Emily's Mighty Modern Mini Home

House Call

Name: Emily
Location: Covington, Kentucky

Although I can't actually live here, working on this mini home for the past few months certainly makes it feel like I could curl up on the tiny couch and call it home. The idea of a renovating and decorating a dollhouse was interesting to me because it allowed me to decorate rooms and transform spaces in days rather than weeks/months and to be honest, I was looking for a project with a little more instant gratification. (Let's just say I had just finished a "real size" room project that wasn't nearly as satisfying!)

I purchased the dollhouse from a work friend and in its original state, it was this massive, barn-style house covered in orange-y, lacquered wood. The first thing I did was remove the gloss and paint the rooms white, the exterior gray and the roof a dark walnut brown.

When it came to decorating, I wanted it to reflect my style vs. the typical, traditional style you see in dollhouses these days. Some rooms are dead on my style (like the living room) while others are a little more contemporary (the dining room). Most of the items were donated or borrowed from friends and the rest I DIY'ed (like the couch). The dollhouse world is an expensive one (mini modern sofas are $50+!) but I managed to get it done without missing a mortgage payment.

This project is part of a bigger challenge called, "I'm a Giant!," set forth by Emily Henderson. It was an incredibly therapeutic process for me (a sense of accomplishment! crafting! new dollhouse friends!) and it gave me access into a world I knew nothing about 6 months ago.
