House Tour: Alberto and Jeff Inhabit an Icon (Phase I)
New York

albertojeffhousetour03.JPG

Name: Alberto and Jeff
Location: Fort Greene/BAM, Brooklyn
Size: 1360 sqft. 2-bdrm condo
Years lived in: 1.5 months

>> Enter Alberto and Jeff's Gallery!

tour2009.jpg Alberto and Jeff had a year and a half between closing and moving in to their new condo, to plan. According to Alberto, a house tour veteran, Jeff made multiple copies of a detailed floorplan of the new apartment and used the interim 18 months to sketch ideas as well as to plot out the sequence of events that would occur the moment they were handed the key. The apartment is in its first phase of completion...

The living room is the most complete as it is the first room one sees when entering the apartment. Jeff saw this as a priority so as to be shielded from all the move-in work yet completed. No one wants to walk into a new apartment and be greeted by boxes for weeks on end! Jeff, VP of visual merchandising for a big clothing company, is used to whipping a scene into shape very efficiently and very quickly. Within 2 weeks of moving in, the living room looked as it does here. Finished.

"Jeff has more stuff and is more of a sensualist," says Alberto as he shows me around their sleek new condo — a recent conversion in the Williamsburg Savings Bank. Both Jeff and Alberto used to live in very small apartments in the West Village. So, there are only a few pieces of furniture here that they brought with them. The space calls for larger scale items such as the dining room table, bed, sofa, and credenza, which were all site specific purchases.

Jeff and Alberto love to travel and when they do, they often bring back a treasure trove of local folk art and artifacts. The red theme of the living room accommodates equal parts Latin American and South East Asian imports. The red wall unites the wide range of oranges, pinks, and reds on display. Alberto and Jeff both came with big art collections, much of which still isn't on display! Prints and drawings by known artists are complemented by photos taken by Alberto during their travels.

Jeff and Alberto are faced with aligning their styles and their various and sundry possessions. Alberto is more of a minimalist, so to compromise for Jeff's ultra stimulating living room, the plan is for the bedroom to remain calm and spare. For now, the small, all black TV room also serves as an office and a guest bedroom. Plans are to take a smaller room currently stuffed with yet unpacked boxes and make it a dedicated office space. There are also plans to create a breakfast bar and tile the backsplash in the kitchen.

Off to a great start, there's more to go before this apartment meets Alberto and Jeff's rigorous standards. Check back in the next couple of months, to see Phase II.

So warm and comfortable, very sensual. Love the charcoal gray room. Unfortunately (for me) when I see so many tchotchkes my first thought is that it must take forever to clean.

I really like this tour. I do love all the South American influences, it reminds me of my happy travels. There is a lot of stuff but very well executed must be the visual merchandizing expertise coming through. Fun, fun art!

Using that pink color to offset all the art is really great. I am not a fan of black leather sofas but those are really beautiful and so perfect, they remind me of the classic Knoll sofa with the rosewood frame.

Cedar closet sigh!

Very clean ;)

I know firsthand what a pain to keep up with NYC dust and grim when you have a lot of collections, and books.

In the living room all the patterns and shapes work so harmoniously with each other. I really appreciate the aesthetic of the modern kitchen, it balances out the fullness of your collections in the rest of the room. Nicely done!
I too love that black room. Have fun with it~

Did you know there are beautiful mid century ceramic piggy banks, replicas of the Williamsburg Bank Building . In the 1950's-1960's the bank gave them out to customers. One sat on my brothers dresser when we were growing up.
I'm sure you could find one on Ebay!
Best wishes in your new home.

Thanks for all the great comments. Jeff is the true genius behind this. For the record, some of the photos on the wall are also his shots.
For those who mentioned Paul Smith, he is one of our favorite designers, so not surprising that our home bears his mark.
The colorful carpet in the living room is originally from Afghanistan (per the folks at ABC). The dark rug under the dining table is from India (again, per ABC).
And yes! We have a small collection of Williamsburg Bank coin banks! But thanks for pointing that out! We really enjoy the building's history...

Wow! 1360 is serious square footage in Brooklyn. Not surprising that it took the resources of a professional visual merchandiser to get this 'full' effect in such a short time.

I love the eclecticism and use of strong colour and pattern. The MCM pieces are mixed in just so; it doesn't look like an attempt at recreating a 'period' decor. The scuffed up Barcelona chair is genius - reupholstering would just erase the uniqueness of the piece. Chrome Gnome - amazing! And a big bowl of jets is way cooler than any number of dunnies, IMO.

The kitchen, though very clean and sleek, seems to belong to another aesthetic - not even a single magnet or note on the fridge looks odd juxtaposed with the lush collections in the next room. The jar of baby chicks seems to indicate that maybe Jeff is just getting started in there.

The rug is not Madeleine Weinrib. Made in India, can't remember the name of the company...
The windows in the LR will stay without window furnishings. The windows in the MBR are another story. We need something to great darkness - it gets very bright in the morning. We are considering some kind of shade or shutter.
Thanks again to all -- I'm glad you are finding such inspiration in the place. We definitely do too!

Can you tell me about the wood-slatted table in the guest room? I have an identical one (hand-me-down-gift YEARS ago) and never tried to identify it.

I also like the simplicity of the kitchen after the fullness of the adjoining room. Lovely throughout.

And, boy, does that turtle have a lot to look at to keep occupied!

PAINT: The colors are -- in the MBR, Benjamin Moore "Portland Gray"; in the LR, Benjamin Moore "a la mode". In the tv/guest room, Benjamin Moore "Black Beauty".
As for the wood-slatted table -- a flea-market hand-me-down. We don't know where it started it's life.

The jar of chicks had me cracking up. I'm jealous of your colorful blanket collection (stacked on floor). I love the dresser in the bedroom the way it is, in the unfinished oak. I'm sure it would also look nice in ebony but it's so beautiful natural.

A side note to AT: thanks for including descriptions with the photos! (Not all house tours get photo descriptions.) I enjoy the house tours much more when things are put into context the story behind the room/object is explained. Thanks.

Lovely. If the walls in the master bedroom were a few shades more blue, I'd happily live there 4 ever. (2 grey rooms is too much for me, but that charcoal is brilliant.)

I'm not sure if this is due to the photog's emphasis, but I suspect one reason the profusion of objects in living room works is the way we see paired objects (heads, dolls etc) peppered around the place. It's a great balance of variety and consistency, and feels like a visual cesura. Such a pleasure.

Hi Everyone...

I'm glad you're enjoying what we've done to the place so far...it's a work in progress to be sure. For those of you who have asked about the cheerleader print, it came from an amazing father and son graphic design team who are based in Barcelona. I met them at their studio last year and saw this amazing poster hung on their gallery wall. It was a self promotional piece they had done and to my understanding, it was never created for sale or circulation (they printed me a copy as a gift). You can check out their website at www.vallery.es They are insanely talented. Again...thanks for all the enthusiasm.

Hi Jeff,

You're home is truly beautiful. I'm in awe. Can i ask if the rug under the dining table copes well with the movement and weight of the dining chairs... plus guests? Is it quite a flat rug? The rug under the table is a really tight, flat weave (with a pad underneath). It's 100% cotton and has held up so far. That said...it's also new and hasn't been subjected to many punishing dinner parties...yet. We'll keep you posted.

Also...thanks for your concern for the turtle. We've filled the tank some since the photos were taken and he actually has a rock terrace that may not show in the pictures where he climbs out, sunbathes and does his odd turtle yoga. We love him.
