I've finally come to the conclusion that not all doormats are created equal. While the $10 coir doormat from Target seemed like a good idea at the time, the cheap price tag should have also clued me into the kind of quality I'd be getting. For those with an entryway that doesn't open immediately into their livingroom, this might not be an issue — but when the fur-balls pale in comparison to the constant vacuuming of shedding coir fibers, then yes, it's time for a change!
Here are a few of the contenders, although currently the Chilewich Shag and Cape Cod are leading the pack!
1 Chilewich Shag Doormat/Utility Mat - Tufted from durable vinyl yarns for a textured "looped" look. $45 - $150
2 Diamond Stainless Doormat - A non-rust stainless steel overlay backed with non-skid rubber matting, $68
3 Tree Trimmings Doormat - Formed rounds of small cutaway branches on an EVA backing, $75
4 Lattice Rubber Doormat - Made from 100% eco-friendly rubber with a molded base to keep it in place, $25 - $59
5 Cape Cod Doormat - Made from polypropylene cordage which contains a UV additive to prevent fading, $35 - $80
So while coir mats (also known as coconut fiber) of all sorts will be banned from my front door forever, I will be ushering in doormats of a different kind; vinyl, rubber, even rope. Has anyone else had to deal with coir fibers being tracked throughout their house?

Once you go Chilewich you'll never go back. They are great for the kitchen too.
I have coir mats from IKEA at the front and back doors. So far they've never shed, not even after stomping the Chicago winter off my boots and onto them for months at a time.
This is a timely Roundup! I'm thinking of getting a few of the ubiquitous Flor tiles as a mini rug, but I like the Chilewich mats a lot. I'm not sure how they'd handle winter mess, though, since they can't absorb any moisture at all. Thoughts?
I got the recycled lobster trap rope doormat from Green Depot and it's great. Cheaper than those listed too. It's not shedding but I've only had it about a month, so I have not yet seen what it will be like in the long term. But it seems awfully sturdy.
chilewich are the BEST!!! I have a big one in my kitchen. Looks good and so easy to clean (except for play doh)
we have the TRAMPA door mat from IKEA (a latex-backed fiber mat)... at under $10, it makes a lot of sense for a house with so many entries/exits/sliding doors as ours. we have one on the inside and outside of each major thru-way (8, at least). They trap dirt much better than the flat (or tufted) vinyl mats (and we have a few of those, too) at a fraction of the price.
We have an Ikea option that's served us well and I just got 2 of the indoor/outdoor flor tiles to serve as a door mat- I think they will go outside (under an overhang they will be fine.)
Cape Cod Doormats are made in America! Buy quality and buy American.
