Name: Kathleen Whitaker and Bradford Whitaker
Location: Echo Park - Los Angeles, California
Size: 2200 square feet
Years lived in: 8 months
Kathleen and Bradford live at the top of the hill in Echo Park. You drive up and up and up and then when you get to the very top you walk down a set of stairs to reach their front door. Their house is very private with an incredible view. I will admit I am a bit (ok a lot) jealous.

Kathleen and Bradford's house reminds me of a home on the East Coast — white paneling, creaky wooden staircase and slanted ceilings. I especially love the very small, cozy bathroom, which Kathleen says is a favorite among guests. The more I visit these charming homes in Echo Park, the more I am getting swayed to move on over to the East Side.

Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: A mix of heritage and handmade.
Inspiration: Its setting. Every vista offers treetops during the day and twinkling lights at night. It's a very romantic spot in a beautiful, inspiring neighborhood.
Favorite Element: The house is over 100 years old, having been built in 1909. So all the original features like the wide pocket door and large leaded-glass windows feel really special. Another great element is in the basement. One side is a sheer rock wall - the bedrock the house is built into.
It was great to see the house through the lens of our good friend, architect Jeff Phelps, who visited us right after we moved in. There are strange add-ons — a wall there, a header here — that are clearly NOT original to the house, but they add character; they were added in response to what the house needed. It's nice to embrace little oddities like that.
Biggest Challenge: Harmony! It's natural to want to make your mark on your OWN home, but what if your co-habitants don't like what your mark looks like? Or the timeframe in which you plan to complete making your mark? Hypothetically speaking.
What Friends Say: A friend the other day called it "epic." We think he was referring to the amount of work ahead.
Biggest Embarrassment: No A/C, which on 4th of July with 50 people in our home and the oven cranked to 400, was a bit of an embarrassment. Also, the skunk living under the back deck makes for smelly outdoor evening dinner parties.
Proudest DIY: Doing the demo and new drywall in the living room, followed by the new bookcase and mantel. There's also the kitchen shelves, bedroom side tables, and small bathroom shelf. Repairing the aforementioned 100-year-old pocket door eaten through by the new puppy. Doing all the plumbing and electric required for installing a new washer and dryer. This is a house for the ambitious and capable (aka "Bradford").
Biggest Indulgence: So far no big ticket spends besides the taxes.
Best Advice: Maybe most thought-provoking advice: "Sell it. Don't hold on to it for 20 or 30 years or grow too attached." We've both had old family houses sold and later demolished. It's a heartbreak when you lose a house you're emotionally attached to. Plus, you know, there's also the eye of the needle and whatnot.
Dream Source: Antique stores in Summerland, Pasadena, and Long Beach. In Los Angeles: IKO IKO, Casbah Café, Grain, Dosa, Galerie Half. On the web: 1st Dibs.

Super cute use of small space! The windows in the home are fab!! Love how the light shines through. Awwww CUTE dog!!! :) :)
Love the dining room and all the custom shelves. Great job!
Love your ceiling pendant in the light filled sitting room. Where did you find such an amazing little pendant?
I think your style is my style. Well done!
This house, totally empty, is beautiful in and of itself. What a treasure! Nice hand with the restraint on furnishings. Love the discreet purple dining table (that red wall light looks too small, though, if I may say so). The opening photo of you guys in the living room was so intensely California it stopped me in my tracks; the zen/commune/spare California I personally grew up moving around in, anyway. Nice to see it.
The workbench-table (office?) is awesome; what kind of table is it? It looks antique, I'm guessing, but any helpful hints on tracking down tables in that family?
Beautiful home and beautifully done. Congrats.
Envious! Looks like a good life.
Nice place. Especially like the sheepskin bedspread. Might stitch together one of these babies from IKEA sheepskins one of these days.... Would have appreciated more wide shots in order to get a feel of the flow of the rooms. & Was a little confused about why we needed to see a closeup of a piece of cheese....As for the Best Advice comment--even as food for thought--it is simply wrong. My advice is don't be timid about investing yourself in a place that you love for a long time. House love (like romantic love) is one of life's great experiences. It adds richness & depth to every day. My life wouldn't feel complete without it. So what if they demolish the house after you move out? At least you know that you cherished it & gave it a grand send-off.
Those are some fantastic big embarrassments. Made me laugh!
This is my dream home.
Beautiful place! Perfectly restrained. I envy your editing abilities!
A few things really caught my eye and I’m wondering if you can elaborate:
---The pendant light above the settee... is it papier mache or ceramic?
---Who made the gorgeous bowl on your purple dining table?
---Can you tell us about the artwork in #9?
Also, just wondering about the space adjacent to your kitchen. Finished or a work in progress?
wow - so clutter free - it's peaceful & beautiful.
what's that cool white artichoke thing w/ the hot pink tips on your jewelry desk?
I love your house -- it's so restrained and well thought out! Very very tasteful.
I love Echo Park -- it's improved so much through the years!
I love your fireplace mantle -- so suprised it was a DIY! Source of the wood, please? :)
Very nice! More info on the framed light/art piece in photo #26 please.
I heart your house. Really beautiful. Totally making that linen bedspread! Very inspiring place.
Beautiful, light and airy space - very peaceful!

Well, I've got to fill a few trash bags to donate to the local thrift store! Your place is so serene and clutter free. I'm inspired.
Also I totally agree @mirandajane!
Man, I would kill for the rug in your living room!
Thank you for the nice comments. Here is some of the information requested!
+ The pendant light in the sunroom is ceramic by Stan Bitters, available at http://www.ten10site.com/. They are amazing!
+ The work table is an architect's drafting table. Purchased from Craigslist.
+ The large bowl on the dining room table is by Sunja Park. Similar work available at OK in Los Angeles.
+ The print in image #9 is called "Bruises." I got it a long time ago at TenOverSix in LA.
+ The paper piece on the work table is korean paper latern typically seen at the Lotus Lantern Festival. I made this one myself.
+ The illuminated mirror in the work room is an original Infinity Mirror from 1973. Purchased from a vendor at Pasadena Antiques Center.
+ The bedspread with the tassels handmade in Morroco from Muskelil.
+ The living room rug I bought from my friend Alyssa Valentine.
+ The front door is on the "to replace" list!
+ The empty area in the kitchen is unfinished. Looking for the perfect dining table there.
Thanks again!
Amazing! (say it like Penny on Happy Endings ;)
The purple chairs are my favorite.
I love the rug!! Can you tell me where you got it?
Love the lighting! Great job!
Ok, I love lots of things about this home. The bright pops of colour are so interesting and perfectly placed. I love that it has a clean, crisp feel, but still manages to incorporate some gorgeous knick-knacks and keepsakes. That wall-mounted lamp and that desk (is it marble)? I covet them.
I am so curious as to what the canvas by the bed says. I squinted at my computer screen, but it's just too tiny! Bet it says something really adorable/beautiful/nice.
Lovely photography, too!
CanadianMango and I will have to fight over that area rug in the living room!
Love it!
Gorgeous home, everything is just right. Carrying on the curiousity from Jacqueline with LivSavvy, I too would like to know what the white canvas by the bed says, if it's not too personal to share. Thanks
What a serene, rich home. Beautiful. Loved your wall color, sets off the flooring and vintage pieces perfectly--inspired me to change my color selection for my walls. Also v interesting was that niche shelving- table.
This is absolutely stunning! So calm and restrained without being too minimal. A truly poetic and inspiring home! Thanks for sharing. :)
Elegant. Spare. Room for actual living. A space for the eye to rest and reflect. Not trying too hard for an effect. Ahhhh.
Thank you again for the nice comments!
The piece next to the guest bed says "I have bread and roses." We don't know the artist. It's unsigned!
Your place is so serene with great color against the white walls. I definitely like the windows too.
i really want to know where to get the sheepskin that size or bigger????? I want it for an area rug center of couch / loveseat chair area ,soft on the tootsies! thanks
loved seeing your place.
Sharri1: The sheepskin rug (used as coverlet) was a hand-me-down from my mom who got it a couple of years back from Horchow. I believe they still have them in several colors and sizes too. Good luck!
LOVE PURPLE TABLE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE ALL OF IT:)
What a soothing, calming place to call home. I loved what the owners had to say as much as I loved the tour itself - there was a clear connection between intent and outcome... All of it, just incredibly relaxing, laid back and comforting. Thanks so much for sharing here with us. Beautiful.

Harmony accomplished! Absolutely exquisite space, with beautifully understated accessories. Everything is lovely--from the tilted planter to the purple table, to the bedside vase, it's all quietly dramatic. Top notch.
Beautiful and free feeling. Love the white/light walls and all the art and artful touches. Thought provoking indeed when thinking about attachment, but in the moment it seems to be a lived in and loved home.
Love your home. Got to love alot of these places in Echo Park/Silverlake area of LA. Nicely decorated. All of it actually.
This home is lovely. I'm not crazy about benches as dining room seating, however, I love the purple dining table.
Perfect home! Can you tell me where you found the rug in your and Bradford's photo?
Where can I buy that cute little corner shelf above the bed?
