Although most of us have big plans for our bathrooms (someday!) sometimes big long expansive vanities with oversize mirrors can seem like a hindrance and leave you with less of a personal feeling. Want to see a neat trick to not only add storage but a bit of a custom built-in look as well?
Over at Home Talk, there's a great example of what a little trim can do for your bathroom. It's a simple way to get a customized look on the cheap.
This example uses a small bookcase in the middle with trim at the top and bottom to frame out the reflective areas and make them individual his and hers spaces. Do you like the look? Is it a trick you'd give a try? Let us know in the comments below!

I would absolutely do this if I had a large bathroom, it looks fantastic. Bet they spent next to nothing on it too!
It's nice but I confess I'm bothered that the sink/s are not centered under the mirror/s. To me it kind of undermines the custom look.
You cant really make this look 100% custom because there is only 1 sink. But it looks much better now than before. Good Job!
much better! good job!
I agree about the sink not being centered, but the concept is great.
Took me a few seconds to figure out it was a mirror make-over and nicely done I might add.
The sink doesn't bother me enough to not think this is a huge improvement on the cheap! Much improved placement of lights, too. The style of the addition seems to compliment the white wooden shutters, too. And you know, it's okay to like the color green or not, to like the room or not, but I think constructive comments that are kind are best.
What a huge improvement.
What a great idea to perk up a bland bathroom if you don't have the means to gut it. Well done!
Clever! And now there are also shelves!
nice. BUT... since when is a basin called a 'sink'? is this an Americanism? a sink is in the kitchen.
They are referred to as bathroom sinks in the US. I think of wash basins as a simple, portable bowl or dish for washing something as opposed to the built-in fixtures found in our bathrooms.
I like the revamp. Eventually I'd like to do the same in my bathroom.
I think it looks really nice. A big improvement over the giant one-piece mirror. We have a mirror like that, but I'm not sure this would work in our bathroom. It does give me some ideas, though.
This is awesome - Also, an EXCELLENT job on before and after photos!
Nice Idea!
The sink alignment kind of bothers me, but the improvements with the lights and mirror are so strong they override that problem. Very impressive!
I was so excited to see the post. The first pic is very similar to my own. Please, more ideas!!
Excellent makeover!
I've been trying a similar strategy with a vintage medicine cabinet sitting on the countertop to provide a visual break to the behemoth mirror we have. I love the framing & matching center shelving. We also have the dreaded bathroom light bar over said mirror -and all of this in 3 bathrooms in our house! Yuck. I am totally stealing this idea.
@bottlebrushy, last year kate of the centsational girl blog used some kind of prefab frame to dress up a giant mirror like this. It looked fantastic and was easy to install. Check out her bathroom makeover at centsational girl.
The place looks so much more organized than before! The trim really gives a good structure!
You can order easy to install custom frames from MirrorMate. They have several styles to choose from and have some before and after pictures on their website for inspiration. I ordered one a few years ago for a bathroom. It only took a few minutes to install and looks custom.

so great to see a subtle but amazing change.
Nicely executed, however I would either pop for a new sink and add some plumbing, replace the counter...or shift the cubby to the side/corner and center the sink. The left mirror looks purposeless.
Yeah that mirror was great—someone else on that site did the same thing with their mirror. Tons of cools stuff on Hometalk...they are a real gem.

@PIPSTAR, to get technical, I believe that the bowl part of ANY sink is the basin. But basin is a pretty general term for any shallow container that collects water. A basin can also mean a free-standing basin (basically just a bowl) with an ewer for water, or it can even refer to the plastic bins that hospitals have for patients to throw up in :-P.
So to me, all sinks have a basin, but calling it a sink refers to the whole structure: faucet + basin = sink
Disclosure: my bathroom looks a lot like the before.
That said, I think this is a bit of good money after bad... I'd want to replace the counter top and the mirror. Heck, I DO want to replace the counter and mirror--in my own room.
This will perfect for my bathroom, especially because becasue I have a boy and girl who will be sharing the batheroom. Now, I can a his and her side for my children who are 9 yrs apart. Please, continue to share with us I appreciate you. Thank you
I love this! We've been looking at an affordable way to update the huge builder's style mirror in our master and i think this is perfect. Even though this bath has only one sink, the other side could be used for so many things. If I didn't have to share, I could see a vanity area or a place to keep all of my hair stuff and tools. :)
