tour2009.jpg We all know people who enjoy renovating their home and who take particular pride in respecting the original detailing or who wish to pay homage to the history of their dwelling place. Martha and Jeff, one can say without a doubt, have taken this approach to a whole new level…

Martha and Jeff did not buy this century old house lightly. Their last home was much smaller and down the block, so their commitment to Staten Island is well established. This latest purchase took on the self-imposed responsibility of restoring it nail by nail to as much of its original appearance as possible. And while they are not wearing turn of the last century garb, they do dress of an entirely different era than the present (primarily evocative of the early 1950’s).

Dedication, meticulousness, and unrelenting patience are mild adjectives when trying to explain the lengths Jeff has gone to do justice to the renowned architect Edward Sargent’s work.

Ebay and flea markets are inevitably constants in this couple’s lives. Because they have a big house with what seems like infinite space, there is no fear of having too many collectibles. So, they keep amassing history and arranging it under their one roof.

The only aberration I noticed, in the entire house, was the stainless steel refrigerator in the kitchen. Otherwise, it really is like walking through a museum… in awe of the work put into creating this home!

Martha and Jeff's Survey
Style: Late Victorian/Early Colonial Revival (built 1903).
Inspiration: Preservation of a prominent architect’s work — Edward A. Sargent. Imagining what lives have lived here before us.
Favorite Element: The split staircase that takes you to different rooms on the second floor. Gives it a ‘secret passage’ feel.
Biggest Challenge: Undoing the disastrous 1980’s kitchen renovation.
What Friends Say: Wow, I feel like I’m in a museum.
Biggest Embarrassment: Jeff can be found at 3am either on a ladder doing home renovations with the blinds open, or else in the yard gardening.
Proudest DIY: Kitchen and half-bathroom that feels completely original to the house even though we designed and built every square inch of it. Especially the tin ceiling — everyone thinks it’s been there a hundred years!
Biggest Indulgence: Stripping and restoring all of the doors in the house.
Best Advice: It’s a labor of love — the work will never be ‘done’.
Dream Source: Ebay!

OK I LOVE this place. It looks kind of like one of those houses that never changes - but in a good way. Kind of like how you come home from college after a long time and nothing's changed...as it hasn't changed for decades anyway. But there's none of the things you WISH would change, like Mom's puppy-shaped toilet paper holder made of poofy plaid fabric.
You need to grab ahold of this place and never let go!!

That dining room! That kitchen! What a wonderful house! And so refreshing to see people with taste that isn't exactly what everyone else has!

But, please, AT. You showed the absolutely least yummy picture on the top of the post.

That's a really neat house! But I have a question... how do you have half a bedroom?

Absolutely beautiful. I love lots of the homes featured on AT, but this is one of very, very few that I would love to live in, exactly as it is. What a wonderful, lively work of art. The kitchen in particular makes me swoon. My dream is to have a house like this someday!

Love your portrait collection, I've been meaning to start one up myself... and omg, I can't even imagine how much space you have. 8 bedrooms?? Oy. Love the house though, it looks lived in and comfortable, but still stylish. I especially love your use of green throughout. Keeping the pipes exposed is a good idea, I'll keep that in mind if I ever purchase a historic home.

I think it's almost a little too period for me, but there are so many details I love. The exposed pipes, the whole kitchen is so stunning, the downstairs bath, the shoes lined up. The vignettes are truly poignant.

Wow. Can't say it is really my style, as far as choices I would want to live with day in and out, but it's a beautiful house and the love and care you've taken in restoring it is evident everywhere. Great job.

The kitchen and dining room are stunning! If you ever need a little extra $ you could definitely rent it out for film shoots.

Love this place. If I lived here, I'd wear vintage hats and dresses everyday too. You folks did a fantastic job of fixing it up without losing any of the period charm, yet it still feels like a home rather than a museum.

This is a lovely representation of the Victorian era in a pared down, unfussy way. You've kept the integrity of the house and chose your furnishings and lighting throughout well. I love the pendant schoolhouse lights and other period lights shown. The kitchen is wonderful and is probably my favorite, but it wasn't an easy choice... as I like the rest of the house very much. It was a real treat to see this.

Fascinating people living in a fascinating house. I think I'd get freaked out by the unrelenting historicity of it all, though.

Perhaps they have one of the 8 bedrooms secretly decked out in the latest IKEA furniture and Graham & Brown wallpaper to be used as an escape room?

Excellet hallstand, I have one like that at home, it originally came from our family home and before that I think my Grandmother's home. It's difficult to tell its age from the photograph but it certainly fits in with the late Victorian / Edwardian (as we call it in UK) era.

The ceiling fan is a gyro... you will find it easily if you google gyro ceiling fan. We are doing a similar one in our son's nursery.

Love the green Hoosier in the kitchen. I have a white one in mine. So handy for baking!

Always love to see other historical homes. :)

Holy Cow, I love this place!!! Martha and Jeff, you've done an amazing job! I love how you were able to stay true to the period without compromising your personal style. I'm going to disagree with the others who've commented that the house reminds them of a museum. This is a home, with a lot of fun personality. I think that the mix of art deco, Victorian and other 00-40's furnishings keep it from being a 'period piece.' I also love the blueprints in the foyer.

There are so many fun things about your home and kudos for not making the rooms feel dark and overwhelming by all of the wood. If I ever got a chance to do a Home Tour, I would source your house as my Dream Source!

It's so nice to look in to one of those beautiful houses in St. George. My grandfather lived near there in a 1908 house (about half the size of this one though) and had much the same ideas about decorating as these people. This makes me want to move to Staten Island.

I am in love with the portraits and the gemeral mood your home invokes.

Also, you have so many wonderful shades of green, but even though you have larger pieces in it, the color doesn't scream a "theme" accent color like so many other homes I have seen.

Perfect!!

I tend to agree that with 3000sf, there MUST be another place to put the litter box. That having been said, I love that they're keeping it real by leaving the litter box in the bathroom for the photo. Sometimes when I look at some of these house tours, I feel like there must be something wrong with me that I need my big tube TV to be the focal point of the living room, and that my cat needs a utilitarian plastic box in which to do her business.

Sort of neat for a period house. The old woodwork is beautiful. Would not be livable for me - too dark and too much stuff but I would love to visit!

I love that the kitty litter box is in the bathroom! That's life. And it's kind of funny that it's right next to the toilet. I had a litter box in my bathroom until recently. I swear, my cat would pee when I peed just to bond with me! I had a baby recently, and the cat is not getting the love. I think it's important to keep it real when posting pics of small homes. I'm very turned off by super sleek interiors a la Architectural Digest and a lot times, Elle Decor.
