This is my big search and I have failed miserably up to now: an alarm clock that is nice to hear go off... great looking and does not knock my socks off. A nice calm nudge into the day ....doesn't that sound nice? Any ideas anyone??
Use your iPhone -- you can choose all sorts of sounds.
Otherwise, I would suggest a radio set to a calm station (in Canada, that would be CBC).
i'm with mschatelaine- iphone all the way- or perhaps an ihome. i do really like the look of some of the above alarm clocks though, namely the one by tivoli.

I have that infinity instruments clock on my nightstand because I thought it was cute. Its alarm is something akin to what I imagine the doorbell to the gates of hell must sound like.
I use my iPhone instead.
I love my Moomin clock, it has a real ring that just sounds so good to me, and is basically the cutest: http://www.spoiltrottengifts.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/m/m/mmc1clk.jpg
First month on new job my alarm clock did not go off and I arrived more than hour late...I got this alarm clock from friends..it is called "clocky" and it makes the most annoying sound, if you want it will even jump of your nightstand and you will have to chase it to make it stop screeching..but boy is it affective, never been late and I do not snooze....for you out there that needs a real alarm..check it out
Thanks for this post. I'm having a hard time finding a nice-looking alarm clock WITHOUT that annoying ticking sound... tired of using my phone, but I haven't found a replacement yet.
I bought a sunrise alarm clock several months ago, and can't speak highly enough of it. For those who don't get much sunlight in the mornings or who need natural light, this is such a blessing.

npink, I'm tempted to buy one of those RIGHT NOW. I can't afford it; then again, I can't afford to be late to work, either. It was pure luck that I got to work on time today. I woke up 20 minutes before my start time.
