apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

House Tour: Alex's Granny Chic
Washington, DC

alex11.jpg
Name: Alex
Occupation: owner of dog-walking company Loyal Company
Location: U Street Corridor, Washington DC
Size: 1,200 square feet
Lived in: rented for 4 years
Other Occupants: Louis, a 4-year old Italian greyhound

tour2009.jpg Each room of Alex's shotgun apartment has its own decor theme: the Diane Vreeland-inspired red living room; the green room; the calm bedroom; and the "bruised" hallway. The long, shotgun apartment layout lends itself well to different decor in each room. Almost every item in Alex's apartment is vintage or was found, including the oil paintings and sofas. Nothing cost him more than $300...

Alex uses bold colors and prints to make his home a cozy and welcoming but visually exciting place. He's not afraid to pair IKEA sconces with high-end Baker shades. He daringly pairs traditional furniture pieces with trendy pillows and rugs.

APARTMENT THERAPY SURVEY

My Style: traditional, granny chic

Inspiration: so many things! I'm inspired by Tony Duquette, Kelly Wearstler, Jonathan Adler, and a bit of a lodge feel.

Favorite Element: the way the apartment flows on one level, almost like a shotgun-style house. It's bigger than it looks from the outside.

Biggest Challenge: I feel like I'm decorating for the old woman who lived here for 20 years.

What Friends Say: it feels cozy and welcoming.

Biggest Embarrassment: the kitchen and floors.

Proudest DIY: the ode to Diana Vreeland room - red on red on red. Also putting up the shelves, trim, cornices, and curtains.

Biggest Indulgence: I didn't pay more than $300 for anything here. So I guess the two West Elm desks, which I brought brand new.

Best Advice: always go with classic pieces for big items. You can use trendy accents and accessories.

Alex, you give granny chic a good name! From the first photo, the colors, the objects are of a piece, Louis being, of course, the best acoutrement of all.

Great space Alex - I love it!

I have the exact same white ceramic artichoke lamp base - actually a pair. Can I suggest swapping out that ivory shade for a slightly smaller black drum shade lined w/ gold foil, and adding a brass finial? It will make your lamp look like a million bucks!

I'm totally bookmarking this. Your place is original without being contrived, full of interest but not cluttered, and I feel like I get a sense of who you are (rather than just where you like to shop) from the decor. My grandma had rooms devoted to particular colors, too; even though I suspect you were getting at something else by calling your style granny chic, you struck a chord with me on that one. Lovely job.

This is beautiful! I especially love the crewel sofa and the zig-zaggy rug and the barrel (captain?) chairs and the floral chair in the redroom... it's all incredible. At risk of sounding silly, I think the interactions between the different pieces are great. Each room is a cohesive vignette, something that's easy to do when all your furniture comes from the same place at the same time but I think harder when you put together lots of pieces from different places at different times in your life.
Of course Louis is the perfect accessory. You both look very happy there.

Love this place! If only all grannies were so chic! This is the kind of look I like best, one that says you have creativity and know how to thrift. It looks amazing and doesn't cost a fortune. I'm way more impressed when someone can pull this off, it's easy (well, if you've got the money) to just go out and buy stuff and arrange it.

The gray living room looks straight out of the "Mad Men" tv set. So cool!

I can't get over the awesomeness and oddness of the chandelier on the lucite boxes. Does the chandelier work? If so, how does that look? I think it would make some crazy shadows and stuff with the lucite boxes and all.
