Name: Laura Tabor
Location: West End; Glasgow, Scotland
Size: 2,500 square feet
Years lived in: 5 years; Owned
Laura, a jewelry designer, lives in this beautiful duplex apartment in a converted Victorian townhouse with her husband, Tom (a surgeon) and their little girl Milly (3). Their home is full of life, color and personality, with glorious high ceilings that allow the space to breathe. The original features, so beautifully restored, are striking when celebrated next to modern design and clean lines. Primarily, it is a real family space, with expressions of little Milly - who is certainly not little in the character stakes - as freely displayed as the expressions of her parents. A fantastic place to work, play and rest in equal measure.
Besides the beautiful jewelry she creates in her home studio, Laura's other great love is baking. Somehow she manages to blend the two seamlessly together with an overflow all over their home. She's even penned a book on jewelry-inspired baking. With her collections of cake tins displayed on the walls, and every corner of the home embellished with decorative metals and jewel tones, she pays attention to the small details, and it pays off.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: A miss match of old and new, neutrals and pastel colours.
Inspiration: We love American New England style homes and interiors, but they don’t work that well here so we manage little elements of Americana where we can.
Favorite Element: The height of the ceilings and original period features are a thing of constant joy for us, the light that floods in on beautiful mornings or evenings is just glorious.
Biggest Challenge: Storage is a problem and an ongoing one. As was redesigning the bathroom and sourcing a handsome corner bath.
What Friends Say: It is a space that is difficult to leave - could be the surroundings or perhaps the constant ritual of making tea and cakes.
Biggest Embarrassment: The copious amounts of stuff, especially craft equipment and toys.
Proudest DIY: Tom’s marvelous wine storage in the fireplace, made with a surgeon’s precision.
Biggest Indulgence: Fresh flowers, always. My mother is a florist and I grew up surrounded by fresh flowers and the house is just not right without them.
Best Advice: Be Happy, smile, take stock, make stock, livelong and prosper.
