One of the projects on my New Year's list involves finally organizing my messy closet. I figured others might be in the same boat, so I pulled together this list of 10 good organizational systems, from aspirational to budget-conscious. Add your recommendations in the comments below!
HIGH-END SYSTEMS ($$$)
- Molteni & C: You can expect beautiful craftsmanship, high prices, and drool-worthy custom spaces from this Italian company.
- Poliform: This is another Italian closet company that makes covetable, expensive custom systems.
- LAGO: Not sure why, but Italians seem to have the market cornered on great closet design. This is a young company, based in Milan, with a strong European presence but no US distribution yet. Their closets are a series of slick modular panels that hide everything along a wall of storage.
MID-RANGE SYSTEMS ($$)
- California Closets: They offer free in-home consultations, and closets are custom-made for your space. More expensive than an off-the-shelf system, but less than a high-end designer closet.
- Elfa at the Container Store: This mid-range Swedish system is flexible, easy to customize, and sturdy. It's a consistent favorite on Apartment Therapy for its affordability and off-the-shelf accessibility.
- Easy Closets: A semi-custom reach-in closet starts around $300 here, significantly less than California Closets.
- Astech Closet System: They only work in Manhattan and New Jersey, but they're well-known for quality customer service at an affordable price.
BUDGET SYSTEMS ($)
- ClosetMaid: These no-frills systems, which are available for under $300 at HomeDepot and Lowes, are sturdy and affordable.
- Rubbermaid: These wire-frame shelves aren't the prettiest options on the market, but they do the trick and start under $200.
- IKEA PAX: A reader favorite, the PAX system comes in several finishes and, unlike many other IKEA products, it comes with a 10-year limited warranty.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I just installed the IKEA PAX yesterday for my husband and myself. It really looks great and everything has it's place. I cannot comment on how well it holds up since I just got it, but it definitely makes picking out clothes a lot more fun.
Um it's 2011 I'd really like some new posts. Not just rehashed posts from last year.
I really like the ikea stolmen system, though it may not quite qualify as a closet system. Something about the combo of semi-industrial piping and slick floating boxes does it for me... and the mirror.
I'd love to see an actual closet... The pics in the post are indeed great... If you only have 5-7 pieces of various clothing. Honestly, anyone's closet will look great with just 6 pairs of pants on hangers ;)
Great closet. Has place to keep each and everything a person can have.
TKPKgirl - agreed!
If the writers really think they need to do more about closets, at least show us real ones - not staged.
Annoying comment spam. Ugh.
This was just in time. I, literally, have three closet organizer systems I purchased and have yet to install in my condo's closets. I will be doing so ASAP.
I would, however, have enjoyed seeing photos of real closets.
Just FYI for anyone considering Elfa, the Container Store is currently having their annual 30% off sale on Elfa systems.
Have fun!!
We got Elfa during their shelving sale and we could not be happier with it. We did one wall since it is pretty pricey, but set-up was as easy as they said it would be and it has helped us organize beautifully.
If you want to see real user pictures of Elfa, go to the Container Store's website and click on reviews. A handful of people post the before and after pictures of their closets.
I love Elfa. And I love that you can send them the measurements of your space, and they will design the closet around your specifications, revise it until it's just right, and then populate your shopping cart with everything you need. Except the handyman.
