I have the hardest time finding bar stools that are unique. I came across the Organic Modernism bar stool while shopping for a rocking chair and was inspired to find similarly cool bar stools that would set the kitchen apart from an average kitchen.
Some of the bar stools I chose for the roundup are valued more for their modern aesthetic rather than comfort. Personally, I love both upholstered bar stools (for their look and comfort), but could also fall in love with an aluminum stool.

we just renovated our kitchen and I am still deciding on bartsools. I am thinking of the jeff covey 6 stool or something upholstered. can't decide.

1 looks like an ugly 80s leftover to me. 3 &4 are stunning and the red one is fun.
A great modernist design that combines looks and comfort is the Calligaris Hi Stool. You can find it at yliving and other places. We have the counter height stools, got them on sale, and are completely and totally in love with them - clean, spare design that goes with our eclectic style.
I was surprised (and happy!) to see the Organic Modernism furniture line at HD Buttercup this week (though not branded as such, for some reason). Gorgeous. I've also seen fantastic vintage midcentury options on Craiglist lately, especially if you can do some simply reupholstery.
Just because something is cheap doesn't mean its good. You will save more money in the long term if you buy more high end furniture.. Ikea is a mess in so many ways.. Have some self respect for design.

#4 is great! It's unique and functional. I like a stool with a backrest.
