Name: Dana
Location: Grant Park — Atlanta, Georgia
We bought the house as a foreclosure in 2009. It had been vacant for over a year and severely neglected. Despite having no functioning toilet or shower, no working appliances, outdated electrical and no heating or air conditioning, we still fell in love with this historic home. We loved the look & feel of the 1920's bungalow, recognized that the house had a lot of potential and knew the neighborhood was great…
The floorplan is perfect for 2 people, and there is a finished attic that serves as a home office/den. The original hardwood floors were in great condition and previous owners had added a bonus mudroom and second bathroom on the back of the house. In the backyard, a covered patio leads to a deck shaded by a 100 year old pecan tree.
The biggest challenge with a foreclosure, besides the repairs, is closing on the house (it took us 5 months from the offer date to closing date!). Also, our goal was to have the house move-in ready a month after the closing. I played general contractor to get all systems in order for the big move. In the first month, we replaced and/or updated the plumbing, electrical, HVAC and appliances. We also put up a fresh coat of paint in every room. As long it was liveable, we would take care of the rest later.
When we merged our furniture, art, and decor, we watched our similar aesthetic come together seamlessly and knew that decorating was going to be fun. We are both lovers of local art, bright colors, vintage and modern, so it is a great collaboration. As a couple that both works in creative fields (Steve, a photographer and myself, an art director), we both have a passion for design and love to recycle & repair. We carefully selected paint colors and discuss every renovation and cosmetic improvement. The house is still a work in progress, but we are having a great time rethinking and perfecting each room as we live, work and entertain in the house.
Thanks, Dana!

wow, that magazine rack is very cool. Not seen one like that before.
ditto. i need that magazine rack.
I love the magazine rack. Info please.
P.S. Love the blue door too.
I just checked the comments to see about the magazine rack, good to see everyone else thought that as well. NEED to know where it is from. Thank you!!!
love the colors. and i'll have to go against the crowd on this one.. when i see the magazine rack, i can only think of doctors' office waiting room.
Congrats on all your hard work! The dining room looks like perfection, would be interested in a house tour for sure.
I love the mag rack too and the red chairs... wow!! Cute place. :)
Love it! especially the magazine rack and door as everyone else said :)
We were involved in a foreclosure sale on a bungalow as well but it fell through.
Your home is much like the one we lost and all our plans to renovate fell through... and I spent way too many hours thinking about those plans!
Great house and congratulations on your wonderful home!
The front door is too cute... I picture Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear all peeking out to see who's on the porch! :)
Using the back of skateboards as canvas for paintings is a creative idea.
Great house
Ditto on the magazine rack - awesome! Would love to know the specifics on that.
O Dana! I have a super, intense crush on your house! I love the way you and hubby managed to use colors and decor that go with the house, not against it. Despite being built in a different era, it has a super cool mid century vibe that I totally dig. I also love that front door and that bike! Yes!
great looking place dana ;) the front porch looks like a great place to hang out!
Artwork on the mantle and in the dining room, please!
Dig the sherbet colors! Very fresh!
house tour please! :D
Love the house!!
-from a Cabbagetown neighbor:)
Magazine rack is adorable!
(This comment is not original, but it is heartfelt!)
It's so great to see a fellow Grant Park resident! I'm struggling to complete (smaller scale) renovations and decorating of my 105 year old Grant Park bungalow, so this was fantastic inspiration! All the best and hope to see you around the neighborhood someday (perhaps at a GPNA meeting or the soon-to-be-opened Farmer's Market!).
I'm wondering, since this couple loves DIY so much, whether the coveted magazine rack was one of their projects. It reminds me of a kid's bookshelf, popular in preschools/daycare. I'm wondering whether this couple simply attached one of these bookcases to a stand?
Thanks for all of the feedback! Looks like we will be doing a full house tour. Coming soon...the background info on the magazine rack and other juicy details.
Where are the coffee table and dresser from? I'm dying to know! Lovely home. :)
What is that paint color in the living and bedroom?? I absolutely love it!
I, too, opened the post just to say how much I like that magazine rack.
Ditto on the dresser. Love it. Need info!
LOVE!
Looks like the magazine rack is a kid's book shelf with hairpin legs -http://hairpinlegs.com/
coffee table??????!!???? please share the source!!
Really cute. Love the magazine rack, the yellow dresser and the blue door.
Simply stunning!
Love! Especially the pops of color against a white backdrop. The turquoise door is awesome. I'll chime in on the mag rack, its really great. I saw some similar racks for ~$25 to $30 at my local borders (minus the legs) as they are closing down that store and selling their fixtures, I was thinking would be so great in a kids room or for magazines in a bedroom with a lower bed.
Love your orange kitchen appliances! I've got pops of orange in my kitchen too.
I too am in love with the magazine rack...I will definitely have to check out Borders before they close...I would probably fill mine with vintage story books :-)
I wonder if we can get a close-up picture of the mobile above the fireplace...? please?! ;-)
like other had said, house tour please!!
AWESOME!
Very creative. It's really an awesome merger of both your design tastes. Love the red chairs.
