Name: Monica Schafer
Location: The Plaza — Kansas City, Missouri
Size: 650 square feet
Years lived in: 3.5 — owned
Tucked out of the way amidst some serious hustle and bustle resides this lovely and luxurious apartment in Kansas City. Located in the neighborhood called The Plaza, it boasts some serious Art Deco era design, complete with extra skinny hallways and round windows. Monica has done a marvelous job of echoing this vibe throughout her decor and in addition, many of her belongings were handmade or embellished to perfect the look without a tell-tale of her crafty ways — Martha Stewart would be proud!
When I first started my trek up the stairs to Monica's awesome apartment I had no idea how most of the furniture that I had seen in our exchanged emails could possibly make it up the stairs. The building itself had so much character but so little space. Once in her home the sense of cramped quarters that the stairway had previously imposed vanished with her sparkly style and clean floor plan.
This home is a bit sultry with bright with pops of color and an occasional hidden metallic element to catch you off guard. Many of the pieces in Monica's home have been slightly altered to give her a truly custom look and feel. For instance, her coffee table is two traditional LACK tables from IKEA, but with custom cut glass tops they become a whole new animal. From adding upholstery tacks to the sofa, to raising the height (and changing the color) of her dining room table, she's pretty much done it all.
So pull up a seat, pour yourself a drink and take a look at this modern twist on a Hollywood Regency home smack dab in the middle of the Midwest.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Hollywood Regency & Art Deco with a splash of Mid-Century Modern Glam
Inspiration: Kelly Wearstler, Elle Decor, botique hotels, Dwell, Preston Lee
Favorite Element: Bedroom Curtains. I found the ombre satin at a fabric store in South Dakota before I even purchased the condo. I fell in love with the smokey gray and burgundy plum heavy satin and bought the entire bolt. At the time I didn't have any walls worthy of the super luxe fabric, but I envisioned it draped from floor to ceiling covering a bedroom wall. The fabric was actually the catalyst for my home search. I didn't need a place to hang my hat; I needed a place to hang my curtains! (And not have to take them down 12 months later...) I travel a lot for work and play which equates many, many hotel stays. W Hotels are most always inspiring and was the design inspiration for my "hotel chic" bedroom and curtains. That said, the "Wild Horses" painting was a valentine from my boyfriend and my most favorite piece of art. It's an original by Nieth Nevelson.
Biggest Challenge: I had the red couch and I had to make it work. It's a modern style microfiber mammoth that I had to figure out how to make work and make look less modern (since I couldn't make it less red, dang it.) There was the added challenge too of getting it up three tight flights of stairs (no freight elevator) and into the space. I started with the red couch in the living room and worked nearly everything else around it from the color of the wall color, to the artwork and furniture. To help make it look less modern, I added the upholstery tacks by hand on the front of the arms and along the back along the spine. This was a GREAT and easy DIY that changed the look for around $30.00.
What Friends Say: It's a cool style that is very me. The mirrors are usually a hit. They help add dimension to the small space while creating an interesting, graphic composition on the wall.
Biggest Embarrassment: Headboard. An upholsterer who I had not used before made it though it did not turn out as desired. (Just don't look too close!) I would like to disassemble and DIY it using some crown molding around the edges and upholstery tacks.
Proudest DIY: I've DIYed some part of nearly every piece of furniture and element in the space and have been happy with the end result of most all of them. I love the wall of mirrors, curtains, record cabinet and dresser.
Biggest Indulgence: Lighting throughout. The boy and girl lamps in the bedroom & chandelier.
Best Advice: Be patient and resourceful.

LIVING ROOM
- • Red Couch: Famous Barr Dept. store and retrofitted with upholstery tacks
• Round Table: Revival Home Furnishings in Overland Park, KS. The table top of this piece was mustard yellow and sat too low. I had it painted with a durable auto paint and built up a couple of inches to make it a standard sitting table height.
• Sitting Chairs: Revival Home Furnishings, Overland Park, KS. I searched for two years for the perfect chairs and in a stroke of serendipitous luck found exactly what I was hoping for. They were royal blue velvet and in excellent condition. I bought the fabric at MOOD in NYC and had Revival reupholster them as well.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I love it!
The bedroom curtains are gorgeous.
I admire that you like a style and really went with it.
I love the plate with the woman winking over your kitchen sink - such fun and playful touch! I also love the color you used on the walls. What's the brand/color name?
Planter by the door in the first picture - with faces! Where to find, where to find?
Great place.
very nice! way to be from the midwest too:)
I like the wall o' mirrors and all the Hollywood glam touches. It really captures that old Hollywood feel.
Those coasters with the stand in photo #11 must've been popular back in the day! I have the exact same set on my coffee table that I purchased at a yard sale about 10 years ago. I love them and they go with just about any style. That's the first time I've ever seen anyone else with them.
Excellent stuff. Love the stereo, and yay to Yeasayer and MGMT.
Id love to know the color in the kitchen also! I noticed the coasters too. I see them at yard sales often.
Wonderful place!!
I'm thinking I got a set of those coasters as a wedding gift 20 years ago, so not soooo old, are they?
I love the fact you got a place to match your curtains. That is amazing fabric. Too much cool stuff to mention, but the compass light fixture is my favorite.
wow the dresser in your bedroom is so awesome!!! what a great find!
pmaher - I saw that planter on sale at Z Gallerie the other day. They had a size much bigger than this one for $25!
Absolutely gorgeous! I just wish the photographer knew how to handle photographing shiny things better. Half of the photos are out of focus. It's a real disservice to the beautiful home.
AHH!! I live on the Plaza too!! KC Represent! :D
Yay Kansas City! I used to live on the plaza and my space looked nothing like this elegant and creative home. Still live in the area and love seeing our town represented!
There are certain elements of this place that I absolutely love but for the most part, I find this style gaudy.
*Love* the North/South/East/West light cover...is this something she made, or can we buy one just like it?
I love this style. what a gorgeous home you have!

Monica has some of the best taste in KC! Props Monica!
Monica has beautiful style, just love it all! I do wish their were some more larger-framed photos so I could see it altogether.
Wow! I love your apartment ,amazing style .
Lovely! You may have single-handedly changed my "style." Before viewing this house tour, I might have dismissed Hollywood as "not my style" but now I want to see more.
LOVE the wallpaper in the bathroom and your Tiffany blue kitchen.
Thanks for the fun comments everyone! Here's some answers and more resources:
*The paint in the kitchen is Sherwin Williams in "Slow Green."
*The vase with faces is called a "Dora Maar." I originally saw it online but then stumbled upon it at TJMaxx! Jonathan Adler makes a killer version too if you wanted to splurge.
*The coasters: I have no idea where they came from! I've had them for probably ten years and I think my mom must have donated them to me :)
*The NSEW light fixture used to hang in my grandparents farm house. It had an additional piece to it which was a clear glass ship steering wheel that I removed. I have seen one other just like it at a vintage store so keep your eyes out. You may get lucky!
Cheers from KC~
FAB-U-LOUS!!!!
Wow. This is absolutely amazing! I've gotten so many ideas from looking at this! The furniture is amazing!
The painting of the horses=amazing!
Absolutely lovely! Full of personality without being cluttered or crowded - seems much larger than 650 sq. ft.
I have those same two peacocks! Do you know anything about where they came from? I spray painted mine white too!
I like the combination of exuberance and discipline within these interiors, held in perfect balance.
The babyhead lamps, the varicoloured bedroom curtain and the bathroom wallpaper are especially good.
Absolutely gorgeous!! I LOVE your style! The bedroom is so luxurious feeling especially for such a small space, and I used to have an obsession for old Marilyn photos! It looks like you have put an extraordinary amount of time and energy into your home, kudos!
Oh, so much personality, and so much inspiration! I adore the kitchen...and may I ask where that hallway plafonniere with the map and the compass points comes from?
This is so ridiculously LA glam, it almost hurts... But somehow, I really like it. A tip of the hat to you, mad'dam!
Absolutely love this!
Monica and Ava,
I have one of the peacocks as well! (Not the one sitting on the rock - the other one). I found it a local Value Village a few months back and my original intention was to spray paint it to fit into an existing vignette in my home. But I kinda liked the old coppery colour so I haven't touched it yet. Dang, now I am really sorry I did not buy the other one, too! At that time, I did not like the other one that much but I should have gotten it, it's a pair after all.
I love the wallpaper in the bathroom. Source?
It looks much bigger than 650 sq. ft. Thumbs up on the lovely drapes in the bedroom.
The only thing that disturbs me is the Dora Maar planter - for some reason, I don't like faces on things (although I do like Fornasetti plates - go figure). :-)
What a great place! I can just imagine friends and family coming over to visit and wandering about to take it all in. This home is so warm and inviting, showcasing the homeowner's personality. Well done!
YESSSSS!!!!! This is by far my favorite house tour in a very very long time! I love the creativity, the style, the attention to detail, the theme... all of it. This home tells me she is a very creative interesting person who I would die to become friends with. I love spaces that do this! Perfect.
Oh I'm SOOO disappointed that the NSEW light is a vintage piece. I mean, I love that it's one of a kind but I just wish it was MY one of a kind light.
This is not usually my style of decor, but I love your place!
Meh......this article doesn't give a sense of the space. It seems like an advertisement for an estate sale; the individual items are highlighted rather than the space itself. Color me disappointed.
CanadianManga & Ava-
The peacocks are Syroco pieces out of Syracuse circa 1965. They're fairly prolific and you should be able to find them with a quick google search. I passed them up once and then found them months later on ebay.
Monica
Beautiful!!!!
It is, without a doubt, impeccably decorated. While lovely, it's slightly lacking in personality for my taste. Not unlike a hotel suite. Too themed to garner my love.
Loved it, and felt like I really got a sense of your style by looking at the photos.
Love your whole fun, gorgeous place, but my absolute favorite thing is that DOOR. Sets the perfect tone for what you see after you walk inside. Did you paint it that way, or is the molding on the door dimensional (carved) in the circular shape?
Fabulous! Very creative esp with minimal space. Way to go
Love the kitchen. A lovely home.
Lovely, Lovely! Distinctive style shows thought and care. I, too, can understand finding fabric to love and shaping an entire room around it. As a Manhattanite, I appreciate no apologies for 650 sq. ft, and even stairs. Life goes on w/o Mcmansions, eh!
Excellent choices of color, shapes, frames, chairs, many different, and well placed.
No cookie cutter stuff here. Hooray!
Stuff dreams are made of!
Absolutely stunning home.
These look alot like the Ellington. Ive had my eyes on getting a studio there, this just made it a whole lot easier.
Classy, unique, sophisticated, cohesive...it is all very nice to view.
I adore this apartment, especially the front room with the black and white door. I can't imagine that my husband would be down with such a feminine interior...I imagine Monica's single? I wonder if my husband is the norm or if more women don't just tell their guys that they are going to design things however they themselves want.
OOH! looks so glam, i love it!
Monica, your home is fabulous! I love the red sofa and the pair of chairs in the living room. Revival is a great store.
I used to have that coaster set as well. I think I bought it at Tuesday Morning approximately 15 years ago.
Although I don't have Hollywood Regency decor in my home, I love that glamorous look. Glad to see KC well represented.
I live right by those! (I can tell by your balcony in the background) I've always wondered wonder what kind of space was inside. You have created everything I wish I could do in an apartment. I love everything you've done.
*Glasgow Jewelbox-The door is actually carved and was one of the elements that came with the condo that I fell in love with too. My neighbor and I are the only two units in the building with these. The builders downgraded to a painted version after we purchased but we got the real deal. (Not without a fight.) So cool! The color matches the walls throughout the rest of my condo. It's actually a pale gray called "On the Rocks" by Sherwin Williams. It's not too blue and not too brown with just enough color. A perfect gray for the space.
*Andru 3- You are on point with the building. Find me on facebook if you want check it out sometime. Go for a one bedroom if you can swing it!
*skoggins-I bought this place when I was single and while I'm not married, I have an amazing boyfriend who totally appreciates the style of the space and loves it! We've both got an eye for design and there's a mid-century mod out there waiting for us to design together happily ever after this one...
*Thanks, Midwestdiva and LexyAn in KC. Hollas!
AAAHHHHH!! That red sofa. Killer! And she has ghost chairs - swoon! And the ombre curtains (SQUEEEE!) and that chandelier. OH MY.
Just. OH MY. I want to come over. Not too far of a drive from StL. WHEEEEEE!!!
From the ghost chairs, red couch, vintage stereo, booze decanters...I love everything about your home.
The plate above your kitchen sink is awesome. It's not just decorate but seems like it would be very therapeutic. It would start my day off with a smile and giggle for sure! Love your pad...
I love the door!
Yay, Kansas City also! I used to live a mile or so from where she's at, and there are some really cool older homes/apartments in the area with so much character to them.
Ms. Monica! Good job- very well done! I love it!
smart, well put together - LOVE silver with the wall colors. Very inspirational work Monica - you really put yourself into creating such lovely energy in your home. I would sit down to a cocktail in this space any day!! Have to rush out to Sherman Williams now....
absolutely fabulous !
i loved this bit: "I didn't need a place to hang my hat; I needed a place to hang my curtains! "
<3 fellow kc native :)
where did you get the plate above the kitchen sink? I love it!
@beearthur you can a good search for "fonesetti plate" to find the plate over the sink. They aren't cheap.
@House Voyeur, thanks for the info. Yikes on the price. Adorable plates but I can't myself indulging in one at that price unless I find a great discount!
The plate over the sink would freek me out.
Lovely place though
I keep visiting this tour..it makes me happy! I tried the Slow Green from Sherman Williams and love love love it. It really makes anything white and silver really pop with glamour and elegance!
Absolutely gorgeous!!! I can't believe this is an actual home. Stunning!
How did you paint the black circles on the door? Decal or paint? I want to do this to my doors ASAP, but cannot fIgure out how to get that perfect circle. What kind of tape did you use?
