Shelby Brakken is one of the leading lifestyle and portrait photographers in Portland, Oregon. Today we are lucky enough to learn a little about how she approaches one of the toughest subjects out there: photographing kids! Here's what Shelby has to say . . .
As the largest retailer in the world, IKEA has stores in 38 countries around the globe. In an interesting new study, Idealo UK performed a cost comparison to determine the cheapest and most expensive places to buy from the big blue box. Check out some of their findings after the jump…
At some point in time, most of us have gone on a diet or two. Want to lose 5 pounds before your high school reunion? Cut the carbs. Feeling overwhelmed by social media? Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. Since there are countless books and blogs out there teaching us how to cut back and reorganize our lives, I wasn't totally surprised to hear about something called the 5 Ring Diet. But when I found out the specifics of how it works and the cause behind the effort, I was instantly hooked.
As a decidedly pragmatic personality I would like to point out to you that, with this second weekend of August, summer is casually drawing to a close. Before it's time to settle into our autumn routines, we should take this chance to enjoy the last gasps of summer. From outdoor events like Chicago's Vintage Bazaar to Portland's Wave of Light event, there are plenty of one off sales and events to enjoy this weekend. Check it all out in the Weekend Guide, pass it on and send us your own sale or event.
The trap of a staycation is that you are at home and can easily get stuck in your regular routine. Vacationing in your hometown can be fun and relaxing, if you can just get a different perspective. Try getting outside and getting wet, and explore your city from the water.

I'm very excited to share the outdoor space of Portland gardener Loree Bohl! I stumbled upon her blog, Danger Garden, a couple years back, and have been hooked ever since. I love watching her chronicle her expanding green space and taking us on virtual tours of other likeminded gardeners. I tend to use adjectives like cute, adorable, and cuddly when I share her space with others. Thank goodness my husband is unfazed and usually jumps in the passenger seat when I 'drive' to the site.
My husband and I had been toying with a trip to Portland, Oregon later this summer but, alas, it's not in the cards. So the next best thing (as far as a Shopping Editor is concerned) is shopping for Portland products! These are a few of my favorites products from or featuring Stumptown.
A friend of my recently said something like, "there ought to be a word like 'patriotism', but for cities. I'm proud to be from London, not England" — but he said it way better and more "Britishy", of course. With the 4th of July fast approaching, it seems like the perfect time to celebrate our civic pride, our city love.
