As part of my ongoing quest to add some color to my grey living room, I picked up one of these inexpensive tv tray tables at Target and decided to give it the before and after treatment. Yes, there is spray paint involved. And lamp finials. And rope. Intrigued? Click on through to see my nautically-inspired end result.

The goal was to transform this $9 table from 'college girl watching sitcom reruns and eating popcorn' to something a little more yacht chic. After spray painting the whole thing indigo, I drilled holes in the corners to attach the chunky lamp finials ($2.50 a piece from Lowe's). Then I wrapped cotton rope through the finials and around the legs.
The height is great, the price was right, and the pop of blue definitely brightens the room.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Interesting concept!
I like the idea and see many possible varieties -- instead of rope use long cabinet pulls to create a barrier. Do a two-tone treatment on the legs, maybe with a gold on the bottom third. Endless options.
Creative
Hilarious!
And I mean that in a good way!
I live near the water..so it's a great idea..must have..Thank you!!
love this idea!! I may have to steal and tweak this :)
It is cute, but the rope on the legs looks like legwarmers! :)
The legwarmers are my favorite part!
Seriously, i didn't expect much when I open this thread but WOW...I love it!! Really good job and so freakin creative!
I was skeptical... but you won me over.
The legwarmers are adorable. And your spray paint job looks good... even in the closeup. Well done.
That is awesome! What a great way to make a cheapish object look more pricey and way more creative. Might have to try it myself but with a different theme. Great job!
This is too cool! Agreed: they do look like leg warmers. But, I like it anyway. I also love the 80's.
Pretty sweet. Looks like it would go well with a "contemporary nautical" theme -or "yacht chic" ;). Great DIY.
So cute!
Love it!
I love it!
I suppose that the "leg warmers" prevent the table from returning to it's flattened position. And there must be a giant knot in the rope on the top of the table; perhaps it's concealed by the framed photo.
I have an aversion to TV trays. They're always slightly too high to comfortably eat and they always seem to be incredibly unstable.
Don't like it!
Pleasantly surprised.
"Maniac, Maniac on the floor and she dances like she's never dances before".
From the movie "Flashdance" in the 80's..Legwarmers...oh my attempt at humor! :oD
Great idea!
I would probably choose one of the embellishment but not both.
But that's just me:)
Charming! And ditto on the paint job---it looks fantastic and so evenly sprayed.
Cute! I think I'd try to find a way, maybe a big nautical knot, to stabilize the legs to keep them from folding, but that's just me...
This is seriously cute. What a great idea! I definitely wasn't expecting anything so elaborate when I clicked the link. I think these would be perfect for a cottage.
how clever! it looks great! I also wasn't expecting this!
Gah! looks cheap and tacky.
no thank you
Fantastic for a nautical theme! I think you room needs more seashells, ships, and sealife.
The execution is excellent - it would look silly without the "legwarmers" - but I find the concept a bit twee. It'd be fun for a child's room, but for an adult's living room it's too theme-y.
That said, it was cheap, and the original table is virtually disposable, so it doesn't harm anyone if you have a bit of fun with it.
Looks fresh and sporty (and what luck in spotting those finials).
@Yo-yo: I think that, instead of knotting it, it looks like she actually spliced the rope together on top, in which case more power to her.
I think this is really creative! It's not my taste but good for you for saving one of these trays from the landfill.
Very cute!
Was expecting bright yellow spray paint and decoupage. Pleasant surprise! Ditto on loving the legwarmers!
she didnt save it from the landfill, she bought it at target. and those trays have little things on the underside of the top that the top of the legs snap into, so it won't flatten.
I laughed out loud when I saw this. It's so fun! And I never would have thought to do it.
Sure someone's going to think it's tacky, but it's YOUR house... and they're not having as much fun as you are.
This is great.
I REALLY LOVE THIS !!!! Making my livingroom nautical with mostly beige and walnut but this pop of blue will be REALLY GREAT ! Gonna make these for sure !!!
Nope. Not a fan at all of the rope around the legs. This just seems like an awkward nautical attempt.
Nice work.
I am now eyeballing the old tv trays that my partner no longer uses since we have a kitchen table. ( his converted garage studio did not have a good space for one)
I happen to have some 30-odd year old metal folding chairs that are begging for paint.
I see an enjoyable afternoon flinging color in my near future!
( see, folks, did I mention a thing I didn't like about her theme? Nope. I took the concept and ran with it. Post positively!)
how creative to take something cheap and turn it into something chic.
That's great! They also make fitted and tailored tv stand covers that are gorgeous. It makes using them for formal events or to decorate formal spaces an option.
I guess if you're into nautical; good. If not; no thanks.
