Cubicles get a bad rap, and admittedly they can sometimes live up to their reputation for being grey and khaki carpeted cells. But working from a cubicle doesn't mean you have to give up your sense of style and personal expression. We share five easy tips below for bringing some life, color and personality to your cubicle workspace.
Spruce Up Your Chair
Whether you bring it from home, decorate it with a pillow or drape a jacket over the back, a chair is an easy way to bring a pop of color to the uniformity of a cubicle setting. If you're handy with a needle and thread, consider making a basic slipcover for the top part of the chair.
Bring In a Splash of Color
Using decorative paper or a piece of cloth is an easy, inexpensive way to cover a portion of a cubicle wall. If you secure the material to a piece of foam board, it also gives you an additional surface to stick pins into, and it's easily moveable, or changeable.
Display a Small Collection
Along with those family photos, keeping a small collection on your desk is a good way to express personality and inject some fun into your surroundings. If you don't want to have toys hanging around, consider keeping a small display of books with attractive covers.
Hang Some Art
Placing art in a frame instantly elevates a cubicle's decor. Grab a set of three or five from a big store like Ikea or Target, and fill with photos or postcards on a similar theme. If you have a large blank wall, try out some removable vinyl decals, like those shown below.

Don't Forget the Plants
Plants are a great way to inject some life and greenery into your cubicle environment -- plus, they benefit your health! Pick a small plant that can thrive indoors, away from light or without much water, as your needs require.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Cool article!
This comes in handy, as I have to move cubes again tomorrow. Sigh. This time my cube is truly crappy - I've got 2 different colored work surfaces - one is pink!
Don't use "office accessories", the cheap plastic type from office max. Use nice mugs or vases to hold pens, ceramic trays for supplies and small dishes for small items.
You can use "office accessories" that meet the AWESOME test.
Those are hard to find and rare to come by. I have an asymmetric weighted pencil cup that has a rubberized finish that I adore. (Can't remember where I got it, maybe container store).
Muji, MOMA stores are a good place to look for things that are also awesome. I do like your dish idea, there was a 9x9 salt tasting tray from Crate and Barrel that would be perfect for clips and bands that I now wish I had at work.
WJ... I love Moma too, agreed.
I guess I meant the garden variety office supply store accessories. Althought I do frequent the max and the depot for industrial looking stuff like the folding accordian file storage. And basic banker boxes..
In my last cube I wrapped my push pin boards in fabric depicting a Paris street scene. Everybody was like "Ooh la la!"
I've been meaning to cover my cube walls with fabric... for 3 years now! The home projects always end up taking priority.
Look for ways to repurpose household items. One of my fave desk accessories is a colorful, ceramic, three tier condiment dish that I use for paperclips, binder clips and thumb tacks.
I recently made over my cubicle space and then have done it again. I still have to get part 2 up on the blog. www.serialcheapskate.blogspot.com but for now here's part one:
