We love to write about clever, multitasking furniture designs for small spaces, but the downside to a lot of these pieces is that they come with hefty price tags. If, like a lot of people, you’re living in a small space and have a similarly small budget, the good news is that there are a lot of DIYs out there for hardworking, flexible furniture that you can make yourself. Here are 11 of our favorites.

Above, a custom table created for this tiny beach house seen at VT Wonen. If you want to make your own, Shanty 2 Chic has a very similar DIY. It folds neatly into the wall when not in use, so it doesn’t take up any floor space at all.

Above: From Coco Lapine Design comes this DIY for a ‘planter closet’. If you’re not so into the planter aspect, but are in need of a little extra closet space (a common complaint in small apartments), you can make this project sans the hole at the top and just have a good-looking place to stash all your stuff.

You could buy a storage bed, or create your own with this DIY from Make It Boho. Instead of having drawers on both sides like a typical storage bed, this one has extra-deep drawers on just one side, perfect for a room where one side of the bed needs to be against the wall.

This DIY hall tree from Angela Marie Made will fit even a small entryway, and provide plenty of space to hang and store things, as well as a bench for taking off shoes.

From Sinnen Rausch, a DIY for a teeny tiny sofa-side table, which can be moved around to wherever you need a spot for your drink.

A dining table is nice to have, but it can also take up a lot of space when you’re not using it. This dining table folds up (and looks just like a wall mirror!) when not in use. DIY from Home Story. Instructions in English can be found at Handimania.

This slim behind-the-sofa table from Almost Never Done is a genius solution for spaces too small to accommodate an end table.

Fitting in a guest bed is a particularly tricky prospect in a small space. If you’re handy, and you have a lot of friends spend the night, try this folding coffee table that turns into a twin bed. DIY from Rockler Woodworking and Hardware.

This rolling couch slash bed slash storage unit, made from some plywood and an architects’ flat file, is from Fugitive Glue, via Public Displays of Affection. Unfortunately there’s no DIY, but if you are wise in the ways of furniture making this might inspire you.

This foldable craft table from Remodelaholic can be made from lumber you find at the hardware store. And it’s extremely verstaile, folding from just a little more than a foot wide to more than five feet wide to accommodate crafts or dinner parties or jigsaw puzzles or whatever you can dream up.

This rolling pantry is only 8″ wide and fits into a narrow space next to the fridge — perfect for adding a little extra storage to a small kitchen. Get the how-to at DIY Passion.
