I call Max’s new room Mix n’ Modern because although it is quite modern, I love to mix that up with a little vintage, a little handmade, and a little quirky. I want both of us to love it, and think I achieved that with this recent upgrade.

I gave him our old Malm bed, but painted it. I made him an enormous chalkboard since he loves art. I filled it with books that he loves to read (in colors I love) and a vintage desk that got a makeover as well. The wool blanket on his bed is Faribault (in collaboration with Target, so it was a more affordable option), which adds a little campy and tones down the modern.

The sheets and figures are all Max’s and keep the room feeling lived in, playful and fun for him. The room is incredibly small, so I purchased a really tall/skinny dresser from IKEA and fit everything in his closet, leaving the rest of the room as open as possible.

The bed is Malm from IKEA, I painted a very light gray. The school desk is vintage I purchased for a steal from Craigslist and painted the base white. The giant chalkboard is an old canvas I had saved, I painted it with black chalkboard paint and then made a wood frame it out of cedar. My husband made the bookshelf, he is just learning to weld and this was his first project. The wood shelves were cut to fit. The Batman decals are from Urban Walls. The wool blanket on his bed is Faribault for Target. The framed photo of legos is an image I took of Max’s actual Legos, printed at Walgreens and framed in an IKEA frame.
