Name: Sacha & Johan
Location: Pretoria, South Africa
We were in the very fortunate position of being able to build our own house. We both loved the idea of a large loft space, so decided it was now or never. The journey started off a bit bumpy as it was difficult to find an architect that wasn't corrupted by the mainstream. We eventually found our house in the mind of a young rookie. High risk, high reward.
The design process was a blast, we finally had a canvas that we could do anything we wanted with. Of course finding finishes that are unconventional also presented a challenge. We however overcame this hurdle by trawling pawn shops and garage sales. If we couldn't find it we made it. Our old furniture was repaired and repainted as was the "new" furniture.
Building this house has enabled us to free our minds completely. We really put it all out there. It's a reflection of our personalities and most importantly it's a exhibition our love for each other.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Lovely. Totally my taste
swooning over that kitchen.
Congratulations on building your dream home! I really like the bedroom and the bathroom.
I'd like to get more of an idea of how the rooms flow into each other. It looks like an open-space kind of concept but I can't see how the kitchen, dining and living rooms connect or how the styles of decor gel together.
Also, wondering about the exterior. Is it a house or an apartment?
One word: AMAZING!!!!
I love every room, but I don't like how all rooms look like they belong to a different house. I only feel a continuity between the bedroom and bathroom. Besides that, everything is gorgeous.
Funky! (In a good way.) I really like the color combinations that you have used. Unexpected, but well done and inspiring, especially because I usually shy away from color. How fun to work with a blank canvas! Thanks for sharing. --Tara :)
What a fun place! It looks like a great place for entertaining. Please invite me to your next party!
Nice! Some really unusual - in a good way - touches.
MORE PHOTOS! Me likey!
The mood in the dining area is different from the rest of the house, I think...
so cool it made me laugh! ii love it, great job!
Love the headboard...care to elaborate?
"..corrupted by the mainstream..found in the mind of a young rookie.." CUTE (agree, understand) =)
but hey, was not the kitchen once featured elsewhere on AT, i rem seeing it before... *wondering..
JulianneMay, not sure about before that, but I think this kitchen was one of the recent color contest entries.
Can't go wrong with Tintin prints!! <3
I am in love with using a screen as a headboard. What a terrific color!
Love this space!! How wonderful that you had the opportunity to create such a home. Enjoy!
Fantastic! Let's see more!
Dying of jealousy
Adore the lights over the living area. Where are they from?
WOW! Thanks for all the great comments.
@dearmisha - Firstly thank you. It is a house, that was based on the idea of large open loft space. The ground floor is completely open plan.
The TV Area is just behing the bar stools in the kitchen, and the dining room is to the right of the kitchen, with the stairs going up to the first floor in between. I hope that gives you a slighty better idea.
Colour wise we have used red in the kitchen aswell as in the TV Area, with pink being used in the dining and TV area.
Style wise most pieces are a take on "modern classics".
@anita83 - Thanks. I can see what you mean, given the 5 photos. In 'real life' it flows perfectly. Unfortunately you are only given 5 photos, so it's difficult. Would love to add more photos.
@audibot - The headboard is made up of 2 wooden screens/room dividers that we put together, painted and mounted on the wall.
@elliosl - We made them, they our version of a modern chandelier.
Sorry forgot to add.
We wanted the downstairs area to be fun and the upstairs(bedrooms) more tranquil.
A barber chair?
After this, I have to say that the kitchen they submitted to Room for Color is the *least* gorgeous room in their house.
Beyond fabulous!
@buster1 - Yes it is! It's been re upholstered in faux crocodile skin.
I love love love the lighting in the Living room. Beautiful house.
Beautiful use of color! Where were you during the color contest. Although, I am a little bothered that the rooms don't seem to flow, but each room is so incredibly gorgeous.
I adore your bedroom. Love the turquoise, and the headboard is too fabulous. Also love the color scheme of the dining room. And the color scheme of the living room. Not sure how it all works together, though. Perhaps that is because I need to see a full house tour!
Maybe it's just me, and not to nit-pick or anything, but the bedroom curtain just seems wrong... Maybe some funky shutter to accent that bed would work better for me... My eyes went straight there catching something out of place. Please take as constructive criticism!
I am so proud of people who present their own style of home, one that will thrill and accomodate the owner. I love looking at it and pray they will be so happy. sincerely, mary
Please, please, please tell us how you made the living room lights. Thanks so much.
Beautiful!!!
WOW!
I think it crosses the line between "interior design" and "set design", resulting in a space that's too theatrical and, frankly, camp to accomodate daily living.
However I appreciate that the South African aesthetic is more "in-your-face" than it is elsewhere, so within context it's not as out there as it appears. And if it makes Sacha and Johan happy, kudos to them for making their dreams come true.
Very lovely home, I love the colors!
oh the bathroom.
that's my dream bath.
stunning!
Thank you for all the great comments.
@primitiveye - Looking at the photo, I have to say I agree with you.
The colour appears totally different to what it is in 'real life'.
@slangups - As simple as electrical cable and large bulbs.
@ blandwagon - South African interior design is anything but "in your face".
The design elements we have used in our home is also very far from the general South African aesthetic.
Love the sitting/tv room. The colors and the windows and that brick wall are all inviting as heck.
Also love the bathroom. The gothic/dramatic modern thing is not to my taste, but good for you for making a bold statement. A dinner party would certainly be unforgettable.
Well, this is amazing. Simply amazing.
@ 580sqftofbliss - Thanks, I understand the dramatic modern part, but not sure what you mean by "Gothic"? Would you mind elaborating?
Love the Headboard and pink dining room chairs and everything about your kitchen...house tour please!
Pretty mental. Looks like part of the Liberace museum.
@ Pipstar - ROTFL!!!
Sigh...though not my style...I loved the dining room and the chairs were the business! Okay, I give up...I talked myself into it...I love this space!
I love the barber chair. Totally unique, again somebody who buys furniture at Wal Mart might have a problem understanding the barber chair or maybe he doesn't like getting his hair cut at home and likes to go to Fantastic Sams. Great space.
beautiful space! thanks for sharing. would you mind letting us know where you found that gorgeous shiny bull/rams(?) head? thanks!
Love your bed & bath. Glam but not stuffy.
