Time To Make This San Francisco Clock Tower Home (If You have $6.25 Million)

This new San Francisco listing is billed as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live and work within San Francisco’s most iconic, historic property,” I know what you’re thinking and no, it’s not that iconic, historic landmark—but this one is pretty fantastic.

This one is a historic clock tower penthouse—and it is absolutely amazing. Frankly, given its $6.25 million price tag, it ought to be. The home is equipped with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a clock room where the four faces of the massive clock (each eight feet in diameter) reside.

The 3,000 square foot penthouse rises 183 feet above Rincon Hill, in the building once occupied by the Max Schmidt Lithograph Company. The company made its name around the turn of the 20th century, when it supplied San Francisco’s early canning industry with most of its labels—lithographed labels which helped popularize California far beyond the Pacific coast. In a 1921 article from Canning Age entitled “A Pacific Coast Label Company’s Growth” the Max Schmidt Lithograph Company building is declared unlike any other. In fact, the article notes that on the roof was a “garden, handball, basketball and volleyball courts, and other athletic facilities.” Good to know that not much has changed in Silicon Valley.

The building dates to 1907 with the clocktower added by Max Schmidt in 1921. The penthouse’s brick walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed beams, and a 1,200-square-foot wrap around deck with views of San Francisco Bay are breathtaking. Let’s face it, they make you wish you owned enough Apple stock to cash out and buy this unicorn of a property.

And while Big Ben it’s not, this historic clock tower can be seen from virtually across the city of San Francisco. At night, the clocks are illuminated creating a spectacular sight. I’m thinking “Big Max” has a pretty nice ring to it.
