Finding Seonna's hillside Mt. Washington home was an adventure in itself, with more twists and turns than a spy thriller novel. Clinging to a dramatic hillside, the post and beam residence expresses its pedigree with a variety of original midcentury architectural details, all complimenting its most impressive feature: an expansive hillside view of Pasadena and the Angeles Forest. The home is comfortably decorated with both modern and vintage pieces, warmly accentuated by the obvious presence of Seonna's daughter's playthings and artwork (we love her doorway sign to please "nock" before entering). Additional art from various artist friends give each wall not only visual interest, but colourfully highlight the home and our hostesses' friendly character..

AT Survey:

My/Our style: Modern toy box

Inspiration: Art and my daughter

Favorite Element: I fell in love with the view.

Biggest Challenge: There is very little storage (except in my large creepy basement).

111408seonnatour04.jpgWhat Friends Say: They want to live in my daughter's room.

Biggest Embarrassment: My clothes storage challenges belie my penchant for clothing and retail therapy more than the afore mentioned issues of physical space.

Proudest DIY: This isn't as much a project per se, but my proudest DIY moment was when I got my first power drill.

Biggest Indulgence: My home is on a hillside and the stairs to the backyard and the backyard itself are a little precarious.  My daughter loves playing down there and so I put in a fence so she wouldn't tumble down the hill.  While it absolutely serves it's purpose, it is also reaaaaaally pretty and it impacted my choice (and the pocketbook).  This is also how I go grocery shopping btw.

Best advice: To work within my means.

Dream source: Mr. Pink in NYC: Sadly they've closed but they had the most amazing collection of vintage housewares and small furniture.  Tinlark gallery in L.A.: Cris McCall has an amazing eye and I have collected many of the treasures in my home from her gallery.

Resources:

Appliances: The kitchen was already done when I moved in. All I added was the stainless penny round backsplash.

Furniture: Rose Bowl Swap Meet, DWR, the super-amazing-crazy-deal-gettin' Modernica sales, Modern Seed, IKEA...

Appliances: I'm lucky.  A lot of the original appliances, lighting, and hardware were in my home when I moved in.

Accessories: Mr. Pink, my talented friends, my daughter's school projects

Lighting: Mr. Pink, DWR...

111408seonnatour03.jpgRugs and Carpets: Anthropologie, IKEA

Beds: Modernica, IKEA

Artwork: Tinlark, my friends and my daughter.

Paint: Classic Color in South Pasadena.  They carry low VOC paints and their knowledgeable and friendly staff can custom mix colors.

Flooring: The bamboo flooring was in when I moved in!

(Thanks, Seonna!)

I'm looking for a bench exactly like the one pictured in your entryway in pics 3 & 4. Where did you get it?

Love the turquoise door! Thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous home! May I ask how old your daughter is? I think I'd like to move my son into a loft-style bed to open up space.

Question: What is the black and white print in your entry way? (The one with the two white blocks).

It is really stunning and I want to know if it was done by one of your friends or if there was a possibility that I might get a copy.

PS. Your Murakami in the bedroom is cute.

So beautiful! You should have entered the color contest!

How do you find the quality of the Urban Outfitters side tables by your sofa? I've been considering buying one of those, but I'm wary about the quality of their furniture.

I really like this cheerful home. It reminds me that, although there is some chatter about mid-century furniture having become ubiquitous or cliche, we can be grateful that these are perhaps new classics that bring charm and good design to many homes. I can't get enough of the George Nelson lamps, mostly because they give terrific glows to a room! Danish furniture is simple, attractive, and allows personal objects which fill them to shine.

Hi! Thanks for all the lovely compliments.
The prints above the China cabinet and my daughter's bed were done by living legend, David Weidman in the 1950s and 60s. He's a true inspiration. You can find prints and posters here: http://www.weidmansart.com/index.html.
Not sure about the Eiffel chairs... I looked on Modernica's site and neither Chiffon or Celery looked like the yellow that my chairs are. I can describe them though as a very lemony yellow.
The horses in my entryway were done by the amazing artist, Ann Wood: http://annwood.net/blog/category/horses/. She also creates magic with pirate ships, birds and the like.
The Urban Outfitters side tables are fine... but I've had issues of wobbliness with some of their other stuff... but that may have had more to do with my poor assembling abilities...
And the black and white piece of artwork is a map that one of my favorite artists, Ed Ruscha drew... it's a long funny story, but it ends with me receiving the map at the end of the day, immediately going to get it framed and treasuring

What fun! Proves that 1) you can have a beautiful home and actually live in it, 2) DIY is not tacky by definition. Well done.

wow! i've actually been a fan of seonna hong for awhile now, ever since her work caught my eye in a magazine a few years ago. her house captures the spirit of her work so well -- cute, feminine without being too girly, humorous, modern. at least, that's the way i see it.

someone please ban ally stone now.

Love your house, this is one of my favorite house tours ever!

The first picture blew me away, I have been searching high and low for the perfect sideboard/hutch combination for my MCM dining room. You have it! I'm sure it's vintage, but where did you get it? And do you know the maker or name of the line? Thanks so much!

Ignore the haters, who wants to live in a Crate and Barrel catalog?

This place looks like fun--midcentury works really well with kids and we are transitioning over to it...(now I could scream at some of my old pieces that I got rid of years ago--cast offs from my inlaws)...anyway, I feel a sudden uncontrollable urge to run out and buy 8 Eiffel chairs....can't decide on which colour though....

Very fun house you are very creative. I am sad by the painted ceiling though. Maybe it was done before you moved in.

Those beams and planks are harder and harder to come by and for those who are mid-century buffs they are truely iconic. Painted though they lose all their character and charm.

I don't feel the same about painting the wood walls, usually, as is the case here, it is an improvement.

I don't know how I missed this when it was first posted, but I'm glad to see it now (AT's year-end retrospectives do serve a purpose!).

I think Palmetto's comment above sums up my feelings: I like this as it's a welcome departure from the MCM places that feel like time-warp museums.

This looks like a marriage between house and human rather than an enforced occupation by the latter -- she respects and delights in the house's architectural heritage; the house reciprocates by providing a perfect backdrop to her contemporary take on its mid-century aesthetic. The result is... love! And a genuine, liveable home as opposed to a Disney-esque timewarp into MCM Fantasyland.

I especially love the exposed wood in the bedroom, the loads of playful, original art, and the fusion of affordable furniture with high-end designer pieces. Kudos all around. Now, when can I visit?
