I visited our local farm earlier this week and came home with a varied collection of fun pumpkins. After spotting some pumpkin planters online, I think I have my next gardening project. Here are ten pumpkin planters for both inside and outside that will surely make your home more festive.
You remember moving to your city, right? Do you remember your first night there? The place you ordered in from three nights in a row because your kitchen was still in boxes? Your first apartment, which was perfect because it was yours?
Heather couldn't believe it, but she was about to hit her 15th anniversary of moving to New York. She lives in a different borough now, and has a husband and two kids, but her love affair with her city has remained a constant through life's many changes. Heather says she'll use any excuse to throw a party, but what better reason than her 15th anniversary of living in New York? We helped her customize her party decor at Shutterfly, and then came over to see her gorgeous party setup, including a very original use for coasters – can you spot them?
To jumpstart your Monday, here's an absolute favorite find from the last few musical months. The song is by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and performed by these two Canadian sisters, 15 and 10, with wonderful rhythm and harmony. You may also know them from their roles on Nashville. Look out for Maisy sticking her hands up in the air. :)
Photo booths at Halloween parties are like water in the desert — a welcome respite from social dryness, and an instant boost for your crowd. Even if guests say they don't like having their photos taken, everyone lets go for a minute or two, and relaxes their guard enough to get in on it. It's also a great way to document your guests — in all their costumed glory — for posterity.
Before the airwaves are flooded with that other holiday music, get into a festive spirit with this mixtape of moody music perfect for a gathering of Halloween revelers. The music ranges from somber and atmospheric to bone-shakin' dance tunes—all enjoyable with or without a costume.
My friend Jenny is a wine consultant and together we threw an outdoor dinner highlighting the wines of Napa Valley, along with hearty, easy, grilled food and bonfires on either side of the dinner table. I wrote about our joint Summer Bonfire Feast last month, and today Jenny's back to share more about the wines she paired with the meal. These are GOOD recommendations.
The holidays are approaching and you know what that means: pie! Maybe that sounds like a joke, but eating pie (and most holiday foods) is a perfect example of a ritual at home. And the more you practice them, the richer these rituals become.
Just like rooms, parties need a large focal point - a statement piece that makes a huge impact. Not all of us are artists though, and need a little help creating compelling custom images. For this year’s Halloween party, we created a large art banner based on a vintage palmistry board game. While great for parties, this technique also translates well into wall murals and DIY art. It’s an easy and painless way to bang for the buck.
A mystical theme calls to mind fortune tellers on a boardwalk, tarot readings, and the spectacle of discovery. For the party decorations, we used deep jewel tones that are colorful and rich, with yards of fabric in competing patterns.
