Name: Tracey Tilley
Location: Metro Detroit, Michigan
Size: 1,050 square feet
Years lived in: 12 years, owned
When Tracey is not working as a marketing project manager, she is obsessing over her house's interior. She prefers furnishings that are old and built to last. She believes in supporting local artists. She really enjoys a good flea-market find. And she has been known to DIY a few things. Not surprisingly, her home in Michigan is a sophisticated mix.
According to Tracey's website, she "started her career as a professional studio photographer and later began working as a freelance photographer and graphic designer." Though she's now in a full-time marketing role, she still takes photos. The view of each room in her home is well-composed, bright and pleasant to look at.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Boho, modern, vintage, eclectic.
Inspiration: The free bohemian spirit of the '60s and '70s, the minimalism movement, nature, the desert, and all of my Detroit artist friends!
Favorite Element: The coved ceilings, original floors, and pocket doors.
Biggest Challenge: The small rooms are always a challenge. Finding furniture that is comfortable, functions well, and fits the scale of the room can be difficult. In a small house things can get cluttered very easily, too, so embracing minimalism has been a necessity.
What Friends Say: "It's so clean!" Honestly though, our friends love our house and always have nice things to say. It's a fun place to gather and get a little rowdy. I swear it's not *that* clean. :)
Biggest Embarrassment: Probably the landscaping. I can't seem to keep anything alive outside. I'm hoping to turn it around this summer!
Proudest DIY: Refinishing the hardwood floors. It was a very intense and daunting project, but it saved us so much money!
Biggest Indulgence: The Smeg Fridge. 100% worth it. It's a beauty!
Best Advice: Take your time finding the right pieces, and decorate over time. As your style evolves, so will your house. Keep clutter at bay, and only allow items that you really love to come into your home. Let your home reflect your personality and fill it with pieces that are meaningful and have a story. Don't worry too much about what's on trend, be yourself!
