffet is beautiful!
Please tell me the bones hanging above your bed aren't past pets.
Amazing remodel. You really saw alot of potential. But I'll be honest, I just viewed the pics to see the Italian Greyhounds. I have one as well.
@Sam I am
Oh my gosh NO!!
The ribs are made from paper mache!
Crystal
@Gitti
Thank you!
I love painting pet & people portraits!!

Wow. I loved your space but the before pics truly gave me an appreciation for all of the work you two have done. Bravo! I love your furniture and paint colors. Of course, Your pets are delightful and they seem to enjoy the place as well.
@Crystal: Oh, thank god. :)
Love that the before pics were included. Nice transformation!
Great style, and the Italian greys are just about the cutest things on the planet! (I have full-size English greyhounds, and they are delightful.)
iggies!! every house needs an iggie
fun house tour! and i love that danish mid-century cabinet. what a steal!
chelsealynla.blogspot.com
What a truly amazing house tour! The well-proportioned and well-thought-out interiors reflect the owner's lifestyles and personalities (rather than a design catalog, which occurs too frequently on AT). The his/her bathrooms were a cool touch. I can only imagine how those cats use the hallway ledge. If I had a quibble it was that some rooms are lacking adequate light. (Maxwell warns about this in the Apartment Therapy book... and truly, it is so easy to end up with that problem.) Sadly, some of the back rooms have little in the way of windows which, combined with dark walls, give the impression of a finished basement. Perhaps a splurge on proper windows is in their future?
Love love love this house.
Also wanted to state that I also love the sideboard--which incredibly fits the rest of the decor as if it's a built-in. And the papier-mache ribs (hate to admit that little fact makes me breathe easier) really struck me with the creativity and feeling.
The pink bathroom isn't to my taste (great reno job though), but I love the second bathroom and the rest of the house is fabulous.
Wow, what a great house! I live in the same neighborhood - had no idea anybody so cool lived here. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for this house in real life!
What an great transformation! I love your iggies!!
Beautiful home, but the dogs steal the show! :)
Amazing before and after transformation....thanks for sharing!
Love the house, but especially the iggies! Thanks for sharing.
those are cats?
Are those bones hanging over the bed? Pretty home - but the bones are a little creepy.
Excellent job! Love it! And your cats are gorgeous! LOVE the nekkids!
Your house is absolutely fabulous - great use of color, creative touches everywhere, and a source of inspiration for all of us with limited budgets! It is so good to see a featured house tour that showcases a home that actually looks like someone lives there! I can look at your pictures and think "I can do this" rather than "I wish I had the money to be able to do this" - no small accomplishement. Your pets are all handsome - and I think that MCM is the perfect style for them as well! My favorite house tour ever!
Great place love the MCM and hairless cats! Where did you get those frames in the 11th picture? They look like a Polaroid frame.
Amazing, amazing, amazing!! I am IN AWE. The before pictures literally made my jaw drop - the transformation of the inside and outside of your home is unbelievable. We remodeled our place by ourselves so I can appreciate the incredible amount of work you have done!! I've never seen a pet oriented space that didn't look like a pet oriented space. What an incredible exercise in efficiency, beauty, good taste and ingenuity. And those bathrooms took my breath away. You should be extremely proud!!
Your sphynx is gorgeous! Love the colors. My question is totally off topic, but I'm so curious. I'm guessing your dogs are whippets or something similar? I've been told that whippets are not good with cats. Seeing as I already have a sphynx, and am looking at whippets, I'm curious to hear your take. Feel free to answer in comments, contact me directly, or not at all if this question is just too weird/off topic. ;)
Awesome! As the proud owner of two maine coons, this is pure inspiration.....I love it!
Two Italian Greyhounds and two kitties? I am so jealous! I also love the His-and-Hers bathrooms.
@Kay McCurley, Whippets have a very strong prey drive because the breed was developed to hunt rabbits. It's super fast because it also was developed to race competitively. My two whippets behave while boarded in the home of a family with mellow, dog-tolerant house cats. However, they want to chase any animals smaller than themselves, including cats, that run from them. A whippet with the opportunity to do so may well become a cat-killer. Some have even killed toy or miniature dogs mistaken for prey.
Ironically, whippets are cat-like in many ways. I preferred cats, but because they trigger my asthma I eventually considered dogs when I began craving cuddly house pets. Whippets aren't for every one, e.g., they dislike cold, and are sensitive, i.e., easily traumatized by abuse. The Italian greyhound, shown in this post, is very similar to, but smaller than, the whippet. That breed was developed to be a lap dog, a companion. It may suit you better. Good luck!
@Kay McCurly
I'm not familiar with Whippet Personalities but my Italian Greyhounds are good with cats. These four have only been living together for a few months and the Iggie additions to our family have taken some time getting used to for our Sphynx's but over-all I'm happy with their interaction. The Iggies can get excited and chase the cats but they stop when told; however, I've known Iggies to play with cats as if they were cats!! These dogs are amazing and if you want to look into getting one please contact your local Italian Greyhound Rescue b/c our rescue receives new Iggies every week and they all need forever homes!! People turn them in b/c they can be hard to house break and they are not good with small kids b/c they are fragile and need LOT'S of LOVE!! I hope this helps!
Crystal
Love this space.
LOVE the cats.
Awesome job on the renos...Be very proud.
:)
Ok first of all NOT a fan of those hairless cats but do love the bathrooms!! Glad to hear the skeletons are not real..
@CPeriodDesign
The Polaroid frames are by Umbra!

Great space, and amazing renovation job! One question: where is the white, stacked light to the right of the 3-seater tandem bench from?
His and hers bathrooms and rib mobiles over the bed--how fabulous! Love the paintings too. Great place for humans, canines and felines alike. Keep on truckin'!
Modernist Cat
Ah, well. I've pretty much accepted that my cats go EVERYWHERE I could have trained them off counters and saved hassle, but I LIKE them on high things! They don't distinguish surfaces all that well, so that means ALL surfaces are fair game. In order to be surprised and delighted by "top of the fridge cat" I must occasionally accept "knocked the water glass over cat".
I'm just glad I've mostly trained them away from the TV associated cords. :P
@ac at artslope
The white stacked cube light is from Ikea.
Crystal
Love this! Anyone who thinks they don't like hairless cats needs to touch and see one in person, I did recently at a cat show and they are so gorgeous and soft and I wanted to take them home. I think cats are pretty human anyway and without fur they're like little people (god I sound like a freak). Cat-lover that I am, I still don't let my cats on the table though :) The dogs are gorgeous too, I have a short haired Jack Russell Fox Terrier cross, they look a bit like her but skinnier. Love greyhounds, they are apparently very good with small children, is this true?
I wish I could be you! Maybe after a few more MCM pieces (baby steps) and another IG?
@Pipstar, Small world--I met a beautiful senior female Jack Russell cross named Heidi. She loved my husband at first sight, squeezed into his chair against him, and promptly fell asleep. Older dogs generally are my favorites. I decided against any toy or miniature breed after reading they're sometimes killed when their owners unintentionally step on them. (I have slow reflexes, and walk awkwardly due to back trouble.)
A runt greyhound or a greyhound-whippet cross initially were the runners-up after an extensive hunt for the best breed for my home. However, after having whippets, I know that a dog between 20 and 35 pounds is best for me. I researched extensively to avoid the heartbreak of getting a dog and then having to give it up because of a bad match.
Greyhounds have many good qualities, although they're too big for me. My friend volunteers extensively in local greyhound rescue. Check www.FriendsOfGreyhounds.org Their adopters' manual can be printed from their site, and is also useful with related sight hounds, such as whippets and Italian greyhounds.
how lucky are those kitties to have a kitten run along the walls? Jealous.
I love that fold away table cum storage unit in your dining room - amazing that you cobbled it together yourselves. It's *exactly* what I'm looking for in my own space - any chance of a tutorial? Pretty pleeeeeease....?
Second the tutorial on the dropleaf table and cabinet. This looks as though it could be built in between wall studs, or constructed as a free-standing unit. You could augment your income with Internet sales of plans for building this item.
@webpossum & @littlepitcher -
The table is a Skovby SM101 which is a fairly expensive table that we got for a steal on craigslist. I had the idea that perhaps there is a hutch out there somewhere with similar measurements and I went combing through craigslist and really lucked into the piece I found. What you see in that photo is the top of a two piece hutch which (in a stroke of enormous luck) not only matched the dimensions of the folded Skovby, but also in stain.
We mounted the top piece to the wall using heavy weight tested Toggle Snap Toggle anchors, simply measuring it carefully so it would float about an inch above the table while folded and sitting against the wall.
Here are photos of the table opened and closed. (Forgive our old paint color, ha ha).

Best of luck recreating something similar! I do know there's been some chatter on this blog about drop leaf's before - check here for some ideas - http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/good-questions/good-questions-drop-leaf-table-alternatives-019423
@ Modernist Cat -
well I'm now even more jealous. Sweet deals + stroke of luck = kismet. Tx for sharing the details, I'm off to scour my local craigslist and vintage shops!
awesome house, but weird animals...the cats are too much! lol
Love the beautiful cats! As a Whippet owner of 20 yrs I must say that they aren't very good with cats. I used to take my 3 whippets to work ( a veterinary clinic) with me. They quickly learned not to bother any cats at the clinic. However, outside the strong prey takes over. These dogs can hit a top speed of 60K and they will chase and catch rabbits, squirrels, and cats. Inside they like to sleep on my bed, couch, or the softest chair. They need coats in the winter (Canada, eh). They are deceptively sturdy for what looks to be a delicate breed. Whippets have an affinity for children. Italian greyhounds are from the Toy group and are better with cats. Especially if raised with them. Hope this helps.
Are those cats . . . naked?
I sort of want someone to knit them little outfits - it gets chilly sometimes in Seattle!
Lovely place, thanks for sharing!
i had two of those IKEA white stacked cube lamps in my LA loft years ago...they are so sculptural and cool. does IKEA still carry them? love your polraroid wall of snaps!
Great house. Sounds like the cats are doomed.
I'm a little creeped out at the cats sitting in the dishes on the table.
Thanks for the before photos - amazing transformation! I enjoyed the tour but when I got to the 'before' shots I was in awe.
On the topic of whippets - we have a sweet whippet who is GREAT with cats and kids. He was raised with them which I think is key. I also suspect he is part cat himself. :o)
Your Italian Greyhounds are darling.
I love how you have balanced a hip yet warm design with a great space for what I understand to be a very curious and active cat breed in the Sphynx. Cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy would be over the moon!
This home is witty, endearing and beautiful. I love your use of fabrics. And I'm smitten with your animals.
Wowow, bookmarked. I cannot believe this is the same place as the one in the before pictures. I especially love the pink bathroom with The Black Apple Artwork if I'm not mistaken? It has such a cheeky, refined and whimsical feel. One of my favourite house tours.
Remarkable transformation of the house!!! Your place is so awesome!!! I'm a huge fan of ModernCat, and it is such an inspiration that the creator of the site has impeccable taste and owns such a beautiful house!!
@byphu
The artwork is by Mark Ryden. He has most definitely influenced Black Apple of Etsy Fame.
Crystal
@Ryumama
I'm a huge fan of ModernCat too but that belongs to Kate Benjamin!
I'm the creator of Modernist Cat, I make mid-century modern litter box covers!
I'm so glad you like my home!
Crystal
@ Crystal,
Wow, I'm envious. Absolutely beautiful home and the topper, the Iggs and Sphynxs. Love both breeds but happen to have a pair of cornish rex's -- same train of thought ;).
I absolutely adore the cat wall hangings above the cat perches. They are gorgeous, where did you get them?
Thank you for sharing.
@Tonkali
I LOVE Rex's i want one of those too! I have not been lucky enough to meet one yet either.
My husband found the plaster cat wall hangings on Craigslist for about $25 for the pair!
Crystal
I love everything about your home!
Did you make those cat perches or repurpose some shelving?
@Mandawest:
I make the Cat Perches!
You can order them from my Etsy shop:
