House Tour: Giulia's 'Fantasy Girl' Formula

giulia01.JPG

Name: Giulia

Location: Park Slope, Brooklyn

Size: 900 sqft, one-bdrm co-op

Years lived in: 1.5 years

Designed to be every 'girl's fantasy' Giulia's new home is a much more accurate reflection of her taste and preference than her last living situation.

Giulia does public relations for Harper's Magazine and is writing a memoir with recipes due out next year. She is a wonderful host and takes etiquette seriously. I arrived and was greeted with hot apple muffins! The one exception, according to Giulia is "when people come over for dinner, I show them my closets and it's wrong."

A showcase for those who transform their residences into homes via innovative intervention Do you have an idea for a house tour? Let me know! jill@apartmenttherapy.com

When Giulia found this apartment and moved in, much of it was already upgraded to its current painted wood, streamlined state. Giulia replaced most of her previous apartment's contents but kept friends' art and family heirlooms. She bought the type of furniture and accessories she had always imagined owning. Whether the pieces came from Target, ABC Home, JC Penney, or DWR, together the look evoked what Giulia imagined as the ultimate home that served her every need.

AT SURVEY:
Style: Eclectic affordable

Inspiration: My childhood fantasies of what a grown-up apartment should be.

Favorite Element: The unexpected sunlight

Biggest Challenge: Lack of a place to put a broom and mop.

What Friends Say: No one can help being impressed, but that may just be because I expect them to be and they are good friends.

Biggest Embarrassment: Sometimes my oven goes on fire or develops a smoke condition, this always happens when I am entertaining.

Proudest DIY: My wireless speaker system: I can listen to the same music simultaneously in the living room, bedroom, and kitchen. Men can't believe I was able to hook it up all by myself.

Biggest Indulgence: The roman shades in my bedroom. I choose my bedroom paint color to match the shades that were left by the previous owner; it didn't. The shades I bought cost more then it did to paint the entire apartment.

Best Advice: Only date people who don’t own anything of their own. You don't want to end up living with someone with a lot of possessions that will cloud your carefully-conceived vision. I look for Marxists, or the homeless who have no more than a rucksack full of stuff.

Dream Source: The Paris Apartment on East 1st Street.

I never use the acronym "omg", but this is one house tour that deserves an OMG. so beautiful with great touches of personality. if only I had free reign to "fantasy girlify" our home. off to put out an ad for "Marxist" on my local craigslist....

btw, can i ask what type of cord you used to hang your pictures? I have picture rails in our apartment and am still figuring out how to hang frames from them. Is there a special way to attach the cord to the eyelets of the frame?

The layout is my ideal apt. If only I could find this in Chicago and affordable in my budget - which isn't much. Love the comment about who to date - my boyfriend and I moved in together recently and I'm trying to hide most of his stuff. Thanks for sharing!

wow-- a godsend! I've been struggling with the idea of black/white toile or damask wallpaper in my black and white classic NY bathroom-- and now I can see how it looks-- fantastic!

shutters-- what a concept.

beautiful dresser in the bedroom.

Lovely!

And I totally understand about the significant-other decor-dilemma. If my bf ever moves in, we're having a big-ole' 70's furniture and ugly poster bonfire over at his place first.

wow! could you please tell me where you got the lovely peacock-printed pillows on the brown setee? they're fabulous!

I will answer some questions for Giulia. Toile seems to be holding up wonderfully in the bathroom. The pillows on settee are from Calypso Home. The kitchen was renovated by previous owner. Headboard is from West Elm and is actually a room divider standing behind the bed.

Those (awesomely karate-chopped =) peacock feather pillows are Thomas Paul, if I'm not mistaken.

Also, that advice is priceless!

First, you look great in the final photo!
Second, There is no reason to hide your appliances. They're perfectly fine.

Your bedroom is very pretty. I like it.

One question though, if it's every girl's fantasy apartment why isn't Russel Crowe sitting, somewhere, bare-chested and in his boxer shorts asking for another beer?

oh, maybe that's just my fantasy.

Hello everyone, Giulia here, with answers:

To Steph, the red slipper chairs are from ABC, they are made by Cisco Brothers.

Selena, I get the cables and hooks from Lee's Art Shop on West 57th Street, they are in the framing department and they are expensive (about $20 a pop). Many hardware stores also sell fishing line and wall hooks that can be used for this purpose. I use a combination.

GHB, I got the red step ladder stool on ebay but Target also has them, they are made by a company called coco, do a google search and you'll find many venues from which to purchase one.

Turtlesq is right about Thomas Paul.

Jennifer in SF, the paint color in the bedroom is Benjamin Moore's Portland Gray, it is incredibly beautiful. I thought it would be gray but it turned out to be a sort of lavender which is stunning, and I'm thrilled with it even though I had to buy the new shades.

And to I Love Upstate: I have a tray addiction too! I think it's because I love to serve, especially those boyfriends who I do not want living with me. Paradoxically, my compulsion to serve scares them away. I am writing a book about this.

Jan Brady, previous owner redid the kitchen, she was brilliant and I was lucky to inherit from her.

Hi Giulia, this is a great apartment. I am a bit late with questions but I wanted to know where did you buy: 1. the big mirror in your bedroom and 2. that box (or basket) where you put magazines in the living room.
