Years lived in: 1 1/2 years
When you walk into Samer's home you sense you are someplace special; someplace that has an interesting history. The building was originally built for actor Jack Haley, aka the Tin Man in "The Wizard of Oz." Over the years it was home to many models, rock stars and writers. In the summer of 1960, the penthouse had its most notable resident - Senator John F. Kennedy. It was in Samer's building that the senator found out that the Democratic delegates nominated him as the candidate for presidency.

Samer immediately fell in love with the apartment after seeing its amazing windows. "I entertain a lot and love eating at a circular table. I knew my table would fit right into the space the moment I walked in." When it came to deciding where to place the dining room table, Samer made an unexpected choice. Instead of having the dining room right off the kitchen, he decided to set up the table on the opposite side of the apartment. He made the room off the kitchen a lounge area for guests to congregate while he is cooking in the kitchen.

OMG! Its the grow-up version of my apartment. When do I move in?
so inspiring. beautiful. amazing. i love everything (especially its history).
Wow. Absolutely stunning. I am in love with those windows...and all the furniture. I just think that bed is crying out for a fabulous upholstered headboard now :)
I would never leave the breakfast nook. I LOVE this room!!!!
I have the same coffee table! I love the couch, anyone know where it's from?
Looks so comfortable and inviting!
Wow, this is gorgeous. Love your use of color balanced with all that white. What's the interesting wall object with the giant spider on it? Can't quite make it out. The lighting and windows are such a fine feature, makes the dining area feel like you're outdoors. Fantastic place, thank you for sharing your inspiration with us.
There's a whole-lotta WOW goin on there!
I love your two circular spaces.
The best tour I can remember. Beautiful!
Loved it! Great light and spot-on decor. Great job!
So gorgeous it hurts. Can anyone id the green "flower" (in the vase with an orange dahlia)?
Such a visually pleasing environment. I am in love with the black ceiling in the kitchen! Also, I wanted to mention that the photos on this post are wonderful!!
What a beautiful place!!
Such beautiful roundness -- I love the blue couch and big ottoman and the round dining table. It inspires me to bring a few circles into my too-square home.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. I love the home's original details and your furniture, design and decor choices are magnificent!
Gorgeous place! I became obsessed with Morrocan rugs during my Marrakesh trip last year too. I love how you're using them in your home! Just right touch of Morocco!
I am completely enamored with this tour. It is stunning in its seamless mix of eras, casual elegance and perfect touches of whimsical charm. Bravo, Mr. Fawaz. All that and such a rich history too.
btw - elephant ride pic on fridge = smile.
I lurve this place! I am a lover of things around the house (I'm a few more knickknacks away from a hoarder) but I love the lack of stuff in your apartment yet it still looks like a home! So jealous... I wanna go clean out my stuff... Don't tell my husband as Mr T would make me do it!
So light, so airy, so colorful, so perfect!
That sofa!! It's almost identical to mine! I bought mine for $40 at a garage sale and then later had it rebuilt and reupholstered in turquoise velvet. How wild!
WANT HALF CIRCLE COUCH!
just beautiful. wonderful history and you do that place justice. the dining room is gorgeous.
Wow. Seriously impressive.
Normally I'm not that impressed with "original-ish" 30s kitchens and bathrooms, but these are fantastic.
Simple elegance! LOVE IT ALL! The dining room is gorgeous and I love the lamp in the bedroom. Everything in this home is so soothing. My hubby would want me to mention the lighting in the ceiling of the living room (former electrician who used to install and loves lighting like this). You have impeccable taste, sir. :)
Fabulous apt. Fabulous building. Though i've heard that people have issues with the landlord.
Drooooool. Gorgeous. Liveable. Stylish. Cosy.
The blue couch. THE BLUE COUCH! xo
OMG! You live in the best building ever! I have seen that apartment empty you have made it glow :) Congrats, please share about the circular sofa :)
Someone please tell me that the leggy nightmare in #24 is decoration. I don't want it to be real. *shudders*
Not 1 but 2 of those gorgeous windows?????!!!! I am sooo J.
That light!
I too am curious about the object over the sink. It certainly looks like it has a function. Quite a puzzle.
This is beautiful. I ADORE the blue couch in front of the amazing window and I ADORE the flower art piece.
I have window envy.
I absolutely adored this house tour. I enjoy many, but I am rarely driven to comment. Bravo.
Does anyone know what the wire hanging contraption is in the kitchen? Does it fold open to dry wet dishcloths?
OH those windows!
Can you explain the last photo? I can't figure it out at all... and maybe provide a rough floor plan?
Love this tour! Every aspect is beautiful. I personally love the kitchen and also would like to know what that spider object is.....pray tell!
This is what they mean when they say a space has "good bones."
Those window bays--to die for. Utterly beautiful. So glad they are uncovered.
A very very good friend of mine lived in that apartment for YEARS!!!
Does your kitchen window go behind the backsplash? I am wondering about that. We have a really old kitchen with low counters and a long window. I am wondering if I can replace the cabinets/counters without replacing the window?
This is what I wanted my 1939 Moderne apartment to be. Sadly I have moved away from that beautiful building, I wish I had done more with that fabulous space.
The "wire contraption" with the spider on it is rack for holding Nespresso coffee capsules: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FWYR10/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0028Y4GVA&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1TS16JN2HEXN9NCBG0KD
(Greatest invention ever after the Soda Stream.)
(cont.) This is the Nespresso machine we bought: http://www.amazon.com/Nespresso-C100T-Single-Serve-Automatic-Espresso/dp/B000FCRLLE/ref=pd_ts_zbs_k_694632_1?pf_rd_p=299484501&pf_rd_s=right-6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=694632&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=04PYD2RZ3Q0EMG5HJF20
It's basically "espresso for dummies" for about 200 USD + around 60 cents per capsule.
Ooh la la. Love love love.
You've created a beautiful and warm home. I really love it and I think it's one of the best home tours I've seen on AT.
Wow, moustaches are back.. Nice place too...
Very "posh". Samer's not exactly short of a buck is he? Looks expensive. Well done though.
I was hooked by the turquoise couch! What a lovely home, and the history is amazing!
I like the mix of Art Déco and Mid-Century.
Stun. Ing. That half circle of windows is to die for! LOVE.
"'S wonderful ! 'S marvelous !"
tune sung by Diana Krall
comes to mind.
Love the tile, the uncluttered feel, the windows, the light - well, everything.
Why don't we build in the art deco style any more? It's so freakin' beautiful! This place is lovely, and Samer has accentuated the space with some very well-chosen things.
My only criticism - and it's a tiny one - is that the living room needs a colour tweak. Notice how the splashes of turquoise, blue and red in the kitchen and TV area make them sing. The living room needs a few little dashes of colour - a blue pillow, a red vase - to emphasise the beauty of the neutrals.
A beautiful, yet inviting, wonder of a place:)
I'd like to move in. This might be my favorite house tour to date.
By far this is the coolest apartment ever posted on A.T. It's beautiful and smart. Love being inspired.
So stylish and beautiful. Jealous of that incredible natural light the space has!
Does anyone know where the standing light to the right of his bed is from? Looked at the sites listed and couldn't find... I need it!!
AT, floor plan please.
Those ceilings are crazy amazing! And the floors! So shiiiiiiiny!
The half circle couch was money very well spent. Love!
The color scheme is so harmonious and soothing, I love it! I am usually not a fan of clustered art, but it works oh so well here!
Beautiful, comfortable and inviting .
This has got to be my favorite house tour, ever. The balance of wood and metal does it for me. And never did I think I would like black and red as much as I do on that kitchen countertop. WOW!
Rarely have I seen so many positive comments. They are spot on.
Can you please tell me your source for the couch and ottoman? Dining nook window and trayed ceiling - mm -mm -mm. That spider thing would scare the crap out of me on a daily basis! Thanks so much for sharing!
One of the best tours I've seen in a long time!
This is really remarkable. Such great light & understated choices in such a bold space. I want to curl up like a cat in front of those round windows! Gorgeous.
Stunning. The bones of the place are beautiful--those windows! the ceiling!--and I love what's been done here. The blue couch is lovely.
Really lovely. I'm a huge fan of MCM, but hate when it looks like a showroom. This does not.
To the commenter who disdainfully writes, "Very "posh". Samer's not exactly short of a buck is he? Looks expensive. Well done though," -jealous much? These types of backhanded comments really tick me off. This is about taste and style. Poor people have it and some rich people have it. If people choose to spend more money on their home than you would, it's their business.
yes, such a good feeling here. I love the art and your collage diy is wonderful! Good on ya!
ValHalla, the green poofy flower is a Green Ball Dianthus.
It's a trendy cut flower that comes originally from South America. It lasts more than a week with care, and has no discernible scent. :)
It doesn't propagate by seed or by cuttings, but live plants will grow in (at least) the southern US.
I might not "like" everything picked for this space, BUT I am impressed with how it cal came together and the tidiness of it all. Kudos!
Love the house!!! What is the last picture of exactly? Is that outdoor lighting?
This place is beautiful.Love the furniture, lighting, breakfast nook (I want a breakfast nook!).The history is just the icing on the cake.
This is absolutely, fantastically gorgeous. Need I say more.
One of those tours where you immediately feel pangs of jealousy. Stunning architectural details in this home. Circular window nook, seriously?
I likey!
I love it when good apartments happen to people who know how to REALLY make them sing! This is all kinds of delicious. That circular couch is to be lived for. Everything else is, too.
gosh absolutely beautiful! love the use of white and color (and the plants!!) very well done.
Your decision to place your dining table in that nook was brilliant.
O_o Gor.geous. My favourite house tour EVER on AT.
Pic 24...is that an ALIVE spider?
Stunning. And yes his apartment is too. I've noticed so often attractive people have attractive homes.
Ha ha ha! I love the last comment posted here. He is stunning! And I also love the home and all of your beautiful things. Great eye, great arrangements, lovely.
That specialty designed couch - amazing. The colour is beautiful.
I've died and gone to heaven.
You have yummy taste. I adore your home.
This has got to be my favourite house tour ever!!!!!
Amazing how mid-century and moroccan work together! Very inspiring!
oh...my....Gosh! Those were the first words that entered my head upon gazing at this apartment!!
Oh so love that chesterfield and ottoman! Well, actually,...Everything!
P.S: Style is not pejudiced- it can be found amongst the rich and poor! I just didn't realize you had to be 'short of bucks' in order to have your pics taken for AT!
That is a brilliant home! I'm keeping a snapshot of the window room as it is harmonius, peaceful and perfectly set up. And yet it feels like a lot of fun and living goes on there! The kitchen! Love it! I can only imagine how good the food must taste in that gorgeous room. One more thing or three...the light fixture and sconces are articles of great beauty and the bathroom is absolutely perfect - it would be a sacrilege to spit toothpaste in that sink. Peace and long life in your beautiful home.
Love
I am so jealous of this home! The dining nook is absolutely gorgeous... what a stage for your dining table and chairs. All your pieces work brilliantly... even the kitchen tiles work. How red and black tiles can work the way those work is beyond my imagination. I love it!
Sad he's not single. Otherwise I would have proposed.
My comment was very tongue in cheek. Some people have no sense of humour. I am sure Samer would not take offense, as he looks funky.
One of my favorite apartments i've had the pleasure to shoot. Thanks Marcia and Samer.
This is the dream goal when apartment searching. I need to see the rest of this building... Does anyone know if there is a blog like AT devoted to architecture?
makes me happy
Yummy! Thanks for sharing!
The thing that I love about this place (besides everything) is that it is original. I mean, the appliances are mis-matched for goodneess sakes! Who does that? Yet, the kitchen is perfect in every way. And that nook? Who puts a couch in a breakfast nook? Yet it's fabulous. Well... you get my point. Like!
it doesn't say is it rented or owned?
I want that branch in #14! Please tell me where to find it...
Your home is exquisite!
Beautiful!
BEYOND inspiring!
Serious window/light envy. I would hate to leave this place every morning. The kitchen color combination is to much of a stark contrast for my taste. Perhaps gray on the walls and ceiling to calm down the red and black tiles. The tiles almost look alive.
I love all the plants :-)
what is the pencil-cactus looking one that is sitting on the small tripod stool/table?
i die!
Completely get how you fell in love with the windows and had to have this dappled light aerie.
WOW! First off...a great space! The windows!
I lOVE the chair in your livingroom! Where did you get it?????
Also-great area rug. Bedroom is nice as well. Have to be honest...not a fan of the kitchen. The red and black- not a fan. ;-(
However, the rest is fab!
Dead on stunning. Some people just have it.
