Although I can't actually live here, working on this mini home for the past few months certainly makes it feel like I could curl up on the tiny couch and call it home. The idea of a renovating and decorating a dollhouse was interesting to me because it allowed me to decorate rooms and transform spaces in days rather than weeks/months and to be honest, I was looking for a project with a little more instant gratification. (Let's just say I had just finished a "real size" room project that wasn't nearly as satisfying!)
I purchased the dollhouse from a work friend and in its original state, it was this massive, barn-style house covered in orange-y, lacquered wood. The first thing I did was remove the gloss and paint the rooms white, the exterior gray and the roof a dark walnut brown.
When it came to decorating, I wanted it to reflect my style vs. the typical, traditional style you see in dollhouses these days. Some rooms are dead on my style (like the living room) while others are a little more contemporary (the dining room). Most of the items were donated or borrowed from friends and the rest I DIY'ed (like the couch). The dollhouse world is an expensive one (mini modern sofas are $50+!) but I managed to get it done without missing a mortgage payment.
This project is part of a bigger challenge called, "I'm a Giant!," set forth by Emily Henderson. It was an incredibly therapeutic process for me (a sense of accomplishment! crafting! new dollhouse friends!) and it gave me access into a world I knew nothing about 6 months ago.

love the idea of using a dollhouse to express your design talent than using your actual living space. it can be a lot more expensive switching out pieces all the time, not to mention the time and effort it takes to move everything =P
great idea. the house is adorable!
That is really wonderful and it looks like it was a lot of fun to do.
I have a doll house in my garage that my dad built for my daughter. I've fantasized about doing something like this for a long time and having it be an interesting piece of art for my home. This should motivate me to get started.
I'd love to have a list of resources for doll house furniture, etc.
I could definitely see renting a place in Mainstrasse and redecorating it like this.
I really like the chandelier in the dining room!
The buttons as miniature pop art for the wall are just delightful!
I can't believe I saved a few images to my inspiration folder before realizing this is a dollhouse...
I would also love a post which lists resources where to get all the stuff needed to make a great dollhouse. Looks wonderful.
OMG, i love it. it took me a minute to figure out it was a doll house. yeah. really fun to see.
I love this! So creative. I adore dollhouse miniatures but get tired of seeing all the Victorian cliches. This is awesome! I just made a little Swedish holiday house and decorated it with cheap finds and stuff I had lying around the apartment. It's very girly ... In the real world, I have to compromise on every little design decision with my husband, but this baby was ALL MINE!
Heh. Didn't realize just how mini this was for a few moments. Nice job, Emily!
I really think this is a cute, well done project. I'm still waiting for someone to say what a travesty the painted wood is or something, because it looks that real!
