Remember these stairs? We slinked to them earlier this year after AT:LA blogged them. It turns out that they were made by an Australian company, Unicraft Joinery. We've been haunted by them ever since, but were somewhat dissuaded by the naysayers on Lifehacker and Unclutterer...

Great idea for small homes!
In theory, I love this idea. However, I would be worried that someone (in the rare event) might leave a drawer open, and as I'm going down the stairs . . . . .crrrrrrash.
Having twisted my ankle several times in the past, I cringe just thinking about this.

Probably not permissable by building code precisely because of the potential problem david points out.
I agree about the forgetting to close the drawer comment...
Also, I think they could be improved by being handleless. I don't like seeing that little pull, and although I think drawer handles might be cute on them, you could stub your toe on them.
Spring loading the drawers so that they automatically close when you release the handle might be a good solution.
Love this idea! But imagine the butt-kicking the one who leaves one open would get.
I have this, but they aren't pull out drawers. My stairs are designed so certain steps have tops that lift up. One of the benefits of having a 200 year house--it was the 19th century version of a built-in safe!
