Name: Isaac Aptaker
Location: Silver Lake; Los Angeles, CA
Size: 1,200 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years; Owned

Aside from the fact that it's oozing with Mid-century charm, Isaac Aptaker's home in the hills on the east side of Los Angeles has two big things going for it: privacy, and spectacular views of the city. Isaac takes full advantage of the surrounding neighborhood, regularly running around the Silver Lake reservoir with his dog Giuseppe and frequenting the shops and restaurants in Sunset Junction. His job as a screenwriter often means long hours, but the stunning view from his home office makes the challenge of a deadline easier to stomach.

While the home presents some interesting challenges (a sometimes unruly yard, limited closet space, and the question of what to do with that awkward area remaining when you tuck away the Murphy bed in the office— ideas, anyone?), Isaac has made a number of improvements since purchasing what was a fixer-upper, transforming it into the charming retreat that it is today. His crown jewel is his recently remodeled bathroom, which went from being a dim, damp space to a testament to his good taste.

Isaac’s passion for design and Mid-century furniture is evident throughout his home, but you might be most impressed (or mildly infuriated) with his uncanny ability to score a killer Craigslist deal. Check out the source list to see just how many items he has acquired by keeping a diligent eye on that website!

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: Mid-Century Leather Cozy

Inspiration: Hugh Grant’s apartment in About a Boy, the Ace Hotels, Pendleton catalogs, Charles and Ray Eames, J. Crew Men’s Stores, the website TRNK

Favorite Element: The big picture windows overlooking the Hollywood sign and the Griffith Observatory, which is my favorite building in LA.

Biggest Challenge: The ugly mirrored wall in my living room which I partially hid with wall shelves. Or the total lack of closet space. Apparently when my house was built in the early 1950s, people didn’t own things.

What Friends Say: “Wow, Isaac, I am so lucky to have you in my life! Thank you for inviting me into your glorious home! It’s such a respite from the stresses of modern city life!” That, or: “Nice place, man.”

Biggest Embarrassment: The super 1980s peeling laminate kitchen cabinets. Also, whatever weird fungus is devouring my cactus, which I’m really hoping is not the plant-based neurotoxin from M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening that (Spoiler alert) causes people to commit mass suicides.

Proudest DIY: The Eames chairs in my dining room, which I restored from gum-covered messes salvaged from a church basement.

Biggest Indulgence: My original Rosewood 1950s Eames lounge chair.

Best Advice: If you live in a big city, you can get pretty much anything for an insane price on Craigslist. Be polite, negotiate hard, and find a good, reliable delivery guy. Also be warned that your girlfriend and all your friends will start to seriously resent you for compulsively refreshing the site on your phone, but know that really they’re just jealous you found a sweet vintage leather couch for six hundred bucks.
