When Mel first saw this pair of bamboo shelving units in her Habitat for Humanity store, she passed them by without purchasing. She then spent the rest of the night worrying that someone else would have snapped them up; thankfully they were still at the store when she returned the following day. With their glass shelves and ornate lines, Mel just knew these pieces were perfect for a makeover.

Mel painted her pair of bamboo shelves white, immediately transforming them from a blah relic from the past to a lovely addition to a modern day living room. For only $70 for the pair (plus the price of paint), Mel was able to create a wonderful display in her home at a bargain price. The gorgeous lines of these shelves really stand out in the glossy white, and the end result would look right at home in any design magazine photo shoot.

Good find!
Let me say that I did like the before but seeing them displayed in her home really makes the difference. Very nice job.
Love them!
Agree completely w/Lyonstill, having the in-home photos is a huge help!
Well done!!!
I love the transformation! What kind of paint did she use?
Would be more fun in a bamboo or even a lime green. Now that they're primed of course, you're halfway there.
These are an extraordinary shape, lovely details. Great find!
Cute! Great job!!
Beautiful! Great job!
Love them, but I admit, I thought about lime green (or chartreuse) as well...
SOOO much better now than dark...
I am always sad to see the kind of commentary that puts down things that are not to the featured homeowner's taste - i.e. " a blah relic from the past," are the words used to describe the before phase of this item. I actually prefer the before, (which, however, is not the point of this post) and not something I think needs saying every time something strikes me that way.
Decorating, and taste in general, are so individualistic - why not say something like "too dark and old-looking for her," without dissing the taste of everyone who does not hold the same opinion. It may not have been the author's intention to do that, but, to me, that is the message carried by such descriptions.
They look great..fun and fresh...you've 'styled' ;) them so nicely too!! ..And I'm sure you wouldn't of spent 70 dollars on PRIMER as mentioned above as a suggestion to repaint them chartreuse ...etc..now 'that they're primed' eeeee/! I love chartreuse, but feel that would def give them a 70's vibe.so no...
ohh they look great!! My aunt had a pair of bamboo shelves very similar to these, along with the now iconic peacock chairs.
Im not a paint it white hater by any means because I think as wonderfully proven in this case...its always a good bet. They would look great though in a candy color (like lime or blue...although very Adler I guess)
There is nothing as classic, or timeless, as white. These are perfect in color on style as the accessories can change with season, style, locale without worrying that they will "clash" with the furniture! The paint application is flawless. Mel, you're home must be beautiful!
I do believe it is a matter of styling. I think that if they had a vibrant color on the wall behind the shelves that they would have looked just as modern. If ther rest of the furnature was that same brown... then they'd probably would have looked dated. There are so many options for these shelves that I'm sure many would pass by for looking old and fussy. This is one view.
I love the idea someone had to have them be a bright color themselves! Although I don't think this would feel right within the space the author was intending them for. Not everyone wants to live amongst highy saturated color.
This is good example of how some times the simplest change can be the most striking.
I like the original bamboo and the painted equally well, though the bare bamboo may be too scratched up. I think you did a great job making these fit your aesthetic. They look pretty with the wall color.
Brilliant! They look fabulous in your room.
@keeks
The $70 were spent on the shelves themselves, not the primer... or the paint, even.
gorgeous! i love bamboo and how clean they look in the white. great job!
great job and you know how to style a shelf so that helps them look even better.
Wow! Great eye! I would have passed right by those in their original condition.
@LEPIDOPTERY It was the heat...and from me, someone annoyed when people don't read the post correctly..;0
Really great transformation!!!
Beautiful makeover and I'm tad jealous of your lovely score!
I am so jealous! I am always scouring Craig's List for something like this and have yet to find. They look awesome!! & GREAT find! :-)
