Cat owners rejoice! IKEA customers have been pleading for pet-friendly furniture for years, and the Swedish giant finally responded this week with KÄT, a sofa/cat scratcher hybrid that is designed specifically for pet-loving people. KÄT has normal cushions for human comfort, but its unique base is made from corrugated cardboard. It’s perfect for felines who want to sharpen their claws….without ruining your furniture.

Made solely out of cardboard from trees sourced in the far north of Sweden, each tree used for the new sofa is carefully selected and processed to use as much of the wood as possible. That means less waste, along with a happy kitty!

IKEA spokesperson Lykke Eklund says she believes the KÄT is the first of its kind in the world. It came about after the Swedish company’s year-long study on how people live with their pets. The company will watch sales carefully in the coming month to determine demand, and to possibly develop more pet-happy products in the future.

While the KÄT has been available in Japan since January, it will make it debut in the United States this summer. We’ll keep you posted when we have a more definitive date.

(Happy April Fools Day!)
