The Ultimate (Probably Practically Free) Dress Up Box Checklist!

Ssh! We're putting together a dress up box for my kids this year for Christmas! To aid in my quest for putting together the best dress up box ever, I have made this handy "Ultimate Dress Up Box Checklist". How many of these do you have in yours? Or, even better, waiting to add to yours, currently lying around your house?

Used adult clothes:

  • short dresses (they will become full length on a child)
  • bridesmaid dresses (possibly cut short?)
  • nightgowns
  • business shirts
  • suit jackets
  • suit vests

Used adult accessories:

  • scarves
  • shawls
  • evening wear gloves
  • low heels
  • purses
  • wallets
  • handbags with short straps
  • sunglasses
  • glasses with the lenses popped out
  • ties
  • necklaces
  • clip-on earrings

Used big-kid clothing or accessories:

  • leotards
  • rain boots
  • cowboy boots

Around the house:

  • mirror
  • apron
  • hair brush or comb
  • rubber gloves
  • an old mobile phone
  • old keys on a key ring

The toy box:

  • play money
  • a doctor's kit
  • any previous years' halloween costumes that still fit
  • a magnifying glass
  • a toy microphone

Easy DIYs:

  • capes (go here for the no-sew and here for a few sew options)
  • crowns (go here for a sew version, or go the old-school cardboard option)
  • tails (go here)
  • animal masks (go here)
  • fairy wands (stick + star, or, for little ones: pipe cleaners bent into shape)
  • fairy wings (go here)

And of course, if you really wanted to spend a little money:

  • no dress up box is complete without at least one feather boa!
