Almost every day, Anna and Dan wake up grateful to be living in The Louise Hand Laundry Loft. The building is rich in history, glamor, and legend. The industrial space was built to house a laundry facility, which cleaned White House laundry from the Roosevelt through Kennedy administrations. DC architect Robert Lewis and artist Sanford Shapiro bought it in 1979 and revamped it for residential use. Anna and Dan have heard great stories about their home: the basement once housed a shower for 12 and was famous for its wild parties in the 1980's! Anna now uses the space as her closet/dressing room.
It's no surprise that in Fells Point — a waterfront neighborhood still lined with cobble stone streets and steeped in maritime history — you would find a boat and breakfast. Yes, I said a boat and breakfast...

The Independence Day (July 4th) weekend in DC means huge crowds of tourists, traffic delays, and fantastic fireworks. In past years, we've watched the fireworks from U Street rooftops, friends' balconies in Columbia Heights, and the Marine Corps Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington (great view, fewer people). We've never been brave enough to hit the crowded National Mall. Do you plan to stay in or go out this July 4th holiday? If you're staying in, will you invite friends and family over? Survey and more info on July 4th in DC below the jump...

Apartment Therapy DC reader Emily needs advice on solar water fountains:
"Does anyone have experience with solar fountains? I don't have any electricity on my condo's back patio, which has nice landscaping around it and good privacy, but a bit of traffic noise from the road nearby. I'm thinking of getting a solar fountain to mask the noise somewhat, but I wanted to know other's experience with them. My condo assn does landscaping of trees and bushes nearby so sometimes debris gets on my patio which may get into the fountain, so I'm wondering how easily they might get clogged."

No longer reserved for bumblebees and smiley faces, the black and yellow combo has attracted a wide variety of aesthetes' admiration over the last several years. Normally, we prefer a quieter palette, but when paired with bright whites or applied in unexpected places — outdoors — the bold combination has a lively, sophisticated appeal that we find hard not to swoon over. What about you?
I was once invited to a place that took me back to another era as soon as I walked in the door. Warm light filled the space and after I was stuffed full of amazing appetizers, all I wanted to do was wrap myself up in one of the comfy beds I knew were only a quick trip up an amazingly detailed staircase. The kind of staircase you just don't see anymore; the kind of staircase I wish I had in my home.
