new_housetour08.jpgWhen we found the photos of Los Angeles photographer Sharon Montrose, we knew we had to pester her for a house tour. Her photographic series of puppy photos of her canine pal, Squeak, hosting a mini-house tour promised of an interior as friendly, warm and inviting as her cute four legged friend, and we were not disappointed when she followed up with a bunch more photos of the home she shares with her husband and dogs. So come on in, take a tour of Sharon and Spencer's Los Angeles pad below...

AT Survey:

My/Our style: Clean, but not cold with a mix of Mid Century and Danish furnishings.

Inspiration: The Inspiration for my home: Is the idea of “home” I have in my mind from my childhood home. I also draw inspiration from all the creative people around me–both actual and virtual.

Favorite Element: Our dogs! I can’t imagine home without dogs.

Biggest Challenge: Having the patience to not rush and knowing it is always a work in progress.

What Friends Say: That it’s comfortable and inviting.

Biggest Embarrassment: Ugh, there’s a few closets I’d be horrified for guests to see, and, well, the garage is kind of a mess too.

Proudest DIY: My husband and I demoed and rebuilt the kitchen

Biggest Indulgence: Oooh, that’s a toss up between the kitchen sink and plumbing fixtures and the Saarinen Tulip Table and chairs in the breakfast nook. Oh, if I’m being honest, I guess a stand alone Ice Machine should be considered an indulgence too!

Best advice: Trying to save money can end up costing money in the long run. Do it right the first time..

>> Enter Slideshow

Resources:

Appliances: GE Refrigerator, KitchenAid Architect Series Ice Machine, Maytag Neptune Washer & Dryer, vintage Wedgewood Stove (restored at Antique Stove Heaven).

Furniture: Much of our furniture is vintage Danish purchased from primarily Grot in Redondo Beach (Hi Gavin!), we also have pieces from Floor Model, and Denmark 50. Our dining room table is a Mobler piece we bought off the floor at Skandia Design (RIP). Our two sofas and cowhide ottoman are designed and manufactured by Cisco Brothers. We have an Eames plywood lounge chair, and the aforementioned Saarinen Tulip Table and chairs, both purchased from Hive Modern. In our bedroom we have a side bench made by Mitchell Gold, and our headboard is the Fairfax model from Williams Sonoma Home. For our office we have a mix: Mirra Standard Office Chairs; a refinished McDowell & Craig Tanker Desk, Eames Storage Unit, Hold Everything (RIP) Sectional desk and file cabinets.

Accessories: Where to start? Etsy, Etsy, Etsy…. And, vintage and contemporary Danish Pottery, random eBay finds, books, and odds and ends we have both collected over the years.

Hardware: Franke PSX-110-30-12 Kitchen Sink, Dornbracht Meta Series Faucet, Waterstone Freshwater Spout, Ikea cabinet and drawer pulls, a mix of Rejuvenation and vintage door hardware, Classic Accents push button light switches, Rejuvenation Rotary Doorbell.

Lighting: Our goal, with few exceptions, was to have the majority of lighting, electrical, and plumbing fixtures match the period of our home (1928 French Normandie). To those ends, we purchased nearly every lighting fixture and plate cover at Rejuvenation in Oregon. Our dining room pendant and sconces are the Mauritius line by Via Motif. And we hung a Le Klint Pendant in our breakfast nook (not so much 20’s, but we think it works and we just had to have it).

Window Treatments: Our textile window treatments were custom designed and manufactured by Sol Window Coverings. We also have a few window coverings by Smith & Noble.

Beds: Simmons Beauty Rest (this probably should have gone in the Indulgence category).

Paint: Mostly Dunn Edwards Low Sheen.

Flooring: Vintage white oak we refinishing to a dark brown. We completed our kitchen with Armstrong commercial vinyl flooring.

Rugs and Carpets: Flor, Flor, Flor. We had had tufted wool rugs throughout the house, but they shed ceaselessly for three years, so we officially became huge advocates of Flor. The only rug that isn’t floor is a shag remnant we have in our bedroom.

Tiles and Stone: Our kitchen countertop and backsplash is white carrera marble. The floor of our master bath is 1.5 inch hexagonal black tiles. The rest of the bathroom tile is original to the house (1928).

Artwork: Etsy sellers, vintage dog food advertisements, photos that me or my husband have taken, funky drawings, and some additional photos by family and friends or anything we find that makes us happy to look at.

(Thanks, Sharon & Spencer...and Squeak!)

The house is loveley, everything is in its place, a virtually perfect home.
I like some of the photographs as such as well.

However, everything is SO perfect, so in its place, thats I'd feel uneasy. I'd ask several if I'm allowed to before sitting on one of the chairs. I guess this is just a "show" aspect for the photographs, but the pictures make evrything look really formal.

That explains how everything is so tidy!

It's a beautiful house. I especially like the pairs of object (sheep and four, salt and peppers, photo series above credenza, etc.), which nicely flout the rule of odd numbers of objects. Kind of refreshing!

oh, and to 'Daniel Poitiers' who said "I guess this is just a "show" aspect for the photographs, but the pictures make everything look really formal" - would you expect anything else but divine, photos from someone who is obviously an extremely talented photographer?...
it drives me crazy when people say a house on 'AT' is too 'neat', 'doesn't look lived in' and 'looks staged for the photos' - if you were going to put photos of your home on the internet for all to see (and to be judged - especially on this site!) wouldn't you make sure it was tidy, organised, looking its best and showing off its greatest features!
We come here to see amazing and innovative design from talented people - and why should we expect anything less than that when they submit their fab photos...
chill and enjoy...

It's a superb interior - I expecially like the contrast between the industrial-style vinyl floor and the luxe marble counters in the kitchen. I also like the fact that its embraces its architectural features rather than trying to make them conform to the latest idea of what's "hot".

However I agree with Daniel Poiters that it may be a little too stark and "designed" for day to day comfort. Still, some people enjoy living that way.

Hi Everyone and thanks for your comments! It was a pleasure to be featured on AT/LA.

PhillyLass: The office paint color is Dunn Edwards Patina Creek, Low Sheen.

elizgonz: Yes Kettlebells! Both Sharon and I began training KB about six months ago and haven't looked back! Check out
KBLA
and fellow AT/LA reader's site
Train Hardstyle
.

paintitbright: Thank you!

sagesse: Thanks. We were able to salvage a majority of the bathroom tile on the walls. The shower up to more than halfway wasn't so lucky though. We found a color that mostly matches, but contemporary tiles don't have the charm and variation of circa 1920's tiles. We also weren't lucky with the floor–the original floor design and tiles were amazing but unfortunately, unsalvageable. We ended up installing the 1.5" black hex tiles right on top of the old floor.

pyrexman: The kitchen floor is Armstrong Imperial Texture 1/8". Our colors are
Classic Black
and
Lemon Yellow

CandyK: The Wall Sconces and Pendant in the dining room are the Mauritius collection by
Via Motif
Also, CandyK, thank you!

jz: see above for info about the Armstrong Tile and the paint in the breakfast nook is Dunn Edwards Creamy Corn, Low Sheen. The living room is DE Ball of String, Low Sheen. The dining room is DE Northgate Green, Low Sheen.

Manuchao: We love the look and feel of the Armstrong Vinyl flooring. Though, I will say this, it is vital to get it professionally waxed and polished at least a couple times a year–I'd say four times. As for installation, we were rushing to install the cabinets ourselves, so we hired someone to install it and they totally botched the job by not prepping the sub floor properly. If you really look at it, you can see imperfections and bumps (probably only bothers my wife and I because we know it's there). That said, I watched the guy install it, and if I did it again, I would definitely do it myself. If you can cut straight lines and work with adhesives, should be relatively simple.

Hope we've covered all the questions here. Thanks again, Spencer, Sharon, Squeak, Simon, Avery (woof).

Manuchao: I've installed the Armstrong VCT twice now in a bathroom and a kitchen and it is easy. Read the installation instructions on the armstrong site, but the process is simple: 1) Lay smooth flat subfoor (any ridges or bumps will eventually show through so don't install it right over an old vinyl sheet floor with an embossed pattern)
2) Use a 1/32 notched trowel to lay down a thin and even coat of the adhesive (it's water based and easy to work with when wet)
3) Let the adhesive dry until tacky (important, it will take a few hours)
4) Place tiles (Use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat tiles that need to be cut and use a craft knife or even scissors to cut the tile. The tiles are actually very brittle when not heated, but easy to cut, even curves, when warmed up.)

They come with a dull factory wax coating that needs to be stripped and new wax applied and buffed a minimum 1-2 times a year.

p.s. if / when you move or sell, try to ensure that whoever takes on the vinyl flooring will recycle it -- armstrong will take it back and pay for shipping.

Glad you're feeling better! Thanks so much for your kind comments.

As for the guest bathroom green/blue/birds wallpaper, it came with the home, so we have no way of knowing just what it is or from whence it came. We do love it, and opted to keep it.

And the baby deer photo you mentioned as your favorite–is a
Print
from Sharon's Etsy Shop.

When I posted the above info about the Armstrong tile, I did notice their return/recycle policy. Flor has a similar program to recycle Flor tiles into new carpet–postage paid. Great to see companies greening up.

Now, do tell! On the shelf to the left of the vintage camera ad, there seems to be a framed 'homage' to dogs (poem and scruffy dog image) - at least that's I can gather from squinting my eyes to see the piece.
