Between all the pumpkin pie baking and tinsel hanging, gourd decorating and hot chocolate making, you’ll find that every once in a while you’ll need to leave the house somewhere in between. It might be hard to desert all those plaid blankets you’ll be curled under as the holiday season takes way, but alas, errands call and friends demand your time. For moments like those, don’t feel like you have to take off your sweatpants or swap your hoodies for dress-up clothes.

Summer is such a casual time. The sun is out, the shoes are off, and plans come together seemingly at the last minute. You can (and should) be ready to grab and go – anytime, anywhere – by packing a bag stocked with the essentials. And what “the essentials” are, of course, depends on what you like to do this time of year. So while we definitely think everyone should have a summer bag switch ready at the helm, your summer bag all depends on your personality.

Alana Hearn divides her time between New York City, where she works for a commercial production company and a creative agency, and Newport, Rhode Island, the beautiful beach town where she grew up. Whether she’s dressed in a simple summer caftan or a full-length evening gown, she always looks polished. After getting a peek at some of her favorite clothing and accessories while photographing her bright, fun-filled home, I thought we should ask her to share some thoughts on style.

It’s time to clear out our makeup bags and declutter our cosmetics drawers—as a summer challenge, I dare you to pare down your morning routine to ten products or less. For au natural beauties out there, this is easy, but for product junkies, it may be difficult to part with all the options. It’s strange for me to admit this out loud (or in writing), but I’m not big on summer. Sure, I love the carefree idea of the season, but having grown up in Florida where summer (read: blazing, unthinkable heat and humidity) is basically a constant, I think a part of me just kind of rebelled against it, particularly with my wardrobe. I was that girl in jeans and a long-sleeve shirt complete with cardigan in the middle of July, sweating miserably but refusing to throw on a sun dress.

Recently, I shared with readers what my ideal summer capsule looks like and now it’s time to go shopping (even if it’s just in your own closet)! To some, that may seem like a lot (or more than you even currently have), but tops and layering pieces are the key to creating a curated wardrobe that is extremely flexible.

I like to think of the dress as the chameleon of the closet.
