What are the biggest furniture stores you can think of off the top of your head? IKEA, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel? Those were the ones that immediately came to my mind, so I was really surprised when I opened Furniture Today's 2011 Retail Planning Guide and found a list that included some humongous stores I'd never heard of.
Nebraska Furniture Mart? Badcock Home Furniture? Having lived in big northern cities for my whole life, these places have stayed outside my radar until now.
Another interesting thing this list proves is that while modern style might reign on Apartment Therapy, traditionalism is still the choice of most Americans. What's more, layaway plans and whole-room sets — as cheesy as they seem — must really work. Stores like Ashley, La-Z-Boy, Rooms to Go, and Bob's Discount Furniture dominated the top 25, listed and linked here:
- Ashley Furniture Home Stores (National) — HQ in Arcadia, Wisconsin
- IKEA (National) — HQ in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania

This is sort of a side note, but Nebraska Furniture Mart's website is terrible.
Hee hee: "Furniture Today."
I'll agree with the Nebraska furniture website it is horrible. You just have to go there. Really surprised its on the list but I guess its owned by another company. But I guess without something like an IKEA anywhere near where I live I guess its easy to see why it dominates
I love Bob's. At their HQ store they have an area called The Pit that sells discounted furniture. Some with nicks. Others that didn't sell in their other stores.
But what about... Montgomery Flea Market??
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1107024/flea_market_montgomery_long_version/
Reportedly, it's just like a mini mall.
Bob's Stores ***cringe***
It makes Jordan's furniture look good, which is a step above ashley
I... actually have stuff from Ashley's. No bedroom set or anything, but an 8-drawer dresser, my couch, and my dining room table. The only thing I wouldn't buy again is my dining room table, just because I have been damaging it non-stop in one way or another since I bought it. But my dresser is enormous, so heavy, has deep drawers, and the drawers slide in and out perfectly after several years. My couch is so cute and comfortable - I get nothing but compliments on it. And my bed (box springs and mattress, no headboard or footboard) is sooooo comfy! I would never ever buy a set for a room, but their individual pieces are well-made and sturdy, and reasonably priced.
Nebraska Furn. Mart aka Berkshire Hathaway Furniture Holdings aka Warren Buffet aka second richest person in the U.S.....Makes a bit of sense, yes? Remember to sometimes crawl out from under the hipster rock we all enjoy living under.
Just remember, some of us are *forced* to buy at places like Nebraska Furniture Mart and Ashley, cause there's no IKEA in a 12-state radius. I'm honestly surprised Target didn't make the cut, since that's where most of the IKEA-like furniture buying around here happens.
And I'm reading this sitting on a couch purchased from Ashley's. It's one of the few furniture purchases my husband and I have made, and it is actually more modern than you would expect. When we were couch shopping, I had a list of things I wanted from a couch and the number one criteria I had was no rolled arms! I read AT for ideas on things I like, but I also live firmly in a practical world with a budget and several hours from the closest IKEA.
My daughter's first furniture purchase was an Ashley sofa, and you can sleep on this thing, it's so comfy.
I'm surprised that Wal-Mart and Target etc. aren't on there, at least not in the top 25.
But then that makes me wonder if they're only including furniture-only stores, and/or what they consider "furniture." If they're counting total volume at IKEA, then wouldn't they need to count purchases at Target of clocks, lawn chairs, Xmas lights, storage boxes, bedlinens, meatballs? Surely this would rate Target and Wal-Mart up in the top-25, no?
I've had horrible stuff come from Target.com as far as furniture is concerned. I have a busted dresser and crib after one move not even across town. I understand that its the maker of these items not Target itself. But I will never buy online furniture again. The reviews were positive and its not like I bought the cheapest thing available either.
Most of this country are working to middle class, who are not "urbane," or with lots of money to spend on furniture, nor do their tastes run toward contemporary decor. So, this doesn't surprise me at all.
Some of these stores have a selection of contemporary within --- Art Van in Michigan, for instance. Sort of like shopping at TJMaxx - you've got to wade through a lot of stuff to find a few pieces that suit you.
When you regularely browse homes for sale, it's no surprise that the average "American taste" is very traditional. Whole-room sets arranged in front of a huge tv seem to be the norm. Well, so be it. Everybody is entitled to their own taste.
#4 - Berkshire Hathaway stores are actually top notch, at least the ones I've had experiences with. Warren Buffett is a quirky genius and doesn't buy run-of-the-mill companies. They're not necessarily raging-popular among the hipster crowd, but they're dependable stores that have a leg (or two) up on Ashley-type quality. I can usually find some great things among the sea of suburban treasures.
When I first started searching online for furniture stores, in the hopes to retail their products, I noticed Ashley furniture. For such a small group of stores, they have a huge footprint on the web and they are growing exponentially. Modern contemporary furniture is more my interest. I find traditional styles a little boring and outdated.
Even if there are so many choices of furniture stores in US but the fact is that which one is offering better qualities with reasonable price list and better designs, its definitely a great list of stores I was just follow these list instead of searching online.

Do you have a top local furniture store list? Or does anyone know of a list out there that breaks down furniture stores by city and state? Obviously there's Yellow Pages and other business directories, but wasn't sure if it was blogged anywhere.
Mattress Kansas City
Try checking out this site http://www.BuyFurnitureYouLove.org, they have listings of hip furniture stores in many cities.
Thanks for sharing such a awesome list of top furniture stores. Last month I purchased Jofran Dining table from BEYOND Stores and got 5% discount and free shipping. You can find furniture collection from brands like Jofran, Modloft, Night & Day, Canterbury, Sitcom and many more with variety of styles and finishes.
I am surprised to see that Ashley is at the number one spot. It's not that they're not a good company, because they are, but I just assumed Ikea or Nebraska Furniture Mart would be ahead of them on the list.
As an aside, I'm wondering if there are local/regional lists that have already been created? I think national chains are great but I would love to see lists for companies that are near me. Like for Furniture stores in Overland Park KS.
Ashley is a popular national name brand and is sold by many. In the St. Louis, MO area, Weekends Only www.weekendsonly.com is pretty popular - and they sell Ashley. They have a similar format to Nebraska Furniture Mart and sell the same quality as IKEA.
Another furniture brand to consider is Simply Beautiful Furniture. They aren't widely known, but they do have a great selection.

I recently bought this italian bedroom furniture and lightning from Nella Vetrina ( www.nellavetrina.com ) which it was recommended by a member from my family. I mixed classic and modern design and I think it looks terrific. They're based in NY.
It's great to buy from big furniture companies like Rooms To Go, Haverty's, Ikea etc., but some times you can find treasures in smaller stores, especially when you are looking for unique items like designer furniture. I found an unbelievable lamp at a place called http://www.furnishings-decor.com so one should definitely consider this.
Visit MartRing.com where everyday is a Blackfriday. Clearnance deals from top retailers. MartRing.com is
the place to find deal posted which are refreshed every hour.
I have to admit that there are many beautiful stores out there, but one of the best I have ever seen is this modern furniture store in Miami called Modernissimo. Their website is http://www.modernissimo-furniture.com check them out.
I'm surprised Schneiderman's Furniture <http://www.schneidermans.com> didn't make the top 25 of this list seeing that many of the local competitors are on this list. They have great furniture and are way less expensive than Ashley. They probably just aren't big enough yet. I believe they only have a few showrooms in MN but they are big competition for other MN based furniture retailers. Thanks for sharing the list!
