In theory, the paint on the walls is one of the easiest things to change about any space. In practice, however, it can be costly, time-consuming and downright annoying to re-paint a room, let alone a whole home. That's why many people worry about choosing colors that stand the test of time, and will look as fresh 10 years from now as the day they went up. If you're looking for some trend-proof shades for you home, read on for a few ideas.

The Right White

I hear you—duh. But any roundup of classic colors must include white; it's the original no-color color. Easy to decorate around, capable of making a space look modern and spacious (providing it gets good natural light), and nearly impossible to tire of, white is a workhorse. And with a full spectrum of options from creamy warm whites to blue-based cooler tones and gray-whites in between, there's something for everyone.

Colors to Try:

Light(ish) Neutrals

This is a big category, encompassing greige, beige, gray and taupe. If you're after a light, neutral look but worried white will be too stark, something in this family will always work. Sure the trend pendulum will swing the range (currently grey is trendier than the warmer beige, for instance), but in general, keeping things neutral and restful will never steer you too far wrong.

Colors to Try:

Powerful Pink

Yes, we're currently in a pink "moment", but I'm talking pinks beyond the dusky, almost-nude that's adorning today's walls (though I love it, too). It might seem like a strange choice, but this uber-flattering shade (seriously, there's a version for everyone) is surprisingly versatile on walls. Whether bright and peachy or cool and sophisticated, pink always packs a punch.

Sky Blue

Here's one that's currently not trending; blue's more serious iterations navy and ink are more where fashion's at right now. But is there anything more calming or uplifting than the color of a cloud-free sky (or this amazing kitchen from Better Home & Gardens)? Light, clear (or even slightly grayed) blues are classic choices for bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchen cabinets—really, anywhere you want to put them.

Deep Red

Another classic, red will never truly go away. It's warm, dynamic and—when done right, like the above living room from Neptune —inviting. It simply infuses the most modest space with a sense of grandeur. Said to stimulate the appetite, it looks great in a dining room, but if you're brave enough, hallways, living rooms and powder rooms can also rock this bold hue.
