If you're thinking of upgrading your media station, your instinct might tell you to spend your money on a nice new flat screen TV. But if you're shopping on a budget, or want a more creative solution for your movie-night needs, consider foregoing a television altogether to get a projector instead.

Projectors come with a host of surprising benefits, and though you might assume a projector would feel a bit too outdated for your entertainment needs, don't worry. Modern projectors can totally support your Netflix addiction, and a whole lot more. Here are some of the many reasons a projector is a great alternative to a television.

1. A projector can take up no floor or wall space.

With a television, you either have to mount it to the wall, or you need have a stand that's the size of a hefty cabinet resting under it. Not only does the latter solution use valuable floor space, it often makes the TV the focus point of an entire living room. A projector is smaller and can be simply placed on a shelf, occupying no floor space at all.

If you buy a retractable projector screen, you also don't have to sacrifice much wall space for projection either. Instead of leaving a large wall blank for the projector to shine on, you can pull down the soft screen over any wall art you may have. Alternately, you can mount the retractable screen to the ceiling, which can do double duty as a makeshift room separator in a studio apartment.

2. You can get more screen for your buck.

If you want a large flat screen TV, you're typically going to need to spend hundreds of dollars. But with a projector that costs less than $100, you can get play your favorite movies at 120 inches wide. Spend a little more, and the width can grow even wider. You can also get high-quality screen images for less, too, as many projectors play in HD.

3. You can create serious smart home vibes.

A projector might seem like an retro piece of equipment, but with the right setup, you can hook up your Apple TV or Chromecast to your projector, as well as a DVD player and video game console.

4. It's more portable.

One big difference between a TV and a projector is that most projectors can fit in a backpack. If you don't feel like hosting movie night at your place, you can bring the projector to a friends house and hook it up there. Or take it outside and project on a blank wall for a backyard block party movie night.

5. You don't have to worry about kids or pets knocking it over.

If you have any rambunctious children in the house, or a dog who doesn't realize how strong his tail is, a projector will put your mind at ease. Because it's small, durable, and out of the way, it's much less likely to be bumped into and knocked over by your energetic family or roommates.

6. It makes movie night more special.

Even though a projector meets the needs of a modern life, it still feels distinct from the TVs most people own. Watching a movie on a projector feels more special and can feel more romantic, too. Also, because of the image size a good projector creates, even when you're watching with a large group, there's rarely a bad seat in the house.
