2-23-housetourlogo.jpg Converting a small house into a chic, modern home was the task Greg met when he first bought this Austin house in 2000. When he married Laura a few years ago, the task officially became a challenge on how to fit two people happily in 720 square feet. Homeowners are sure to find inspiration for their own small homes with Greg and Laura's innovative and ingenious space maximizing ideas that have made this house gorgeous and functional.

082208gregandlaura-03.jpg There are space saving ideas everywhere in this house. In the living room, custom bookshelves flank the comfortable seating area to maximize storage for the couple's books. Greg brilliantly converted an unneeded door into a much-needed open media unit. The bedroom features a large but unimposing closet they built into the room. Sheer curtains help lessen the closet's potentially bulky appearance and clever interior lights were installed for early morning wardrobe searches. Even in the bathroom, empty space over the door is converted into a shelf to hold colorful towels.

Perhaps the best space saving ideas are in the home's small kitchen, which Greg and Laura swear can fit between 6-8 guests. Small, but effective storage improvements have helped make this kitchen functional for two serious foodies: overhead shelving was placed around the room for big pots and pans, custom shelving was placed in existing cabinets to maximize storage space and an old water heater closet was converted to an ultra-useful pantry. A dinner booth is able to accommodate many dinner guests without taking up much space and perfect-sized appliances (like a dishwasher, wine cooler and trashcan) were hunted down to fit into the smallest of dimensions. Our favorite space saving idea: Greg installed a flip-down shelf over the kitchen sink, so that when they are preparing foods, they have a spot to place their cookbook and drink. When they're done preparing food, the shelf flips back up into its locked position flush to the wall!

Along with all their clever space maximizing ideas, also making the home enjoyable is their generous backyard living area, which they've utilized fully. With a casual seating area, outdoor dining area and lovely herb and vegetable garden, it's easy to see why Greg and Laura often leave their backdoor open, extending their house into their yard. Our favorite part of their outdoor retreat: Greg's ingenious handmade fountain to help disguise traffic noise.

AT Survey:

Our style: Functionality that supports a good vibe. For instance: no tables that require a coaster; wine on the furniture, no problem!

Favorite Room: First place: our patio and backyard. Second place: the kitchen.

Inspiration: A problem that needs to be solved.

Favorite Element: Our eating space/kitchen table. Its cozy but we've actually had a seven person christmas dinner around that table. The fact that it's built from a butcher block also allows us to serve/cut bread, pizza, cheese, salumi etc right on the table- the more knife marks the better.

Biggest Challenge: Converting a small house (720 sq feet) that was purchased for 1 person into a functional space for 2.

082208gregandlaura-04.jpg Most Talked about Element: Folks dig the kitchen, patio, fountain, and garden area pretty much equally.

Biggest Embarrassment: I thought this was about the house.

Proudest DIY: Probably the patio structure and the kitchen space. We're also proud of the vegetable garden and the landscaping as well.

Oldest Item you Own: We have a jar of relish in the fridge that I believe is a grandmother.

Best advice: A dimmer switch on *every* overhead light (bathroom and patio included).

Cleaning or Organizing Tip: Know when to utilize open space and keep space open.

Dream Piece of Furniture: King size bed.

Favorite Store: Hardware.

Place You Buy Things for the Home: Farmers market.

Biggest Indulgence: Our screen doors (by Austin artist Susan Wallace).

The floating bookcases in the living room and the open shelving in the kitchen and office are definitely hits - and they're not overstuffed which is great. I especially like the clever flip-down ledge under the kitchen window.

The back yard is very nice too - what a great little vegetable garden, and the water feature & handmade tables are really very nice - but they're let down by the green plastic chairs.

The closet in the bedroom is a letdown tho - it just looks sloppy with the curtains and all the stuff on top - I wish it had simple hinged and/or sliding doors to keep it looking neat. The tall dressers on either side of the bed really ought to be lower 3-drawer dressers too - would make the room feel much more spacious and allow for bedside lamps, etc.

That Rolly End table is much too small and pushed back for that sofa in the living room too - it would be better next to one of the chairs and a taller/deeper end table should be next to the sofa with a more substantial lamp.

Oh - and the puppy is adorable.

1 for the yellow labbie. also 1 for the converted door storage. If I were you, my next project would be refinishing the kitchen cabinets (and putting those spices in a cupboard so the sunlight doesn't spoil them!!).

otherwise, great looking house!

Is that a Lane coffee table? Are you sure it doesn't need coasters?

I really like this house. Comfortable and with a good vibe. The floating bookshelves look great. May I ask...where is the media/tv cabinet from? Very cool...

This is a great house and there are a lot of space maximizing ideas, but the writer of this piece is confusing "maximizing" and "saving" throughout the text of the post. Maximizing the space is getting the most out of what you have. Saving is using less of the space. The space in this place is used well, sure enough, but few of the ideas are space saving.

I envy all the built-in solutions and wish I could implement some of them, but being a renter and having weak wall structures, I can only admire from afar.

I think this is the best hometour on AT. I'm moving in!

Hey, your livingroom rug is what I have been looking for. Where did you find it? The colors are more muted than most of the ones I have seen.

Congratulations on making a fantastic environment for you, your friends and your adorable dog!

I envy the vegetable garden! FANTASTIC!

Overall this is a very charming home! It looks very inviting. I too have a lot of "stuff" and I find myslef buying lots of storage things to hide things....for instance the towels and dish rags in the kitchen. I too would like to see maybe some sliding doors put on the closet and get rid of the curtain and curtain rod.

What fantastic furniture!!!!

Love the home, and the living room especially! Does anyone know where I could find a similar couch? The shape and color are exactly what I've been looking for!

Love the gorgeous hardwood floors - I love the wallcolor in the living room even more. And have to have it! If you don't mind sharing, what is the shade of paint/brand?

Just enough color but still super bright and airy looking.

Your house looks almost identical to our 1st house that we just bought on the East Side. We bought off 5th and Pedernales. Where is your bungalow located? You have done a wonderful job with the place....my husband especially loves your Sierra Nevada sign! :)

I echo many of the previous comments! The rug is also what I've been looking for! The back yard is perfect- space for sitting, veggies, eating, and admiring!

I really liked this house tour.

The only criticism is that I would like some chocolate or some thicker fabric on the closet. Sliding doors not necessary, just something that hides it a little better.

nice home! is that the rochelle sofa from crate and barrel? i had my eyes on it after seeing it on the cover of domino - sadly there isn't a crate and barrel in canada (one opening soon though) and the sofa has since been discontinued. but it looks great in your space! lucky you.

Lovely space and I enjoyed seeing what you've done with your smaller space. Very well thought out.

I'll echo the comments on the living room rug. I've been looking for unique rugs for my new home but haven't been successful. Anyone have ideas on where to look?

it is definitely a lovely and well lived in space but i agree that space maximizing might not be the best term in some ways.

shelves shelves and more shelves seem to be the solution and all the openness of it is a bit distracting a messy looking at times. i'd probably want to put doors or screens or something on at least half of them. otherwise it's really a great home.

Comfy home where food is a big priority wins many points! my only suggestion would be to maybe hang the curtains hiding the closets right from the ceiling. That would also hide the suitcases, etc. being stored above the closet...a more seamless look.

Very nice. I was wondering where you guys got the metal wine rack shelf? I have the exact same shelving unit, but only with flat layers. A layer like yours fit for wine bottles would be really helpful.

Thanks!

Green resin chairs are not only comfortable but a beautiful design; save the world can also happen when we use the plastic that someone else already left on the planet.

Having the curtain hang from the ceiling does sound lovely - unless that's a tv on the top that you actually watch?

Your banquette is wonderfully compact and having the shelves above it really makes it feel like a cozy nook; I can see several people snuggled up on it.

Hey everyone! I had spoken with Greg the homeowner a few days ago and got some answers for the questions you guys have asked...

illegal danish-- it's is a lane coffee table! Good eye! They bought it already a little banged up so they don't mind having a few more glass rings on it!

vjm- Laura bought that rug from IKEA years ago, I did some ebay searches for it, but haven't found any, and it doesn't seem to be on the website anymore :(

K*10 - It's a Crate and Barrel sofa, and Greg is going to get me the specifics to give to you to help you find it for your home! He did mention it was a special order fabric.

Thanks for posting - I love it!
great mid cent pieces mixed very smartly mixed with contemporaries like the sofa. the colors are great, nice blues & greens -keeping the colors on the cool side creates a soothing and spatious feel- smart in a small place - nice poster choices - the pink and red give just the right splash of color. Love the built in bookcase and the floating ones. Your home is so inviting and warm too - I feel like I'm looking at a first home of two phd students. Smart, comfortable, intelligent, sophisticated but not pretentious. Striving for this in my own home. Love it!
