Name: Kat
Location: Reno, Nevada
When we moved to Reno, Nevada from Oakland, California, I was hoping to purchase an old ramshackle barn and restore it into a rad loft, in the style we were accustomed to living. However, due to our great desire to take advantage of Mr. Obama's phat tax credit for first time home buyers, our selections were limited by time constraints (the tax credit expired at the end of April).
What we ended up with was a typical suburban fixer-upper, in which we infused, and continue to infuse with our loft/salvage style. We own a total of only two pieces of furniture that were purchased new. Everything else is salvaged or inherited, and we like it that way.
Thanks Kat!

White Enamel Flatwa...
holy crap! It's totally not my style, but that yellow sofa is freaking GORGEOUS!
loving the contrast from the yellow sofa to the rug. and the acrylic coffee table doesn't hurt either =)
Love it, I have a fondness for salvage items as well!
I have to ask, were the terrariums salvage items or could I find them somewhere on-line or in store??
Love the rug and the light over the dining table! Also, I've really been wanting one of those felt planters. Did it by any chance come from Flora Grubb in SF?
Beautiful. I think installing some salvaged wood beams would be really striking in the dining area and could lend to your desired loft/farmhouse aesthetic.
Pretty place. I have to mention my confusion about the upside-down coffee mug on the floor....
oh, that coffee table is love and perfect with the sofa! super cute baby too! and i second thebean on the salvaged beams.
love the yellow couch. and the planter thing above the desk - what is that? i would kill for one like that.
I have always loved chalkboard walls, but the empty frames with pictures drawn in make it so finished and family-oriented. I love that room. I would definitely use this look in my own home. VERY well done. Love your home- we need a full house tour!!!
Hi All, thanks for the kind words about my home! You can read more about it including sources on my blog www.designspunk.com.
J'adore! Did you reupholster the sofa, and if so with what sort of fabric? I ask because I see your baby is about the same age as my baby, and I have avoided such pieces due to future toddler-inflicted damage...
Love love love when people salvage furniture and still make their home look so complete and cozy and comfortable. Thanks for sharing!!
Awesome...great vintage style and that sofa is to die for cool! I also love the human element...perfect for families that want to be stylish at the same time! It doesn't all have to be plastic. I would love to see more, more, more!!
This is beautiful! Love the dark hard wood floors to, perfect palette for all the amazingness!
love the coffee table!
Where is that fabulous coffee table from??
Oh, that antique sofa is so gorgeous!
SOFASOFASOFA. <3
This is great! I too would love an old church/warehouse/barn to live in (I grew up in an abandoned convent on church property, so it's imprinted on me).
What I have right now, due to work reasons, is a very suburban split entry. Surprisingly, the white box lended itself extremely well to my industrial/eclectic/vintage style. The plain suburban homes are essentially a blank canvas to make whatever you want...they are often a mismatch of styles so when they are altered to fit the owner's taste, nothing has been desecrated.
Bloom whrere you are planted!
Is that a wooly pocket on the wall?
Please tell us where you got your cute coffee table from!
The table is salvaged from a FANTASTIC salvage store called "Urban Ore" in Berkeley, CA. (It's originally from an old Victoria's Secret display). Many of the terrariums are from a collaboration between and my glass blower. Some are available in my Etsy shop, GreenUnderGlass. Yes, that is a Wooly Pocket on the Wall, available at Wooly Pockets (lovely people)! The sofa is covered in yellow leather and piped with brown leather/edged with brown gimp. It was my Grandmother's originally (as was a lot of my furniture). There's so much more to show and tell!
house tour please! this is LOVELY!! :D
So far in this comment thread I've seen the words cute, fabulous, gorgeous, awesome, beautiful, lovely and "amazingness".
Clearly the pictures I'm seeing - of a nice but normal suburban home - are not the same as the ones everyone else is cooing over.
can you please teach me how to salvage???? tips welcome:)
@ Blandwagon - normal? Not really...
Totally off subject, but isn't it President Obama rather than Mr. Obama? Just sayyinn'....
I am heartbroken that your awesome coffee table is a one-off. I think you've done a fantastic job with working with the white box (dark floors and the chalkboard wall are particularly gorgeous).
I went and read your blog and the terrariums are also GORGEOUS. I keep trying to grow stuff in terrariums and they always die.
PS I was blown away by that blossom lighting pendant the first time I saw it in Nicole's color contest entry, but I think you've made it even better with the addition of the butterflies. Sweet touch.
Kudos. Love the terrarium and the white chair. Nice to see a gorgeous home that did not sacrifice rainforest trees for furniture.
haha upside down coffee mug? I don't get it.
