Small spaces are often tricky, and given how much gear goes into the kitchen, it's undoubtedly one of the most difficult areas to keep compact, functional, and stylish. Here's some inspiration to help you infuse your tiny kitchen with character and convenience.
Obviously the aesthetic possibilities of the kitchen can range just as widely as that of other rooms. Some prefer minimalism and open storage, while others opt for vibrant colors, taking the opportunity to make a bold statement in a small space. But what all small kitchen designs require is consideration, creativity, and careful editing. Many of the spaces above rely on verticality to extend their utility. Magnetic knife strips, storage rails, overhead pot racks, hooks, and high shelving help keep counter space clear, making the spaces more functional and more open. Dry goods and other necessities become points of visual interest when they are uniformly displayed in glass canisters or jars. Occasional appliances are artfully hidden until their use is required.
There's so much creativity at work in the Apartment Therapy community that it felt only right to give some attention to some of the small kitchens submitted by our readers for 2011's Small Cool Contest. If you want to check out the full submissions, here they are:

Will there still be a Small Cool Kitchens contest this year?
I like color so I favor the ones with more than white. Not sure if I could live with it long term, but love the red and white tiled wall. Also the 2 turquoise colored cabinet doors.
They are all lovely. There are lots of great, stylish ideas. But none are what I'd call small.
I think any kitchen that can house a table for six should be struck from the "small" list HAHA.
I liked the ones with pops of colour and open shelving. in a small space I don't think i want to see too much door that close together...
I enjoy the creative kitchen seating that I think poses the biggest challenge in a small kitchen.

The kitchen is the functional part where you can cook, cut, and prepare...fitting a table that can seat 6 hardly means you have a large kitchen.
Yeah, our kitchen is 81sf with a total of 8 linear feet of counter space. but we knocked down a wall so it's open to the dining area. It looks huge and the table can actually seat 8 (although it's tough to get in the front door if there are 8), but it's still an 81sf kitchen.
These are great, very inspirational.
Small?? Come on. A table for six? My kitchen has two stools on the kitchen counter. We don't have room for a table! That's small.
