Ideally, we'd like to redo the addition where this room is housed. It is totally inefficient — some parts are not even insulated! — and the layout is pretty awkward, but until we figure out a master plan it will have to do.
Since moving in, this room has served a variety of purposes, from master bedroom to craftroom/office/playroom/guestroom, but most of the time it starred as the disorganized junk room, housing everything from snowboards and power tools to baby dolls and bins of giveaway clothes. To make matters worse, although it's the biggest room in the house, it's an awkward shape — long and narrow 9½ feet wide by 19 feet long with closet and entry doors opening into the narrow space. In short, it was the depressing room that no one wanted to be in.
Not too long ago we received a very nice gift from my in-laws, a large flat screen, and we knew that we would have to clear out the room of doom in order to have a decent place to house it. Shortly after, we scored a couch off craigslist, and got to work clearing out the junk.
Since the rest of our house is not very big, we knew the room would have to serve as some sort of storage space in addition to being a relaxing place to hang out and watch movies. We cleared out all the giveaways, stowed the power tools elsewhere, and incorporated the bikes, skateboards, and music gear into the decor.
We used leftover white and navy blue paint to spruce up the walls, leftover chalkboard paint for the door, and I painted a wall mural with one of our family's favorite poems to the back wall (which still needs a little tweaking). I made the black and white pillows from Primative Stripe Linen from Calico Corners, which was leftover from another project and bought during one of their regular sales. One yard made two standard size (bed) pillows. The blue and white pillows are indoor/outdoor pillows, scored for $10 in the clearance rack of the Restoration Hardware outlet in Leesburg. Although I'd love to see the stained wall to wall carpet magically transformed into hardwoods, it has hardly crossed my mind since adding the block print rug.
The total cost for the room was $50. Well actually, $49.44!
Since completing it, the room has become the preferred spot for all of our family members:
Side note: In case anybody was wondering, the brick wall was painted over by the previous owners, much to my purist husband's annoyance. It was purple when we moved in. And the other walls and ceiling were blush pink— think Easter egg!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I love it. And in your photos, I read the carpet as a blond wood floor, so go you!
Looks really good; creativity over cash.
Anybody know where that floor lamp is from?
Wow! I would certainly love to hang out in there.
Just curious: what poem did you choose for the wall?
I love the telephone pole silhouettes. They're perfect on that brick wall.
The room came out beautifully! The color scheme is really nice, it creates such a chill mood. Kudos on being resourceful and creating such a great space!
A total win! I would have never though this room was completed for under $50!
thanks all!
Mister Mike - it's a leftover from our old house, and is at least 7 years old. I think it's originally from costco. I remember borrowing a card and going crazy :) The shade is from Target, and even it's a few years old, they may still have it.
emmabemma - thanks! the poem is "My Symphony" by William Channing. It's linked above. I first saw it in my in-laws house. They have a framed version that they received from my husband's great grandmother. It reminds me to be grateful and content with the little, imperfect things in everyday life...working on that!
Gorgeous! I'm so impressed. I've got several projects going and only $50/month set aside for home improvement. It's maddening, but also demands ultimate creativity, so I definitely appreciate your ingenuity!
Wow! This room could have been $450, easy. It looks AWESOME. Great job!
Thanks for the info LeahDC! I've been trying to find the right floor lamps for one of my bedrooms and i thought something like yours would look great. Guess I better keep looking!
This is one of my favorite room makeovers ever. It is really fun and funky.
i'm loving all the befores and afters; this one's fantastic
It looks amazing! I can see why you all like hanging out in there now. Sort of like one of those "found room" dreams I used to always have.
Adding to the chorus of "wow"! 'Found makeovers' are the funnest for me.
Awesome! I'm in aw of that rug!
Alahoop-yes, the found room dreams! I thought I was the only one!
this is total perfection, you should be SO proud. i just moved in with my boyfriend and we're starting from scratch furniture-wise (we also happen to be on a barely-there budget) so it's going to be a challenge to make our place everything we want it to be. congrats! :)
You really did a seriously fantastic job! So creative...I'd love to hang out there.
Wonderful space. My kind of colors. Can you tell us (me) about how you created the telephone pole wall? I intend on copying you. =)
AH! My "found room" dreams were always about finding a second kitchen in the house. WHAT DOES IT MEAN.
I haven't had the dreams since buying my house six years ago.
another great example of what paint can do. =)
I love this. The colours are great and I love the telegraph pole sillouettes, very cool :-) And my favourite part - the budget! Amazing job.
That's fantastic -- reading about (and seeing) a regular person doing over a room for free is so much more satisfying than seeing some gazillionaire hiring a company to spend a ton of money for a re-do. It looks great!!!
it looks great
Love the room, and the budget. Most of all, I love your dog! Is it a Ridgeback?
also love the telephone poles..: )....very fun and happy vibe in this room!
I love it.
Once again, Leah - you're an AT allstar! Of course I love the chalkboard door, mural, and poem - but painting the bottom half of the room in a dark shade and the upper half light is ingenious in this space.
kaegan - I will try to get a tutorial together for next week, so stay tuned!
dburnett - yes, she's a ridgeback, and she's lovely...and big!
Thank you for all the nice comments everyone!
Hurray, a budget makeover that really didn't cost much but doesn't look remotely cheap! I hate it when you see "budget" rooms that cost hundreds... I'm really curious about those little racks on the wall outside the room - are they bottle crates?
Leah, this place is fantastic. Congratulations on making the room just look great.
very cool!! fun to look at. the telephone poles in particular are genius!
The half navy wall is perfect to ground the light colors. Thanks, I can use for this a similar room. Also interesting to see how the couch color looks dingy with light blue but not with the navy. And the pillows take away the kind of of sad old look.....I am off to check out all your other posts.
I love this room (and the rest of your house)! Usually I'm a bit disappointed when I see a painted brick wall but oh my, you're telephone poles are amazing. I love that you painted them at an angle. Moreover, painting on a textured surface is difficult and you executed it so well.
I just finished a very similar project myself a week or so ago. I may regret posting this but enjoy: http://schrayarchportfolio.weebly.com/random-current-projects.html
